1. How people treat their parents is a better indicator of long
Rivkah   (08.24.07)
life according to the Bible. "Honor your mother and father that your days may be long on this earth". What does "honor" mean? It means to be kind to them and to assist them if they need assistance. The Bible also wishes "health" to people above all things, so following guidelines on healthy eating in the Bible would be helpful. It is likely that people who study the Bible are more apt to follow it, so it is not surprising the people who go to Temple live longer.
2. My zaydie, z"l, was 92
JPS ,   Efrat   (08.24.07)
And davened every day, which for decades included a shot of shnapps which had the unwitting side affect of cutting down on his bad cholesterol. What conclusion can we draw? Prayer should be reinforced, in moderation, of course, with some hooch.
3. one fact proves this could be true
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (08.24.07)
every minute one is in the synagogue is one less minute they are on israeli roads, which infinitely increases one's chances of living a longer life. sad, but true.
4. The Christians have the same study
Josh   (08.24.07)
Really people, Torah already tells you how to lengthen your days. Love G-d and do Torah. Amoung those who go to prayers, are some who do this. In fact a higher percentage. Because G-d is just, he realizes that some of the sins on the individual are because the religious leaders have lied. "You shall give G-d an original prayer." but even if you give him a repettitive prayer - you are hopefully thinking about Him. The one true G-d.
5. It just feels that way...
Liv Lunger ,   Sweden   (08.24.07)
Those long, long services...two hours in Shool feels like five hours anywhere else.
6. It's true and proven
Dave an Al Day ,   Israel   (08.24.07)
If you go to Synagogue every week for 90 years, you'll live to a good age. Statistics.
7. Yaron London's lies
tma   (08.24.07)
I quote: They have large families, have less money to spend on doctors and medicine and they are less health-conscious, both for themselves and their children. This is an outrageous lie. The religious are extremely health conscious. They very regularly visit clinics, and baby clinics, take great care of their children's physical needs, take supplements, etc.
8. So what they have boring life
josef cohen ,   herzliya   (08.24.07)
The true measure of life is the quality of that life not simply the length of time you spent taking up space. Maybe I will live a shorter life but I am happy to pass on my declining years in exchange for the opportunities to indulge my own passions....not least of all the mad burning passion of pre-marital.... with an equally enthusiastic partner, who is comfortable with her body and doesn't see it as a constant source of shame to be hidden from the world hidden under a wig and baggy clothes.
9. Now THATS boring, mate.
Yawning Matilda   (08.24.07)
Specially if you have the urge to share these awfully dull facts with a bunch of strangers. Get a real life, then you'll find there's no need for sad bragging.
10. is a loger life a reward?
(08.24.07)
it might be a blessing or a curse; it depends on the quality of that life. "God rewards those who serve their lord"; it seems that they serve their God in a wrong way.
11. this article is rubbish believe me
rashid ,   palistinian   (08.24.07)
my uncle aiyad was going to pray 5 times a day and he didnt live long because last week a zionist missile cut his life very short so you see sometimes praying dont help
12. Living a long life
Rachel ,   Israel   (08.24.07)
Not only native born Israelis attend shul regularly: Most of the immigrants from the US and England are religious. The majority of secular American Jews could care less about praying, Judaism or Israel, for that matter. By the way, what is their life expectancy?
13. 11 rashid - praying doesn't help terrorists
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (08.24.07)
since we all know that god doesn't listen to terrorists, you are correct when you say "so you see sometimes praying dont help". anyway, being a terrorist makes for a much shorter life, so don't confuse the two.
14. I find
Sagi ,   Israel   (08.24.07)
that eating plenty of vegetables and fresh fruit is much more nourishing both to body and soul. You may think I am being facetious, but nae, I am deadly serious.
15. 1 less day to have an accident
Al ,   Wilkes-Barre   (08.24.07)
Think of this. Secular Jews have every Saturday to (God forbid) die in a car accident, drown at the beach and choke on shrimp. The haredim don't have this problem. That should add to their long life.
16. oy, london it really hurts you, ha?
uli ,   jerusalem   (08.24.07)
london, i see you nearly every day and amuse myself of your blind secular leftists propaganda. now science (which is your god) says that we religious live longer and you are in doubt. now you have somehow to prove yourself that your secular life style has nothing to do with it. come on, give me a brakes.
17. i dont mean to be rude or ungrateful but-
yahn goodey   (08.24.07)
for myself i'd sooner join enoch in not having to live here any longer than necessary.i'm 60 there is no place i can remember in my life time of moves (12 at least)where we have had what you could call nice neighbours.please G-D put me to sleep and wake me up when this madness is over with.
18. Yaron's verbal twists don't change the facts
Chaim ,   Canada   (08.24.07)
The most important criteria for long life is genetics. We can't change that. However, the second one is peace of mind. That's why a shot of alcohol every day helps. Trust in G-d brings incredible peace of mind and this is the reason religious people live longer.
19. Agree wit #1 Honor parents \has a promise
marilyn   (08.25.07)
Its the first command with a promise " that you shall endure a long time on the earth.' Many of our parents married and put up with one another through thick and thin. But they stayed together. many men did not abandon their families but stayed and helped; giving stability to their families. these men are highly deserving of honor and respect. Yet other men today can casually 'bonk' the daughters of such men in front of their face and live in casual relationships with these mens daughters . This is disgraceful and is happening left right and center in western democracy's . So what a smack in the face to parents who have set such a fine example for their children to be dishonored so.
20. Nothing to do with synagogues per se - same results as all
Healthcare researche ,   Israel   (08.25.07)
medical research: 1. Togetherness is healthier than isolation, especially for men 2. Devotion - religious or otherwise - can compensate for health deficits
21. wrong
moshe ,   israel   (08.25.07)
'If it can be proved that going to synagogue is a recipe for long life, then many full-fledged heretics will reconsider their attitude to public prayer'. You are wrong. some peoples body are stronger than their mind. You could bring a ball of fire from heaven and they would stay the same. Such is the power of the 'evil inclination'. G-d delivered our enemies into our hand in the 6 day war-you didn't change. Everyday we are living by miracles-you still don't change. I believe you will repent and return to the Jewish religion-however it will come from yourself, not an event or research paper.
22. life span
kiki ,   jerusalem   (08.26.07)
civvilisation and health care ,education . heredaty and many factors affect the life . but sure any other factor do not go opposit with the religion or going to synagoge . you can take care of the health and going to synagoge ,you can educated and going to synagoge . i can have only three children and going to synagoge .. but lastly may my death is by ca of skin or bone or any thing which i have little to change its time even if i live in a synagoge .. i think religion is the food of soul more than the body it is the differance only
23. It's not going to synagogue per se -
Shalom   (08.26.07)
It's having religious belief, having a community where you meet people, and it's keeping the mind active.
24. #16 and #23 Well said and so true,
(08.26.07)
that it's 'killing ' him...
25. London doesn't understand logic, much less statistics
Ilan ,   Ariel   (08.26.07)
Yaron's starting premise: "God rewards those who serve their lord with a long life" is the conclusion of the study is simply hilarious as a non sequitor. He reminds me of the joke/story of the Soviet astronaut proclaiming "Yep, No G-d here" in his simple minded approach. So rather than reconsider his inability to understand simple things, he attacks statistics. Funny. Truthfully, I'm sure that our world is much more complex than all that. The good sometimes (even often) suffer while the evil thrive. Not a particularly new or revolutionary theory. All this shows is that London isn't comfortable with his personal decisions. I feel pity for someone who would only consider being religious if there "was something in it" for him. We are G-d's servants not the master.
26. #25 feels pity for religious 1 if like that only for reward
de sterix   (08.26.07)
if there is no reward for trying to obey G-D so that whether you are religious or wicked you still end up with death forever-then why bother-eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we die-but if the reward for trying to obey G-D in this life is a resurrection to immortality-i believe thats a good incentive to religiously obey G-D and try to endure abuse if necessary to obtain that reward.
27. I favor the chassidic approach...
Ilan ,   Ariel   (08.26.07)
It is to our advantage to become accustomed to godliness in this world in order to maximally benefit from closeness to G-d after we leave this world.... Anyway #26 seems echo the discussion in Pirkei Avot 1:3. We are not to serve in only in order to receive reward, but not to conclude from that there is no reward. Life is more complicated than that.
