1. Some other things to add
Danny   (08.27.07)
Israel developed a large portion of the techniques to deal with Soviet weaponry: 1) Such as SA-2 and SA-3 which the US was facing over Vietnam and later the SA-6 which it would face over Iraq. 2) Israel also developed techniques for dealing with anti-tank missiles and armour to protect American tanks 3) Israel handed over Soviet radar systems, Mig-21 (then the latest russian fighter jet) 4) Israel was also the first people on scene to help the US embassies bombed in Africa - they came without the US asking - and long before other "allies" of the US arrived 5) The US has spent hundreds and hundreds of billions defending Europe, the same EU that won't really help the US in Afghanistan and actively hindered them in Iraq and Bosnia. No one hears complaints about them. 6) Or the Saudis and Egyptians, who in return for billions of dollars of arms have paid the US back by flying planes into the WTC and the pentagon as well as making up the majority of foreign fighters in Iraq PS this book is already available in Arabic, I saw it in Damascus, right next to Protocols of Zion where it belongs. Shame on these "scholars"
2. AIPAC is chump change next to organized labor, trial lawyers

3. #1 Other things to add
Logic ,   Israel   (08.27.07)
-Walt and Co. neglect the fact that the Mideast is now in divided into two camps: The pro-West groups and the Iranian Axis. Harming Israel only plays into the hands of anti-American sentiment. -The Arrow missile defense shield is a joint project that will probably end up defending America's shores one day. -The annual $3B military aid to Israel, most of which is actually an indirect subsidy of the American defense industry, supports thousands of American households. (Israel must use 75% of the aid in America.) -Medical, Biotech, Greentech, and Hightech advances for the benefit of humanity. Most of these end products end up adding value on the American market.

Concerned Israeli   (08.27.07)
The Walt-Mearsheimer book is 100% anti-Semitic propaganda and should be outlawed, but the best we can do to fight it is to spread the truth as much as possible. Here's a link to the full version of Dore Gold's report on the Walt-Mearsheimer claim: http://www.jcpa.org/JCPA/Templates/ShowPage.asp?DRIT=2&DBID=1&LNGID=1&TMID=111&FID=376&PID=0&IID=1795&TTL=Understanding_the_U.S.-Israel_Alliance:_An_Israeli_Response_to_the_Walt-Mearsheimer_Claim
6. those grand secrets again
Rowan Berkeley ,   London, England   (08.27.07)
israel is of peerless value to the USA, but you're not allowed to tell us why. how very convincing.
7. Exposinf Israel
Walldizo ,   damas   (08.27.07)
If Israel is that important to the US,it explains why the US is so hated among nations.Sooner or later truth will surface and people will see the true ugly face of Apartheid Israel, the loyal ally of the US.
8. #6, pls go back to Ha'aretz
Danny   (08.27.07)
You find a much more welcome home there. Most of what Israel's aid to the US isn't secret. I have listed some of the obvious and well known military "secrets". Add also the text of the Khrushchev speech denouncing Stalin, which wrong-footed the communists in the 50's. Israel also acted as conduit to the Iranians during the Khomeni period - Khomeni whilst wanting "the Zionist regime to be erased from the page of history", wanted it to happen after they sold him the arms that would ensure Saddams Iraq wouldn't destroy his Islamic regime. Also from 1967 to 1980, Israel was virtually the only good news on the front against the USSR at a time when Marxist terror was shutting down airways and communism was resurgent. Finally, Israel was bulkwick against an increasing Sovietised Syria, Egypt and Iraq. Unless of course you think all that gulf oil in USSR hands would have had no impact on the US. For all this hardly any USD has to leave US soil as the vast majority has to be spent on US arms. As for Walt/Mearsheamer there exists the same question as for all anti-Israeli "cases" - if your evidence is so strong why do feel compelled to lie? Also maybe you'd like to point out the "benefits" that the US has garnered from it's billions in aid to Palestinians - currently the highest per capita recipients of foreign aid in the world - Egypt or Jordan? Maybe if we started flying planes into buildings or blowing up civilian commuters, Walt/Mearshiemer would "explaining" our "pain"....
9. Mr. Gold, have you forgot something
Shiloh ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.27.07)
Have you forgotten about Gog and Magog? Have you also been so blinded to the fact that Israel is being screwed behind the scenes with forcing the giving of land to a non-people? You are not aware who is leading the charge behind it? Or are you part of the propaganda machine?
10. You could make the opposite argument.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (08.27.07)
In many ways, US support has been a burden on Israel. The US greatly influences our policies & has frequently stopped us from taking appropriate action. Worse, they have pushed us into a disasterous "peace process" starting with our almost worthless peace with Egypt & continuing with the Oslo fiasco (which is still going on today). I'm not discounting American support - for better or worse, America is our only ally. But America also has it's own interests & on a far larger playing field than Israel. In the meantime, attempts to picture Israel as a "burden" on America are very similar to the attitudes of those who thought an accomodation could be made with Germany during the 1930's & continuing until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. It was the same mentality that sacrficed Czechoslovakia for "peace in our time" ...............
11. Israel and the US
mark ,   israel   (08.27.07)
We Israelis are careful not to insult the "intelligence?" of our interlocutors by spelling everything out for them, but if you can't work this one out for yourself take the query to your nearest nursery school teacher who will explain it to you in monosyllables which shouldn't overload your obviously limited cognitive circuitry
12. An efficient answer
Frank ,   Canada   (08.27.07)
This debate is biased because it is about is Israel a burden or a burden. The real debate is why the US are supporting Arabs while this support only provided them with terror attacks and anti-Americanism. Arabs are not only a burden for America, they are ennemies.
13. The root cause
Frank ,   Canada   (08.27.07)
Islam declared a war to the West so the real burden has been imposed by Arabs. Surrending may seem easy during a war but on the long run, it creates a far much heavier burden. The right attitude: no surrender, no concession and victory.
14. Israel's right to exist
Hilda ,   US   (08.27.07)
Israel keeps giving and giving to every country in need, whether it is Peru's earthquake, Greece's fires Ruanda's orphans, Darfur's refugees, America's vote in UN , technologies, medical break throughs and constantly she must justify her right to exist, a condition not afforded to any other country in the world.
15. What is being done on a practical level?
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (08.27.07)
What is being done to counter their arguments? Has this article been sent to these 'authors?' Have Congressmen and Representatives been contacted? Numbers 1 and 3, maybe you can make sure this info gets to the right people on Capitol Hill!
16. Let's not forget the *other* lobbyists
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (08.27.07)
* The powerful oil lobby - hardly mentioned by Walt and Merscheimer * The Saudi lobby, which includes a substantial number of former US diplomats to the kingdom * The army of "scholars" from leading universities who learned from the likes of Edward Said, and run Middle East centers sponsored by Gulf sheiks and oil interests * Organizations like CAIR, sympathetic to the Islamic struggle and funded by foreign interests * Far leftists who hate the US as much as they hate Israel Those who seek to disengage from, or weaken support for, Israel do so at their own peril. cf Dore Gold's recent "The Fight for Jerusalem". Highly recommended.
17. What Public Relations Officials? You?
Jeff ,   Cherry Hill, NJ USA   (08.27.07)
Where are they? Who are they? could not tell there were any. How about you, Dr. Gold, Natan Sharansky, Rabbi Lau, Caroline Glick, (gasp) Shimon Peres.
18. Sorry, They're Right, And I'm A Foaming At The Mouth Zionist
David ,   Marietta USA   (08.27.07)
Israel serves no "purpose" for the US. It cannot be used as a troop base. It existence upsets our oil rich "friends" It is a permanent drain on US foreign aid (not that 99% of that aid isn't recycled back in to the US economy...) Its exports to the US are limited, as are its imports. It has not spread the US concept of democracy (whatever that really is) to its neighbors in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon. And the constant warfare is an embarrasment to the US State Dept. eating up too much of its time, for decades on end. That being said, there is a moral purpose behind this state, which is one very rare characteristic in world history, and one never understood or appreciated by fanatical left wing "academics". The continued existence of The State of Israel might not be in the best interest of the US government. Its continued existence is very much in the best and finest interests of the US people. Unfortunately, there is a vast difference these days between the two.
19. It won't change people's minds
Kevin ,   USA   (08.27.07)
People who hate Israel already feel the way these two professors do. The report won't affect them. People who love Israel know it's racist bunk, and they won't be affected. Basically, this is just a liberal ploy to feel important without actually doing anything.
20. #7 The subliminal message
Raphael ,   Netanya   (08.27.07)
of Walt &Mearsheimer is the same as those who decided not to give shelter to the jews against the nazis, the decided not to bomb the gas chambers, as they were a burden considering their oil rich arab friends.
21. # 18
Eli ,   Brooklyn, NYC   (08.27.07)
"It cannot be used as a troop base" Never has an American soldier died for Israel, unlike Vietnam, Iraq, Korea, Mogadishu, that’s about 100k lives Why would you need a base here, Israel does Americas bidding for it, young Jewish kids are dying for your America "It is a permanent drain on US foreign aid" America gives just as much to Korea and most of it goes right back into the US economy "Its exports to the US are limited" http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1600302/posts Eat that up "It has not spread the US concept of democracy” like you guys did in Vietnam and Iraq, were not Christians, we don’t go around converting people, we lead by example “And the constant warfare is an embarrasment to the US State Dept. eating up too much of its time, for decades on end.” b/c prior to Israel’s existence the state dep had much more important things to do, like start other wars Conclusion; if your good to the Jews g-d will be good to you and America gets more from Jews that they can or ever will give back
22. #21 comment on #18
dan kaplan ,   usa   (08.28.07)
#21 - i think you missed the somewhat (?) subtle (?) irony and sarcasm in #18's comments in the first part of his talkback.
23. #16 Raymond, more on Arab lobby
GJW ,   US   (08.28.07)
It began in 1951 by King Saud. In 1973 oil co.'s pressure US to change Israel policy, OPEC oil embargo punishes US for Israel support. Oil jumps $2.60 per barrel to $12 (now $60 although it costs $1.50 to produce). 1977 - Jimmy Carter writes in his diary of pressure from Arab lobby during Sadat/Begin negotiations. 1983-2005 Prince Bandar Bin Sultan, Saudi ambassador to US is the single most influential foreigner. He influences Bush Sr. on Kuwait. Past several years: J. Carter Center receives millions$ from various Arab countries. B. Clinton receives millions$ from Dubai for pres. library, investments. Arab lobby joins orgs like ACLU against anti-terror laws. List of 48 pro Arab orgs and more info: http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/Read.aspx?GUID={F1BA8662-BB64-4358-BC6C-D862E27FB90E}
24. The Israel Lobby
DBC ,   Canada   (08.28.07)
Since the Israeli press seems to be giving the book ALOT of coverage, maybe the authors are right. Look at the reaction from Pro-Israeli groups. Attack the Book! Condemn the authors!. Not, ok, lets have a debate about the merits of the US - Israeli Relationship. The more condemnation this book gets from Pro-Israeli groups, the more people will want to read it.
25. 22 vs: 1...nuff siad

26. to 16 ....jerusalem is not for fight
kamla ,   jerusalem   (08.28.07)
jerusalem is for warshipping .. this is the fact that many leaders had forgeted . and failed in their war alongside the history .. jerusalem is not like any other city on the earth even macca is a worship city but only to moslemes but jerusalem is the one for all religions .. this is in our holy book .. as iam a believer / i think that it is the fact about jerusalem . it is not only a jewish city but a cristian one and a moslem one .. it is the fact .. so no one must fight as it is one city for one religion only
27. Israel's use to the USA
Frank Adam ,   Prestwich, UK   (08.28.07)
Remember the blunt comment of Ernie Bevin British Foreign Secretary in 1945 - 50... "The Americans want the Jews in Palestine because they do not want them in New York." The Quota Acts especially the Johnson Act were aimed at keeping Jews out of the USA. Then there is the nice matter of alleging the Jewish Lobby influence to cover for the Saudi and other Arab big oil lobby like a homosexual's spouse acting "beard" for their mutual condition. Fairly ordinary British and French papers have picked up the American commentary that..." the Bush presidenci(es) are the Oil Lobby in office." Israel has provided the US with (Middle East) intelligence probably since before it got the Kruschev anti Stalin 20th Congress speech, got the MiG 21 Christian Iraqi pilot to defect with plane 1966, and handed over examples of Soviet artillery captured in 1967 besides the captured SAM radar station in 1970. Israel is no more a burden than Egypt or Saudi which have also collected an average $3 billion a year in aid for thirty years. Then there are the billions dished out to Germany, UK and France besides many others. Finally both Avi Shlaim and Walt and Mearsheimer accounts of Israel are in the most elementary literary or psychological deficiency the yellow press can spew . They only recount Israel without the dramatic counterpoise of explaining what the Arab parties were doing at the time. As such they would be thrown out of court by any jury for not taking intoaccount mitigating circumstances and motive. You can only serve a decent explanation of (an) event(s) with ALL the facts and cross eaxamination of ALL the parties.
28. reasons
isiaiah   (08.28.07)
The fact is that the usa and europe support israel within secure borders for moral reasons . Its to do with basic human decency of refusing to allow any people to suffer genocide . its blackmail to argue their will be world peace if the jews dissolve . Human conflict in india and pakistan in africa in srilanka in the balkans has zero to do with jews. What about bangaladesh and pakistan . True a jewish general was involved but the basic human capacity to hate kill and kill thrives .
29. #24, because they learnt their lesson
Danny   (08.28.07)
For years Israel didn't bother countering lies and now those lies are "facts" - a quick scan of commentary about 67 will show this nicely. So if Israel points out lies then the authors are right and if Israel doesn't point out lies then they must be right. Sounds like someone maybe already made their mind up....
30. Importance of Israel
Frances ,   T'dad, West Indies   (08.30.07)
The conclusions of the two scholars are biased and not at all helpful to fostering understanding of the importance of Israel to the world. You only have to read the Bible to know that Israel is to be protected and respected but there will always be those who because of their own agendas, promote hatred of the Jews. The friends of Israel must speak out against this bias.
