33. UCU are in Jewish stereotype;
vicky ,   Ashkelon, Israel   (09.29.07)
On the one hand they say its not legal (and this from an organisation that has amongst is members future lawyers) ON the other hand, maybe we can find a loop hole??? Who are the ignoramouses kidding? It obvious the student union is not run by academics, but by Socialist worker bigotts!! (you only have to look at their demonstration placards to see that) OY VEY (Hag semach all, may the palms on your booths stay on in the wind.)
34. UCU "academics" ?!?
Alex ,   Israel   (09.29.07)
If these people are members of a teachers union for higher education, wouldn't you think anyone with an I.Q. at least equal to, or greater than, a turnip would have sought legal advice BEFORE launching such a blatant anti-Semitic crusade? This attempt to weasel out of their embarassing position just magnifies the ignorance and arrogance of the union's members. Now the UCU's become a laughingstock in the eyes of the international academic community. So sad . . . . :-)
35. THANK YOU USA! GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
RACHEL ,   ISRAEL   (09.29.07)
36. As far as we are concerned, Britain's UCU do not exists.

Robert Renders ,   Belgium   (09.29.07)
41. Oh how beneveolent of them. Such a caring UCU
vicky ,   Ashkelon Israel   (09.29.07)
Methinks such a union for academics is working under cover. The blue collar unions have much more intelligence, and that is saying something. Are the students sure that their comittee have degrees them selves, or are they 2p short of a brain cell too. They knew that what they were doing was illegal, and now they make a promise to find a loop hole. To all you intelligent students, start another Union the first rule being is a promise to be non-political. The 2nd non-racist including ALL races and creeds in the sub-paragraphs, because when they have finnished with us Jewish academics they will start on the Christians, Buddist, Hini etc.
42. Credit should be given where credit is due
Gideon Swort   (09.29.07)
This boycott motion was defeated by a little known organization called Engage: http://www.engageonline.org.uk Engage was set up specifically for the purpose of battling these so called Activists inside the union, first the AUT then the UCU. The main protagonists at Engage are Profs. Jon Pike and David Hirsh, along with a long list of dedicated academics, writers and journalist. Credit should be given where credit is due, and I'm surprised that Mr. Heifetz did not mention Engage, while grabbing the credit spotlight. Hagit Klaiman obviously didn't bother to research this article.
43. What on earth is this?
Suncountry ,   U.S.   (09.29.07)
What's this? Last paragraph in the article: "The International Advisory Board for Academic Freedom said that Israeli researchers wishing to publish articles in Britain were asked to remove the name of which ever Israeli academic institute they belonged to as a condition for publishing their articles." Is this a standing policy? Do Israelis comply with this? If yes, then a boycott is happening! Reject this! Don't send articles to their journals (from anywhere!) unless everyone is free to name their institution!
44. I BET THEIR LAWYER IS A JEW! :-)
Woody not Allen   (09.29.07)
just a joke. Chag Sameach!
45. Credit and Gideon Swort
Ehud ,   TA   (09.29.07)
I believe some credit should also go to Alan Dershowitz who threatened to "devestate Britich academic institutions economically " by litigation in case the boycott goes through.
46. Ehud (45) Re: Alan Deshowitz
Gideon Swort   (09.29.07)
Actually the first to threaten litigation against the AUT, which then became the UCU was the prominent British lawyer, Anthony Julius (of legal action taken against David Irving fame), then representing the University of Haifa against the AUT. Engage, of which Mr. Julius is one of the founding members, took-on the UCU from within the union, canvassing union members for support against the motion, as well as taking on the leaders of the proposed boycott head-on. It was Mr. Julius who threatened the UCU on behalf of one of the union members that their proposal for a boycott was racist and illegal. Mr. Julius and Mr. Dershowitz shared the same platform at Bar-Ilan University during the campaign for Academic Freedom. However, full credit for stamping out this proposed boycott as well as the previous AUT boycott does go to Engage.
47. teachers acting like students
zionist forever   (09.30.07)
University students traditionaly like to take up what they consider good an morral causes .. save the enviroment, anti globalistion, get out of Iraq. This is a cause that any good student would love to take up but this time its the teachers wanting to take it up instead. Let them have their boycots if it will make them feel better in themselves but it wont do anything to hurt Israel. If they think that this silly little boycot is going to make Israel change its policies then they need to go back to school and learn just how insiginifcant their little organistion is in the bigger picture.
48. they use underhand tactics
zionist forever   (09.30.07)
The students and teachers are also very clever with their tactics on when they vote to have boycots over `Israel. My brother who is at university there was a student vote on weather the university should boycot Israel ... the discusion and vote took place on a Friday night. I am sure that this was no conincidense .. discuss it when the jewish presence will be minimal.
49. Last news from the UK: better than nothing
Michael Kerjman ,   The Earth   (10.03.07)
As seen from Australia, calling off an illegal boycott just intensifies traditionally anti-Semitic attitudes towards Jews factually incapable get qualifications and being employed in many fields of so-called mainstream activities in the UK &Co: http://www.aph.gov.au/SENATE/COMMITTEE/eet_ctte/completed_inquiries/1999-02/public_uni/submissions/sub340.doc
