1. Reminds Me Of Auschwitz.
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (08.22.07)
How did the police and government let this place get away with this outrageous activity until now?
2. So what's the damage?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.22.07)
3. # Brauner
Sagi ,   Israel   (08.22.07)
"Outrageous" is the fact that Haredim take the law into their own hands. I am also against this form of burial, but I am more against anarchy, because that is exactly what it is. I am also more for freedom, in this case freedom of choice, than I am for imposition. I sincerely hope that the perpetrators are caught and punished , arson is a serious crime. As for Meshi Zahav he should also be punished if he is guilty of aiding and abetting. The correct thing to do is to act and lobby for a parliamentary bill to outlaw this practice, the incorrect thing is to take the law into your own hands. It is time the Haredim decide to respect the law.
4. # 2 Kyle
Sagi ,   Israel   (08.22.07)
The damage dear Kyle, is to society, but I am not sure that you are capable of understanding this.
5. Thanks to the one who did it
YB   (08.23.07)
Israel is steeping lower and lower by the day. Shame on them.
6. Criminal acts by criminals.
Olej Gamur ,   Netanya, Israel   (08.23.07)
Arson is a crime. The ultra orthodox don't respect laws, democracy or freedom. In fact, all segments of Israeli society are filled with people who respect nothing but their personal agenda (usually money, power). This oleh has had it! Secular zionism is DEAD.
7. Leave it to Kyle and Brauner.....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (08.23.07)
to speak out in defense of arson in the name of God. The sentiment is as disgusting as the act of the person(s) who committed this crime.
8. What kind of society are we talking about?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.23.07)
How do you define "society" Sagi? You are the one who advocates forced secularism, in other words, you envision a fascist society.
9. Crematorium set on fire? best title ever.
(08.23.07)
seriously, it'll be like "fish drowned to death"
10. CHaredim
James ,   Raanana   (08.23.07)
Isn't it about time that us Jews say to the Haredim - no more !!
11. As a religious man in Israel...
(08.23.07)
I am glad that this is no longer standing. though it is of most importance to come down hard on these arsonists. Arson is against the law. Agreeing or disagreeing with this situation is of no relavence. What if next time you want to open a kosher butcher in Yaffo and the Arabs burn it down, or a news paper that may have some controversial messages in it is destroyed? freedoms are not a salad bar, you cannot pick and choose those of which you like and those in which you dont like.
12. No permit to build or burn
Steve ,   USA   (08.23.07)
B"H No permit from the health ministry seems like a reason that the place should be shut down. It is interesting that the vigilantees have to take action instead of the police enforcing the laws. I guess some laws in Israel are treated more as guidelines.
13. when the charedim will understand....
soLoka   (08.23.07)
that they are the one who makes all the secular run away from the religion !!! and Mr Zahav - What a great example !!! Idiots !!!!
14. it is horrifying to know people are cremated in israel.
debra ,   usa   (08.23.07)
who allowed to be built? shame on them.
15. Is there any proof of who did this?
Yosef ,   Jerusalem   (08.23.07)
reading this article and the talk backs it has already been decided that it was done by religious Jews ! this is nothing but a slanted article thats based on circumstantial evidence! there is no proof of anything done by a single person or group, it could have been Martians for all we know! now every time a non kosher restaurant or bar burns down in this country we can be sure to have Ynet provide us with the details of how the orthodox burnt it down!
16. To Sagi #3
Zanveleh Der Treger ,   Meah Shearim   (08.23.07)
Sadly, for Chareidim in Israel, the only way to achieve their rights is anarchy. Kikar HaShabbos was only closed on Shabbos because of anarchy. Just one example.
17. Leave it to Andy & Sagi....
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.23.07)
Don't you remember several weeks ago when a secular in the Justice Ministry beat up a religious MK, and YNet talkbackers wanted to pin a medal on him because the MK provoked it by saying "you guys are just like the Germans." Well why is it OK to beat up a living person and put him in the hospital for saying "you guys are just like the Germans" but not OK to damage a crematorium which burns bodies "just like the Germans." Cause it's frickin PROPERTY? PROPERTY is more important that somebody's FACE???? You guys are sliding down a slippery slope.
18. What if Holocaust survivors or their families did it?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.23.07)
Should they be sent to jail? Everybody is "assuming" that those mean old haredim did this, but the perps have not been arrested. If Holocaust survivors or their family members did this, how can anyone condemn them? At least they did not punch the crematorium owner in the face and put him in the hospital.
19. Crematoria in Israel
Menachem Petrushka ,   new york usa   (08.23.07)
In Israel, Charedim are guilty of committing cimes before any one knows who committed the crime. Reminds me of Europe where Jews were also guilty of committing crimes before any one knew who committed the crimes.
20. we should all move to sderot to determine
yahn goodey   (08.23.07)
what is or is not a criminal act.destroying what represents a nightmare to those that lost loved ones to the holocaust is a small "crime" in which no one died or was injured -compared to the rain of terror on sderot that olmert and barak permit by not allowing the idf to fully engage in bringing to an end.
21. U want crematoriums? U can find all over Germany, NOT ISRAEL
dbroc ,   CHicago   (08.23.07)
Don't say "oh, those Haredim" You don't have to be Haredi (I"m not) to feel disgusted by crematoriums operating in Israel. It is a symbol of everything that stands against Judaism. It is foreign to us, and against Jewish law. Yes, Jewish law. Don't follow it if you don't like to, go to Cyprus and burn, but not in Israel
22. Sagi, you must know the perptrator! You know he's haredi?
Jeremiah ,   Israel's Jewish Land   (08.23.07)
I don't think that's been determined. Sounds like you have a very bigoted disposition. I don't believe in breaking the law, like most people. The main and premier law broken here is the law that a Jewish body should not be destroyed by burning. This place was a hideous abscess in midst of the Jewish people and Israel. Also Sagi, I don't think the article was clear as to whether or knot it was even proven definitively that it was in fact arson. Sounds like the place might have been broken into but that doesn't mean the burglar set a fire. No where in the article was this determined to be fact. However, if some brave upright soul did burn it to the ground, if only one Jewish body was burned there, they would have been too slow in acting. It should have been destroyed sooner by someone or government body. If some group or individual was able to have done it sooner, God bless them. I hope the owner faces serious charges. I'm sure there are a lot of people, including a lot of seculars as well, who are glad it's gone. I bet you would find a vast majority of holocausts survivors who are also glade to see it put out of business by any means necessary.
23. Mr. Brauner's Right
Rav King ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.23.07)
It looks just like any camp crematorium in Poland. It scary. And for all those who criticize Charedim for taking the law into their own hands (sic), it's the Law of Hashem, and it's their OBLIGATION to do so. Plus, if we were to wait for the government to do something about it, they never would. Look at how the government respects Judaism (Kever Yosef, Har HaBait, Homo parade, etc.) To all the anti-religious folks, out there, with your mamash disgusting comments made about all forms of religious Jews, just remember one thing- - if it weren't for us, you wouldn't be here at all. Religious Jews are the reason we are all still here, despite intermarriage and assimilation. Without us, there is NOTHING - no state, no Jews, NOTHING. Remember that next time you decide to throw your asty, anti-semitic rage against us.
24. To Debra: Don't worry, only dead people are cremated.
Lenny ,   Israel   (08.23.07)
25. Let Israelis live and die as they please
Susan ,   Tel Aviv Israel   (08.23.07)
Israelis, most of whom are secular, should have the option of cremation like any other people. A free, modern Israeli who doesn't believe in the resurrection of the dead, and chooses cremation, has nothing to do with Nazis. Actually, cremation could be an environmentally sound option in a country with a limited amount of land. Personally I would not choose it but this is supposed to be a democracy. And by the way, assuming that this was a religiously motivated arson, that is exactly the kind of action that turns most Israelis I know against the ultra-Orthodox . We don't tell them how to live; they should let the rest of us lead our lives the way we choose.
26. # 22 Jeremiah
Sagi ,   Israel   (08.23.07)
Yes indeed, I have a very bigoted disposition, against anyone who breaks the law, secular, religious, orthodox or ultra orthodox. Especially I have a bigoted disposition against Haredim who constantly and consistantly flout the law by using violence and public disturbance to achieve their aims, especially when these aims are intended to impose draconian restrictions on the majority of the population. These folks must start to understand that they have no monopoly on Judaism. I for instance believe that my Judaism is correct but I would never dream of trying to impose it on anyone, let alone by violent means.
27. Jeremiah
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.23.07)
When was the law not allowing the burning of a death person voted at the Knesseth ? If this was not the case , there is NO such law that exists . You don't believe in breaking the law , but you bless the eventual perpetrators . Poor anti democratic people , only your religious rules are to be taken as Israel's laws you , and your alikes , want . The only thing you can obtain , is more hatred towards the religious by moderate GOOD Jews
28. Rav king [ ? ]
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.23.07)
Without the mostly seculars , if not anti religious , brave Jews who gave their life for the state of Israel , there would never been aq countryt that i can call MINE , NOT YOUR , who did , and do , nothing for her . It's not enough that we have to bear you , you also want to impose your middle age customs on us .
29. No. 25 Susan
NYC Girl   (08.23.07)
Excellent talkback. The issue is the freedom for Israelis to live -- and die -- as they choose. And while it might be understandable that there'd be a certain repugnance on a visceral level toward the idea of cremation, the fact that it goes against Jewish law is pretty much beside the point in a country where, as you rightly pointed out, the majority of people are secular.
30. Typical.
Talula ,   Israel   (08.23.07)
It's acts like this that spark more hate and fuel the fires that are already raging, fires that these bigots ignite, each and every time. People should be burried any damn way they want. How dare the Haredim sponge, lie, cheat and dictate. They won't get themselves in the good book by doing that. Can't stand them.
