26 Talkbacks for this article
1. Now if the they would only put all that work...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (11.19.07)
...into solving the problem of Agunot, rather than new and kosher ways to make their own lives easier. Shouldn't the joy of the Shabbat for believers be enough, without the fresh hot cuppa Java?
2. shabbat techonologies
STANLEY MILNER ,   Tel aviv   (11.19.07)
as per my understanding of the 'laws of shabbat' the whole idea is to get away from everyday life and and not think abbout work and things like that.
3. More modern inventions...
John ,   Jerusalem   (11.19.07)
...to help people circumvent archaic laws.
4. Shabbat
Juan ,   Spain   (11.19.07)
What a load of hypocritical nonsense
5. This gadget sounds like the "Holy Robot" that can write a
Joseph P. ,   Jerusalem   (11.19.07)
Torah - but from left to right. http://www.forward.com/articles/11923/
6. #2 These gadgets are for undecided secular/religious
Joseph P. ,   Jerusalem   (11.19.07)
They want the good world of the religious, but yet they want to enjoy secular life too.
7. If these gadgets help
Esther   (11.19.07)
the elderly, sick and the infirm, then keep quiet all you holy 'know nothings'. The coffee gimmick is unnecessary, and in rather bad 'taste', but calm down. I'm waiting for the usual boring article any minute now, saying we're not really religious, saying we're trying to 'trick' Gd and all the nonsense that ALWAYS follows these articles and ALWAYS written by a moany groany misery, who keeps nothing. Empty vessels will yet again make the most noise.
8. TO NUMBER 4
David ,   FRANCE   (11.19.07)
Cause you re not Israelite this might sound crazy for you. For us jews its not "hypocritical nonsense".
9. #8 Well said
Esther   (11.19.07)
and that's exactly how we want it. The rain in Spain is not OUR rain.
10. In case of medical need
Damir ,   Russia   (11.19.07)
There is always is 'piquach nefesh' exception, isn't it?
11. Walls around Walls
Sharon ,   Boston   (11.19.07)
Either observe Shabbos or don't. This is as ridiculous as the "Shabbos Elevator." :eye roll:
12. The shabbat phone should only be used in the IDF
Jeff ,   Jerusalem   (11.19.07)
All of the Tzomet technologies are designed for when there is an urgent, pressing (but not immediately life-threatening) need. This is often the case in the IDF. A soldier needs to make a phone call as part of his army duties, but the situation is not immediately life threatening to him. Using this phone is not allowed on shabbat unless there is a pressing health or security need to do so. If there is a threat to life, then one can (and must) use a regular phone to call an ambulance.
13. Not EVERY medical situation
hannah   (11.19.07)
is pikuach nefesh, as you definitely know, and needn't even have written. If it eases life for those who need it, that's wonderful, and these people are doing avodat kodesh. May they go from strength to strength, aiding the observant people who appreciate their work. You others? You can always go shopping or watch tv, or write talkbacks.
14. grey areas
ora ,   Jerusalem   (11.19.07)
these devices are for "grey areas," as it says in the article, not for every shabbat. Nobody is trying to circumvent Shabbat laws, which are perfect in their wisdom and provide us with a spiritual rejuvenation each week. These devices can be used by those who are chronically ill and wish to avoid weekly shabbat desecration. The coffee machine could be used in hospitals and other areas where Jews must work on shabbat (and often must drink coffee to stay awake) and where many are traditional and might otherwise break shabbat to make coffee.
15. No one needs to break Shabbat
Miriam   (11.19.07)
because they want a cup of coffee. These guys seems to think they deserve gourmet coffee. Utter nonsense and it soils the whole article. Get over yourselves spoilt brats, and wait, like with those awful cigarettes you can't live without, till Shabbat goes out. Grow up and set an example to your families.
16. Is this the Zomet Institute?
Jeffrey Steinberg ,   Scarsdale, NY   (11.20.07)
I am not sure if this is new news. The Zomet institute in Israel has been greating these "Gramah" -based products (including a shabbos scooter for frail people) for years. It this is the name of the "halachaic" institute mentioned, then please ignore. When I met with the Zomet institute about 4 years ago they also had an interesting shabbos light that was a cover you place over a lit fluorescent bulb. I have seen similar devices her in the U.S. with a hescher.
17. Deceiving God
Dov ,   Brasil   (11.19.07)
this is ridiculous to me... if one cannot write on shabat, why does one need to create mechanisms that allow him to write?? the same is true for telephone and other ways of trying to bypass tha law.
18. #16
hila ,   Israel   (11.20.07)
The 'Shabbos' light invention originated in the States. Dont tell anyone, except yourself, who and what to ignore. Thanks.
19. #17

20. 18- Hila from Israel
tma   (11.20.07)
What's your problem? You have a problem with Americans coming up with ideas? Your post doesn't make any sense. If you don't know English, go back to reading Russian news articles.
21. #20 What are you taking?
(11.20.07)
The dose is too high/low. Two points were made 1) The light was invented in the States. 2) We don't need americans telling us here in Israel which authorities to ignore. Sorry, nutcase, we've never been to Russia, but you will definitely fit in some gulag there.
22. OUTRAGEOUS
Daniel ,   New York   (11.20.07)
"One of the show's biggest hits was the Shabbat pen, which uses self-dissolving ink that disappears 24 hours after writing. "We're not talking about life and death situations here ...but for all those little grey areas."
23. #20 Your grandma may need it one day
grand daughter   (11.21.07)
boychik. Or mine, if you're one of the empty vessels making a noise about someone elses Shabbat. Some grannies saftas (boobbas in yiddish) have 'grey ' hair lol.
24. Talkback 23 is meant for #22
granny's girl ,   Israel   (11.21.07)
#20 is weirdo
25. Hi-Tek Disguises To Hide Errors of Dark Ages Mindsets
Paqid 16 Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (11.21.07)
26. Talkback: Modern Talmudic tisch
Bavli ,   San Diego, CA   (11.21.07)
I love talkbacks. It is like studying Talmud. You have the headline (the mishnah), the article (the gemarah) with different quotes as commentary, and then all these scholars around the table debating the finer points to truly delve into and draw out the true meaning. Even all the participants who consider this archaic thinking, you are being drawn into the debate on such thought. If it were truly meaningless to you, you would not disparage, you would only ignore. It is beautiful to see so many people apparently withdrawn from the teachings of their people starting t'shuvah.
