1. It's Inuit not Eskimos!
Rick ,   Northern Canada   (12.31.07)
Eskimo is a racist and derogatory term for natives of the north. Please change the title of this article. Similar to an anti-Semitic title.
2. great-another broken chain in am'israel
sad again   (12.31.07)
3. Make your fortune and then come home

4. Re: Talkback 1
Mike   (12.31.07)
In Canada and Greenland the term Eskimo has fallen out of favor, is considered pejorative, and has been generally replaced by the term Inuit. However, while Inuit does correctly describe all of the Eskimo peoples in Canada and Greenland, that is not true in Alaska and Siberia. In Alaska the term Eskimo is commonly used, because it includes both Yupik and Inupiat, while Inuit is not accepted as a collective term or even specifically used for Inupiat (which technically is Inuit). To date, no universally acceptable replacement term for Eskimo, inclusive of all Inuit and Yupik people, has achieved acceptance across the geographical area inhabited by the Inuit and Yupik peoples.
5. MIke #4.
Rick ,   Northern Canada   (12.31.07)
Can you do better than directly quote wikipedia? They are not the most reliable source. My point is that for a Jewish newspaper to use an offensive term for a certain group of people is immoral. I personally take offence to this term and find it insulting. I can imagine the response if the situation were reversed.
6. You're not listening Mike...We aren't Canada...
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (01.01.08)
Everyone uses the term Eskimo in Alaska. The tourists all use it. The schools use it.......pretty much everyone. Now, if cow tipping is illegal in India, then we just won't cow tip when we visit India. What's offensive in Canada hasn't migrated to the Great State of Alaska. Politically correct speech isn't dictated from Canada anyways. Just know....when a black man in Alaska refers to his black or white friend with the "N" word......He isn't being derogatory in his mind or his friends. It's a common greeting just like Eskimo is a common reference to the Native people. It's only offensive if you personally interpret in to be so in your country. As of yet.....it means very little in Alaska other than a classification of natives as a group. Being called White, or Black, or Asian is pretty much the same thing. Anotherwords.....the situation is already reversed, and not blown out of proportion.
7. We need a good Falafel stand in Anchorage.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (01.01.08)
I haven't had one since I left Israel.....Maybe a train trip to Fairbanks is on the Agenda.
8. Jews in Fairbanks
DevorahLeah ,   Boston MA USA   (01.01.08)
You'll be surprised (as I was) to know there is a synagogue and a small group of Jews in Fairbanks. They call themselves the Frozen Chosen, and I had the honour of celebrating Hanukkah with them a few years ago. Nice people, although I couldn't get used to the climate, the lack of sun, etc. I gather there's a bigger Jewish community down in Anchorage.
9. Rick #5
Catcher   (01.01.08)
The primary reason Eskimo is considered derogatory is the false but widely held belief that it means "eaters of raw meat", which has an appalling and depreciating ring to it. There are two somewhat different etymologies in available scientific literature for the term Eskimo. The most well known comes from Ives Goddard at the Smithsonian Institution, who says it means "Snowshoe netters". Quebec linquist Jose Mailhot, who speaks Innu-Montagnais (which Mailhot and Goddard agree is the language from which the word originated), published a definitive study in 1978 stating that it means "people who speak a different language".
10. So Rick...
Gary   (12.31.07)
Why don't you write to Nestle to complain about their age old brand of icecream called Eskomo Pies? http://www.eskimopie.com/
11. alaska/eskimos
flaurie s. imberman ,   palo alto, usa   (01.01.08)
your article on falafel is interesting, but plse note that eskimos do not live in alaska, especially not in big cities.
12. Why write about a yorid?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (01.01.08)
Some yorid is making a couple of bucks and you write about it. Most Jews in the states are university grads and make more in a day than he makes in a week,if not longer. We want people to stay here and not leave.
13. 12# Only wants you to write about the rich Jews.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (01.01.08)
Those other Jews just don't rate. Maybe its because 98 percent of the Jews aren't rich.....the ones on YNET....................................................... Maybe that's why they write about the 98 percent, who don't shake down the workers of the world for all their wealth. Write more about the stock market guru.....who sits on his butt and loansharks his money to corporations while doing nothing for the corporation physically. We need more stories about lazy people who invest in Falafel franchises, rather than stories about the guy busting his butt, operating the business making the Falafels. It makes good sense, talking about the upper two percent of the wage earners, while leaving everyone else out of the picture. I'm sure you'll keep two percent of your readers.
14. Keep Frying These Falafel Balls
ZIAD MADDAH ,   Easton,Pennsylvania,   (01.01.08)
Nadav,Keep frying those Falafel.Being lebanese who grew up on Falafel in Beirut suburbs, I just cannot resist it when I go to a Middle Eastern snack restaurant in a nearby city "Allentown" in Pennsylvania,USA. Good food is good for everyone, anywhere, not to mention a HEALTHY one.
15. I just learned more abt Eskimos than falafel
Leroy was here   (01.01.08)
Cool. an intellectual cat fight over political correctness. These cultural articles/talkbacks much more interesting than the military-plitical ones.
16. lost tribe
alan ,   Dixon Entrance, Ak   (01.01.08)
many alaskan natives believe they are the lost tribe and their character traits would indicate this could be more than a far out story v. now where can you find a good black cod or ikura in Tel Aviv do you have a moose cafe? the best seafood in the world comes from the clear cold waters of alaska eat your heart out canadians
17. Well Done Nadav, probably healthier than
(01.01.08)
some of the other food on offer.
18. #2 why think of it as a brocken chain , maybe its another
rachel ,   usa   (01.02.08)
chain that makes that original chain bigger ....the glass is not half empty , its half full ......let's be open minded please .........
19. Do they prefer them to...
Gary   (01.02.08)
Eskimpo pies? LOL
20. Yerida and intermarriage
Jewish Israeli ,   Israel   (01.02.08)
While I certainly have absolutely nothing against Eskimos, it hurts me to see a young Israeli who not only made yerida, but also married out. The only happy ending to this story will be if Nadav's wife converts and they move to Israel. Otherwise, he has broken a Jewish chain of 3500 years, but then maybe only felafel is important to him. What do his parents feel?
21. #20 open your mind--you're dangerous
Mary ,   New York   (01.02.08)
If were up to you, it seems that you would prefer that all people stick to their own kind and not give basic freedom & rights to other peoples. Haven't you learned from history that we should all be free to decide on our own destiny, to tolerate, respect and celebrate our differences, and love people for who they are and not base our opinion of them on their skin color, religion, sexual identity, etc.? Shame on you! Your thinking is dangerous and creates a breeding ground for hatred, racism, prejudice, and bigotry! You scare me! And stick to the story--this is about one's personal success--which you can not define for others.
22. not success
E ,   Canada   (01.02.08)
Intermarriage without conversion is NOT success. Don't care if she is Inuit or Eskimo, but has she converted?
23. #20 Mary-NY Marrying out of our religion
mr ,   israel   (01.02.08)
The Jewish people prefer that their offspring marry within the fold. This doesn't necessarily mean that we are bigotted, it's the means of carrying on our traditions and our religion down through the centuries.
24. Alaskans in Jewish Community
Adam ,   Israel   (01.02.08)
I'm an american oleh living and studying in israel looking to come to alaska for the summer to possibly work on a salmon fishing boat. Any suggestions, connections, etc.?
25. Eskimo name not racist
Tamar ,   Anchorage   (01.03.08)
in response to Rick's accusation - the term Eskimo is not at all a racist name and, in fact, the Inupiat and Yupic Alaska Natives refer to themselves and their culture as Eskimo - several examples - Eskimo Whaling Commission, Eskimo Dancing, Eskimo olympics, Eskimo Ice cream, and many many more. Inuits is a limited term for Natives of the North, and excludes Yupics, Athabascans, Aleuts, Hida and more.
26. Falafel in Anchorage
Tamar ,   Anchorage, AK   (01.03.08)
We have falafel in Anchorage and it is fantastic (this coming from a life long Israeli). It is called Falafel King and it is on 10th and Gambell, right along the New Seward Highway. Owned by an Israeli couple.
27. fishing in Alaska
Noam ,   Anchorage,Alaska   (01.03.08)
Adam, please do come visit Alaska - it is an beautiful and special place but don't count on going fishing here -unless you are content doing it for free. There is no longer any "good money" in Salmon fishing here. In the 80s it was great but today quotas and rules have limited how much a boat can catch and people come from Israel and find disappointment time and time again. This is spoken from experience (as a commercial fisherman) and from deep knowledge of Alaska Fish and Game regulations. It's a great experience, very hard work, very hard to come by and will pay as little as $300 a summer.
28. Wanting to perserve the Jewish people is not racist.
Zionist ,   Canada   (01.03.08)
You should just shut up Mary because you have no idea what you're talking about. Many Jews are against intermarriage because we don't want to Hitler's dream of a Jew-free world to come true. You don't care and don't understand because you're not Jewish. You're just an ignoramaus who knows nothing about Judiasm.
29. Intermarriage
Sara ,   Israel   (01.03.08)
To Mary, We Jews are a very small people that has struggled to survive throughout the generations. We have nothing against other people, but we do want to continue our peoplehood. When someone marries out and the partner does not convert, it is painful to us.
30. Felafel
Hilda ,   US   (01.03.08)
Ah, I remember how I feasted on a felafel for my main meal in the old days living in Tel Aviv. I also remember how I made felafel---from scratch and from memory for the Hadassah festival. It was the first time any of the ladies had ever heard of felafel let alone eat it. It was long before the regular plane loads of tourists or of yordim. They loved it--what's not to love--but I had other fish to fry. Today it's no big deal. You can buy it in a redimix box. I'm more concerned that he couldn't find some nice Jewish girl and settle down and had to travel to Alaska to find a gentile. Felafal may keep his gastronomics Israeli but it won't make his children Jewish.
