1. what do you expect?
m ,   toronto   (11.29.07)
when people treat mea shearim like a trip to the zoo? instead of coming to join in the holiday festivity they treat the neighbourhood like a zoo to be viewed.
2. Mea Shearim
JK ,   NYC   (11.29.07)
Jews that is real Jews are not freaks or curiosities but real people and should be respected as such and not laughed at.
3. MEAH SHEARIM IS NOT A ZOO!
bill handel ,   brooklyn, usa   (11.29.07)
Where is the Mayor of Jerusalem? Why doesn't he make arrangements that will let the tourists satisfy their curiousity, without disrupting the lives of the people in Meah Shearim. After all, even in a zoo, there are signs that warn: "Don't feed the animals."
4. discusting!
(11.29.07)
You are discusting! You DON´T FIGHT FOR ISRAEL, YOU DON´T DIE FOR ISRAEL, YET YOU LIVE IN ISRAEL, PEACEFULLY... THAT´S INCREDIBLE, WHILE SOLDIERS ARE DYING FOR ISRAEL IN ORDER FOR YOU EXTREMISTS TO LIVE IN A FREE DEMOCRATIC ISRAEL, YOU... ALWAYS APPEAR IN THE NEWS, KILL EVERY SINGLE PEACE PROCESS... AND NOW YOU WANT TO ATTACK TOURISTS! PATHETIC! GO LIVE IN IRAN!
5. "seculars" have a right to celebrate Hanukkah unmolested
disgusted, but not ,   surprised in usa   (11.29.07)
and without harassment in the Holy Land. Not every Jew wants to be an extremist Orthodox with a closed mind and an intolerant attitude. When I see Orthodox Jews at the grocery store in my neighborhood, I don't spit at them or tell them how to dress. If they can't deal with diversity among their FELLOW JEWS, then they should move to a Muslim country, where the people are equally intolerant.
6. Would they really throw eggs?
Justin ,   New York   (11.29.07)
at fellow jews? hipocrites....
7. We should shower them with Pig dropings
Mike ,   Israel   (11.29.07)
8. This is Why Jerusalem Must Be Internationalized
Mr. Knowitall ,   Frostbite Falls, MN   (11.29.07)
These diaper tossing idiots only reinforce why the city of Jerusalem should be internationalized in order to guarantee that the city is open to people of all faiths and not controlled by just one religious group or regime. These intolerant jerks should be arrested for assault and inciting hatred, thrown in jail and then tried for hate crimes if they try to go through with their despicable display of their intolerance.
9. disgusted
irit ,   rehovot   (11.29.07)
These are the same ppl that try to deny us in the gay community freedom to express ourselves. Do we stop them from dressing like clowns everyday? Why do I have live in shame in Haredi areas????
10. Haredim
Naftali   (11.29.07)
Put them all in jail at hard labour. They are Israels Taliban
11. It IS A ZOO . . .
harry   (11.29.07)
When you behave like a monkey throwing feces, then you have no right to complain that people are treating you like a zoo. If they don't want ushpizin, then they should move to a private property reserve and not live in a public city. And, maybe they should be happy that people want to see genuine Yiddishkeit, maybe the viewers would emulate their behaviour if they could just summon up the courage to show how torah-true Jews are supposed to behave. Egg throwing is chilul HaShem.
12. Going to the zoo and promise not to feed the animals
Mike ,   Israel   (11.29.07)
13. Not a Zoo ?
charles ,   petach tikva   (11.29.07)
But sometimes their behaviour is worse than of animals [ their "actions" against this parade for example ]
14. I hope these men put clean diapers
Mottel ,   Israel   (11.29.07)
back on themselves after throwing the ones they're wearing. They obviously know how unsavoury they are, this sad angry sour community.
15. If visitors showed respect this would never happen...
Gedaliah   (11.29.07)
Jews think they can treat other Jews how ever they like. the secular Jews who are curious and would like to tour mea shariim need to act and dress appropriatly and come at designated times. Just think, if any of these tourists were in India, they would not walk into a holy building with a tank top on. In my house we do not wear shoes. They are taken off at the front door. I expect all visitors to follow these rules. If not then do not come in. Same should be for certain neighborhoods. Let them set their rules and if you want to come in then repect the rules. Don't be a dafkanick, just be sensitive to other peoples standard of living. Thats all...
16. They're not real Jews
5th generation ,   Israel   (11.29.07)
It is a sin to waste food. Throwing eggs is a partcular slap in the face, because the price just went up. I may read like a joke, but just think about. It is just more evidence they have no interest in anything sacred or benevolent. If they need something symbolic, they should try the cigarette butts and other garbage tourists leave lying around.
17. They learned this technique from the VIOLENT ZEALOT LEFT who
Joseph P. ,   Jerusalem   (11.29.07)
attacked the people attending the bris of Yigal Amir's son, and also from the attacks towards policemen at their violent fence protests.
18. This article is nothing but LIES
Joseph P. ,   Jerusalem   (11.29.07)
"If" some "zealots" attack it's only those who think that Mea Shearim is a beach and "forget" to wear clothes. These people WOULDN'T DARE PASS ARAB NEIGHBORHOODS IMMODESTLY the way they go to religious Jewish neighborhoods. So if they get attacked with eggs or bleach or goodies from diapers - they fully deserve it. And I hope they will get it in their face.
19. Yes, that it what Moshe did, and the Egyptians chased us out
Shiloh ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.29.07)
What else can one say!
20. Disgrace!
Stephen ,   Minneapolis, USA   (11.29.07)
This behaviour by the so-called religious is a disgrace! I am very relieved that Avraham Aveinu did not treat strangers to pelting by eggs or dirty nappies. Where on earth did these people learn their examples from on how to treat strangers? Strangers are a nuissance? When are humans curious of religious practice a "nuisance"? And as for sensitivities about things like immodest dress or other matters, how about solving this through sensible dialog instead of nasty signs and placards?! You know what? I could think of much better ways to celebrate Chanukah than spending it with these hypocrites in Me'a She'arim! If we lose our compassion, we lose our hearts, we lose something that I think we got directly from Hashem.
21. I hope this is not true…
ER   (11.29.07)
…if so, how can the goyim possibly expect to catch hold of a religious Jew’s shirt tail?
22. Jossele P. wer a mensch
charles ,   petach tikva   (11.29.07)
Be a human . Or is it true that : a behaime blabt a behaime , Jossele wous werd weren fun dir ? What will you become . You are associated with those "nice" hatefull people who contribute nothing to My Nation .
23. The reason they can afford to throw eggs
Secular Eagle   (11.29.07)
is that they don't have to pay for them. We, the idiots who serve in the Army and work for a living, are the ones paying for the eggs these bastards will be throwing at us.
24. #15: So what does that say about the home culture?
Bottom Line ,   Israel   (11.29.07)
The tourists know enough about the area to want to tour it, but can't take the residents as seriously as they do other cultures (i.e. India). I am not condoning disrespect, but the religious zealots clearly come across as freaks worth dismissing even by Jews themselves. As a journalist once wrote, "just because the whole world is against you doesn't mean you're right."
25. They should get used...
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (11.29.07)
because it is so that things happen. Yaacov brought prosperity to Lavan, and to others;Yoseph brought prosperity to Pharaos...Wherever Jews are ,people like to be in.This is fact.Jews and not Jews like to be near. Probably ,the more rightfull the residents, the more people want to be near. The neighbourwods where ortodoxes live, all over the world, end up being a place full of charm ,and are desired by all:Look at Rue des Rosiers ,in Paris;look at neighborwods in NY,Willinsburg, for example...And many more examples I do not recall. So ,the best Mea Sharim residents must do is relax and enjoy their own positive magnetism!
26. To #1: Becouse MS is a zoo unfortunately with a growing ->
Tom ,   Ariel   (11.30.07)
monkey population. If we are realy going to divide Jerusalem why not to leave those "people" on Pali side?
27. YNET PRINTS LIES WITHOT SHAME!
tzioni ,   Jerusalem   (11.29.07)
I am part of this community and anyone who thinks we meet to plan such thing is crazy. We may get carried away in the momment, but these thing are never planned . Ynet did not bring any proof to these secret meetings, not a single source, or any other sort of proof. Lies to trash an entire community is unmoral and undemecratic and definitly not high quality Journalism. Ynet has lowered their standards to those of a third world country. Shame on Ynet.
28. This is what we pay "yeshiva students" to do?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (11.29.07)
They will not defend Israel, but act as vigilantes in mea shearim. We should close the roads in and out of mea shearim. Cut off water and electricity. And stop paying welfare to these parasites.
29. Not even pretending...
jewish mother ,   jerusalem   (11.30.07)
Y-net, this time you didn't even pretend to be impartial. Since when has ANY newspaper referred to a RESIDENT of a neighborhood as a DENIZEN??? Especially one who has politely agreed to be interviewed for your newspaper. Respect works both ways. No secular Israeli would object to being asked to dress modestly inside Vatican City when visiting the art in the Sistine Chapel, or in decorative mosques in Indonesia. What is the problem with being ask to respect another ancient culture?
30. #27 Tzioni
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (11.30.07)
And this is called LASHON HARA ,and it is a very grave thing to be done agaisnt one brother.Words like that can kill. I agree that ,even if a small group planned such a thing,it should not be published as a general behavior. This is Lashon Hara and should never happen among Jews.It is very grave!
