Obama ,   Washington DC   (10.18.07)
In Iran, you will be hanging up on a crane to dry
3. I don't understand .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (10.18.07)
What is the point of a 120 year sentence? So, if only one person is killed, he gets 20 years? Murder is a life sentence, period. In the case of terrorists, the penalty should be execution & quickly - say, a year after conviction. Some may say that the death penalty is no deterrent. They are probably right. But the death penalty in these cases is not to act as a deterrent - it is punishment, pure & simple. It is also justice.
4. Terrorist Abettor - bet he'll be out in no time in a swap
Rebecca ,   Modiin   (10.18.07)
No doubt "convited without blood on his hands".
5. Dont worry Ashraf-Olmert will swap you soon.
Alan ,   SA   (10.18.07)
6. execution would be better
Igor ,   Munich, Germany   (10.18.07)
In the US there is capital punishment, in Iran as well, so why playing games with murderers of this kind? his deed is clearly proven, so better hang him up or put him on the electric chair or whatever. Stop playing games! but heĀ“ll be released anyway as Rebecca had said.
7. #3 deterance
Logic ,   Israel   (10.18.07)
Israeli prison, with it's prisoner rights, meals, free university exams, and family visits is not enough of a deterrent, and the death penalty is not one either. I suggest something else: Israel and the West need to create some sort of international prison in Antarctica, where terrorists and abettors who survive will be sorry they survived. It will be very cold and lonely there with only the bare basics. They won't see their family again, just like their victims.

9. #3: Maybe This Will Help Explain . . .
emanon ,   USA   (10.18.07)
I am not familiar with the Israeli legal system, but I believe it is similar to the US legal system. The judge is making a statement with multiple life sentences. Each person killed has justice served for their death. I also noticed that he sentences are consecutive, not concurrent. In the US, it is not uncommon to find a person with a total of 60 - 70 years of sentencing when found guilty of multiple charges, say 6 charges, but the judge may set the sentences as concurrent, meaning they may only serve one 10 ten term, the length of only one offense. The other reason to set the sentences consecutive is to ensure a life term stands in the event one of the convictions is overturned. I doubt that will happen in this case. Having said all this, I fear that what one of the other posters suggested, Olmert's penchant for appeasing the terrorists through prisoner release, means this convicted murderer may still walk free.

Talula ,   Israel   (10.18.07)
Five consecutive sentences means his name will be on the next prisioner swap list. Bring back hanging!
12. #7 & #9 - I don't believe in "statements".
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (10.18.07)
I understand that the court was making a statement - that's not the purpose of a court. There should be a mandatory death sentence for terrorists & their accomplices. And there is no purpose served by finding novel punishments as Logic suggests. It will not be a deterrent to crazed suicide bombers who planned on blowing themselves up anyway. The death sentence in these cases is similar to "putting down" rabid animals - since they are infected with a incurable mental condition caused by their sick ideology. And of course, they must be punished for their actions nonetheless - Actually, I would even extend the death penalty for attempted terrorism - the intent is sufficient cause for a death penalty. And, there is the added benefit that there will be no temptation to use them as bargaining chips or in politically motivated prisoner release deals. The justice system must be protected from our irresponsible politicians - I just wish we could find a way to protect US from our intellectually challenged politicians.
13. Two comments
Rami ,   Nazareth, Israel   (10.18.07)
1- He is a terrorist, let him rot in Jail 2- Jewish settlers/terrorists who attack and kill innocent pal civilians should also stand trial and be sentenced for their terrorist acts
14. Treason, Maybe?
Christy ,   Boston, US   (10.18.07)
Since Ashraf Qaisi is an Israeli citizen(Israeli Arab), could he be charged with treason? I was just wondering if he could be charged with anything that might have a death sentence attached to it? Israel has had war declared on her. During wartime many countries consider someone helping the enemy, like this man, worthy of shooting.
15. Israel should have the Death Penalty
Laila ,   Montreal, Canada   (10.18.07)
Israel should have the death penalty terrorists.
16. #13, how about IDF soldiers, do they have a license to kill?
Hi Fi   (10.18.07)
Hundreds of pal children shot, and far more pal's killed by the guns of the occupation, many of them deliberately ! No one is being tried, the Israeli judicial system is rotten, whenever there is an evident murder of a pal by a jew they consieder the jew crazy, mentally sick, and let him free.
17. Just lost ALL respect fro Rami from Nazereth
Adam ,   Jerusalem, ISRAEL   (10.18.07)
Aside from DR. Goldstein, name ONE attack by a Jew from the West Bank against a Muslim from the West Bank. Just ONE. Please ONE. Aside from that, why did the Muslims who Dr Goldstein Killed have a weapons stockpile in the Maarat HaMachpela??????? Why weren't THEY tried for breaking the law when they killed HIM which was also illegal? I agree that the law should respect all equally but just name ONE other Jew from the WB who murdered a Muslim from the WB and while you're at it name a Jewish terrorist organization that attacks Muslim civillians.
18. #12: I Do Supoprt The Death Penalty
emanon ,   USA   (10.18.07)
Given the right circumstances, I feel it is very justified. In my opinion, this is one of them. As I said, I do not know Israeli law. Apparently Israel does not have the death penalty. That being the case, you are forced to do things like multiple life sentences. On the other hand, release him back to Hamas and make a great show of it while pointing out how much the Israeli authorities appreciate his cooperation in supplying the names of Hamas leaders and their locations, and I'm sure a death sentence will be the result.

israel still has the death penalty but it hasn't been used since the execution of eichmann in 1961.
20. What about the money his family his receiving?
eliyahu   (10.18.07)
There was a time when Israel destroyed the houses of a terrorist's family. The logic behind it was that terrorists' familys get paid monthly stipends (sizable ones) by the terrorist organizations. This man will sit in jail until his pardon. But for many years to come, he will be happy that his family is well cared for. Justice? How about freezng the bank account of his family and not permitting funds to come in? The venerable israeli court system said that knocking down a house was cruel and unusual, except where it applies to Jewish settlers.
21. #14: Treason or diplomacy?
eliyahu   (10.18.07)
It used to be illegal to even talk to a sworn enemy of Israel. That was changed AFTER Peres met with Arafat. Ashraf took money and helped precisely the same organizations that our politicians are meeting. The left wing provided terrorist organizations with weapons, money, bases of operations. So what is the difference between ashraf sitting in a car with terrorists and Peres/Ollmert/Barak?sharon sitting at a table with Arafat/ Arekat/Abu Mazen/Barghouti?
22. He has a look like he's joining a men's club
Josh   (10.18.07)
He really looks like he could care less. He will be joining his freinds in prison and eating regular meals. Capital punishment is the way of Torah. I agree we should bring it back. Lets see him smile then.
23. He Will Be Released & He Knows It
Adina Kutnicki ,   US   (10.18.07)
The whole system of 'justice' in Israel is perverse. The fact that this mass murdering scum will be coddled in prison is a FACT. One only needs to look at how the mass murdering terrorist Barghouti is treated and feted. Sure, he is being groomed as a PA 'leader'. Regardless, this scum will see his family, friends, get a free education etc etc. All the while the Jews he killed are stone cold DEAD!
