..just one more indicator as to how shamelessly racist we are, while we hypocritically accuse others of the same
2. Lack of information
Shalom   (10.19.07)
If this is the case here, then imagine how much information they are not revealing on other matters???
3. It sorta makes sense

If the family doesnt know and things remain quiet and its easier for Israel to negotiate in the background for the release of the remains. If you have the family yelling and screaming for Olmert to do something and appearing on TV and whatnot, that turns the heat up to get him back and Hizbullah uses that heat to extract even more from Israel. This was a lousy situation all around, but as bad as it was not to tell the family, Israel would have paid a higher price in the end if Dwait's fate had become publicized. This is not racism on Israel's part against it's Ethiopian community. It was obvious what happened to Regev Shalit and Goldwasser so there was no hiding iy.. Less so with Dwait. Everyone needs to calm down and assess the situation more rationally.

ok...if israel kept the whole thing a secret for what ever reason it might be why was hizbullah quiet about the matter when its to there interest that the matter be known to the israelis , hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm someone explain this one please ....
6. That, is just not nice. Wouldn't you
Yakov ,   USA   (10.19.07)
want to know if a family member were taken? It's really an issue of humanity.
7. Prejudice

Using the word "security" as an excuse & scapegoat allows us to hide our prejudices & inefficiencies, as always. I wonder if this was a non-Ethiopian family, would the Government still choose to withold the news? Security is a convenient means of justifying just about anything.

I agree, it makes sense to withhold intelligence information until all the dialogue with Lebanon is over. Remember, it is not with regular humans that Israel has to deal on a regular basis! Too bad the family could not be kept informed of the victim’s fate, but there is no reason to believe this was for racist or callous reasons. I am more worried by all the pejorative tackbackers who spew their usual anti-Israel crap without having the least acquaintance with the facts. Why not acknowledge that Israel was willing to expend valuable negotiation capital in obtaining the return of this unfortunate fellow’s remains, despite being on the fringe of Israeli society?

...despite being on the fringe of Israeli society ? you wrote . On the fringe because of being of Ethiopian origin ? This is simply racist . What makes maybe a difference with our captive soldiers , is that he was drowned , not a military victim .

My hunch is that if this "unfortunate fellow" had been called Hirschberg or Rabinowitz, or Tannenbaum the Hirschbergs and Rabinowitzes and the Tannenbaum's would have brought the matter to the attention of the public. The authorities here recognized the marginality of this family and cynically behaved as it did. The callousness is to be seen in the aftermath, when not a single Israeli official was to be seen at the funeral.
11. racism? no, just the usual stupidity & disregard for...
dante ,   uk   (10.19.07)
just the gov't's usual disregard for the people. Israel has a counterfeit gov't, a make-believe gov't, an imitation gov't. Israel is lead by hollow men who care nothing about the people, the country, the history, etc. a huge collection of clowns, no insult intended to any circus performers.
12. dante, I'm afraid you're 100% right.
