You are correct in saying that "almah" means "maiden (i.e. a young unmarried woman), and not literally "virgin". On the other hand, "almah" is derived from the root "alma", meaning "to hide, conceal"; therefore, those who translate it simply as "young woman" are probably also not doing the word justice. At any rate, to come with idea of virgin birth from the text in Isaiah is a giant extrapolation, to say the least.
