LADINO IS PURE XV CENTURY SPANISH, SO MUCH SO THAT KING JUAN CARLOS UNDERSTOOD IT WHEN SPOKEN TO HIM. JUST LEARN SOMETHING AND MAY BE ASK THOSE WHO SPOKE LADINO SINCE BIRTH, LIKE YORAM GAON WHOSE FATHER WAS A LADINO LINGUIST.

aggresive but misread; i quote " Ladino, is the collective term for the languages spoken by the Jews of Spain. After the expulsion in1492, the original Spanish of the time became infused with other languages" so, Jews from Spain spoke a catelan based spanish but the ladino story doesnt stop with the expulsion and became more and more afterwards as well... great; the king understood it. Why shouldnt he?

Carles, You are right, those who were born and brought up in Turkey, Salonika, North Africa etc speaking 'Djudio' or 'Espaniolit' or 'Haketia' ....., would not have called their language 'Ladino'. [Ladino is actually the term for Hebrew transliteration of the old Castilian Spanish]. However, imperfect as it is, the term 'Ladino' is becoming more familiar and common, particularly in Israel and the USA. In the band we prefer to use the collective term used by linguists - which (as Jo pointed out) is 'Judeo-Spanish'. [If we were based in Spain it would be 'Judeo-spanyol' :-)] There is a wikipedia article on Judeo-Spanish/Ladino which has quiet a few good references.
