Your article about Norman Finkelstein is rather mild and conciliatory: For years he did whatever he could to de legitimize Israel, to portray Jews as power thirsty immoral bunch who use the Holocaust to achieve their devious goals which is not only control of the Palestinians but also US government. As such he encouraged anti Israel and anti Semitic activity. Criticism and free speech are important, but they should be associated with accuracy of facts, responsibility of massage, plan for correction of issue discussed, comparative assessment of the problem. i am a professor at the university of chicago and can attest that mr. finkelstein's tenure was not granted due to mediocrity and blatant propaganda use in his classrooms. i am not jewish, but of arabic descent and i can tell you that it was not because of antisemitism that he was sacked. his lectures and content left much to be desired where he used the classroom forum for his own idealism and propaganda and where lies and revisionist history were constantly introduced and discussed. mr. finkelstein was not a professor of high morality. he was a propagandist. propaganda has no place on our campuses. you either teach the tgruth or you are denied tenure. the quality of his content bears no truth to the reality on the ground.

Finkelstein claims that Israel labels critics of its policies anti-Semitic. On the contrary. It is Finkelstein that engages in propagandistic canards and smear campaigns against both Israel and American Jews, writing hateful offensive books like "The Holocaust Industry" that make even David Irving look like a fair historian. And then when Finkelstein is accused of using anti-Jewish canards, his main defense is, "Impossible. I myself am Jewish and a son of Holocaust survivors." Lame.

If I recall correctly, he'd already been fired from three institutions for lack of scholarship and for using his teaching chair to spread propaganda. finkelstein was not sacked because he excercised his freedom of speech. he was sacked, for the 4th time, from de paul and other universities, because his ethics, pedagogy and research potential is nil. he falsifies what he writes. he misquates intentionally, leaving part of quates out to make his point of an argument. he practices poor scholarship. he's not a scholar, but a propagandist using the academic forum and his superficial credentials to propagandise his ideas. this is not a professor that is interested in true scholarship, but in bashing and condemning without any deep research and scholarly ethics in any of his books. and this is why he was sacked! regarding freedom of speech. yes, we should uphold this freedom 100%. however, this freedom comes with honesty, responsibility and no chicanery and lies. when a professor on campus engages in radicalization of his students to his own version of history, when same professor that is supposed to present both views of any conflict, when same professor damages the reputation of true scholarship by revisionist historical "research" and pure historical falsifications and poor research. then yes, such a professor is not entitled to use freedom of speech, at least not in this manner. being a professor at the university of chicago, i am very well aquainted with mr. finkelstein. he wanted a post here, but we, as a faculty, turned him down. no historian worth his salt will ever take this person's research as scholarly and honest, to say the least, he's a sham. and no, i am neither jewish, nor christian. i am an arab lecturer who is very familiar with finkelstein's credentials. i believe the only place he can excercise his kind of freedom of speech is on street corners with the ignorants.

Unfortunately, the DePaul episode only exposed some of the chronic (at least since 1970's) problem in many academia of promoting/rejecting professors on criteria other than scholarship (cronyism, ethnicity, favouritism, ...); I know many of these being the son of a math professor (and hearing many times his "defence" of certain other Indian professors who had NOT gotten tenure despite of being there since 1966--I stopped it by once asking him if he had sat in these profs' classes to objectively evaluate them). For #17: by the twaddle you call "logic", BLATANT PLAGIARISM and "data-cooking" can also be considered free-speech! The fact that DePaul ignored an obvious red-flag proves only that its standards are on par with University of Calgary which promoted as Dean of Business Faculty, a man who qualified neither academically (he could not get tenured!) nor business-experience-wise!

Prof. Norman Finkelstein is an honorable man, though, not in every aspect a blindfolded Zionist follower.
