Releasing prisoners will strengthen the good moderates such as Abbas over the bad extremists of Hamas. There are only two things wrong with this tactic: 1. It has never worked. No matter how many gestures of goodwill Israel makes to the "good" Fatah, nothing changes. Fatah still continues to kill Israeli civilians, Abbas continues to be essentially powerless, and no conciliatory gesture towards Israel is returned by the Palestinians. 2. The left-wing mavens never learn. Their thought processes say to them that if releasing 1000 Palestinian murderers doesn't help peace, release more Palestinian prisoners.
