61. Integration/transition classrooms
Isragirl ,   Kiryat Yam, Israel   (12.07.07)
Something is lucking in this article - ah, I know, the school's representative's version of the events! Great journalism, Ynet. Integration is hard. I was thrown into a general classroom at the age of 16 in Nahariya. I couldn't keep up - Hebrew right off the plane? So my mom went out of her way to find a special school in Haifa that had 2 levels of classes for immigrants at every grade level. I went to Ulpan there, then to a beginners' class, eventually progressing into advanced class and graduating successfully. After 10 years of schooling in USSR, these were 2 best school years of my life. In that class we had Russians, Romanians, South Americans (with Russian surnames :o)) and toshavim hozrim - Israeli kids who lived abroad for many years, came back with weak Hebrew and had to catch up in order to succeed. It was a private school, but our education fees were waived, we had to work for school instead - hours at the library, cafeteria, or other jobs. I still keep in touch with my teachers and my classmates from that school (15 years had passed), I love every memory I had there, and I'll be eternally grateful to my Mom for making an extra effort to find this school for me. Not all schools in Israel were accommodating to accept immigrants, be they Russian or Ethiopians, even at the height of aliya from both countries. Maybe the "investigative reporters" should look more closely at the school's story.
62. Racism! Why?
Peretz ,   Martinez, CA USA   (12.07.07)
Does it seem strange to anayone but myself that there is the glaring inconsistency that "We only agreed to admit these Ethiopian students at the municipality's insistence?" Haven't we learned anything at all from the last almost 6000yrs? Especially from the more recent 60? How can we discriminate against a minority group? Haven't we been victims of discrimination long enough ourselves? We should set the example for the rest of the world! We should not be the new anti-semitic group against black jews or jews of abny race or color whatsoever. I, for one, feel proud to include my brothers and sisters from all over the world into my life and embrace the diversity. The cultural mix is so valuable and we still have so much to learn and so far to go. We, as a people, should be building that bridge.
63. Racism in Israel?
author ,   boston, MA, USA   (12.08.07)
You can find examples of racism, sexism, homophobia, and injustice in every country in the world. The fact that you can find racist actions in Israel does not mean that the country's policies are racist. Israel give Ethiopians 10 months of free education and an 80% subsidy of mortgage for their first home, plus free college tuition for any Ethiopian Jew who qualifies. Try going to another country in the middle east as an immigrant and see what you get.
64. Apatheid Israeli style?
Yohannis-the Ethiop ,   UK   (12.10.07)
Israel is showing her true face. I assumed the scar of genocide on Jews has made them ardent human right activists. History shows that Israel supported Apartheid, a system of racial segregation that oppressed black Africans. Now Israeli schools and society discriminates black Jews. Where is this scenario talking place? In 1940’s Germany or really in Israel? Very shameful and disgusting! I am in no doubt that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other holocaust deniers are enjoying this news.
65. Should be Easy to Prove if True
Lev Bronstein ,   Moscow, Russia   (12.14.07)
If an investigation proves that the girls were indeed separated due to academic needs, than that would be understandable, but if their recess times were in fadt segregated then clearly racism is at play. I'm also curious if the girls have a choice whether to take a cab vs. school bus, or whether it is forced upon them. The school takes public money, so an investigation should be conducted find the truth.
66. NO Comparision
King T ,   Dallas, USA   (03.30.08)
Wtf that supposed to mean? America does more to immigrants here and it didn't flew them in in the name of Zionism . Israel is responsible for the Ethiopian Jews because it was the country's policy to gather Jews from all over the world. You can't throw them away now or discriminate against them because they have a different skin tone. Ethiopians are the most beautiful people on the face of the earth, as I see it.
