Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (02.04.08)
> Rockets on Sderot and Ashkelon > Three soldiers kidnapped and Israel helpess > IDF routed in Lebanon by Hezbolla > Hamas changed from primitive paramilitary to skilled army with advanced weapons > Israel forced to enter negotiations to release Arab murderers > Southern Israel swarming with suicide bombers Yes, with such an impressive record, Barak should support Olmert. He is clearly the best PM Israel can have

6. Ehud the Etrog alert
Ilan ,   Ariel   (02.04.08)
There are no such thing as journalistic ethics nor ethics in government in Sima Kadmon's world. Just interests and such small things as decency and democracy are simply expendable. The goal is a weak PM, corrupt and inept is even better, so long as he is willing to surrender Israeli interests to the Palestinians to avoid prosecution.
7. Are we ready for a change ?
Harold Lane ,   Tel Aviv   (02.04.08)
Since a ceasefire can turn into war at any moment, Israel must retain the territory needed for its defense, and maintain a deterrent military power to prevent the enemy from surprising her. Any sign of weakness is a clear call to the Muslims to renew Jihad, as they have been doing in the Gaza Strip, especially after the unilateral evacuation and the destruction of the whole Jewish region there. It should always be remembered that the Arab Islamic side calls for a ceasefire only when confronted by a strong, determined enemy, and keeps the ceasefire to some extant for as long as the enemy remains strong. There is, therefore, only one guarantee against war and the annihilation of Israel: military strength and the constant display of this strength by winning small skirmishes as well as major wars. Anything that even seems like an Israeli military setback is an invitation to another war. The Arabs and Muslims observe ceasefires only under the threat of terrible retribution. Nothing else. Any Israeli or Western leader who thinks that the Arab signature on a document guarantees that it will be kept, is deluding himself, and displaying dangerous ignorance. For that reason a new leader cannot ignore this alternative as described at : http://israelagainstterror.blogspot.com/2008/01/stop-them-with-clear-cut-victory-part-i.html
8. A irresponsible Dolt
Voice of Reason ,   Here & Now   (02.04.08)
Mr. Ehud Barach could care less about the Israeli populace. For that matter ditto for the rest of the Knesset members. Ehud makes promises and never keeps them. Labor are also a bunch of fumbling useless zeros. Rockets keep flying, bombers are back & the putzes are ready to agree to allow terrorists with blood on their hands be let free.
9. Good of the nation
Steve ,   Fla.   (02.04.08)
One cannot talk about responsibility and the good of the nation and at the same time talk about a government led by Ehud Olmert. This prime minister is an absolute disgrace; a disaster. He brings shame upon every Jew and so does Barak for propping him up. Barak is political prostitute, like his boss. Labor party is in tatters.
10. The Lesser of the Two Evils
Shimon Z. Klein ,   Bat Chefer, Israel   (02.04.08)
Let's face it, Barak really did not have much choice. Had he resigned, there would have been new elections resulting in the Labour Party receiving even less support than in the previous elections. Bibi Netanyahu is waiting in the shadows for such a scenario. A strange alliance, for different reasons perhaps, have been forged between Meretz and the right wing which could result in a new extreme right wing coalition being formed with Bibi at the helm. The left wing would be cutting off their noses to spite their faces if they support Barak's resignation.
11. Very serious propblem
Ron ,   Tel Aviv   (02.04.08)
He says Barak talked to people in his ministry and they told him not leave because they need money for their friends and families (i.e., they need jobs). However, any reservist and other soldiers will think twice before following Barak-Olomert into new war which will start not later than this summer. Everyone knows it. It will be very bloody.
12. BRomises and promises...
David ,   Brazil   (02.04.08)
An adult, who happens to be Israel's most decorated politician, meaning: Mr. Barak will sell the remains of his late ima (with all due respect) to the lowest bidder, if that will serve his self-interests & self-survival efforts. Medinat Israel, its people and his BROmises, are simply disposable commodities. He and Mr. Olmert are currently, the most notorius, shamless, incompetent, amoral and arrogant duo, and sure-shot nominees for the ITUR HA NAKNIK. Israel and its people deserve and are entitled to way better.
13. What a load of BS!
Freejay ,   Israel   (02.04.08)
Not one point made any sense in this ridiculous article, Barak and Olmerts political careers will be finished after the next election. Barak has assured that by remaining in the coalition.
14. Barak knows he has not a chance to win
Harry   (02.04.08)
For personnal reasons he gave cushion to another loser Olmert. When will leaders think about the good of the country rather than the temporary good for themselfs. Do we have such leaders ???
15. LET ME EXPLAIN........................................
AVROHOM BILGREI ,   ZION   (02.04.08)
Sima Kadmon IS A SEUDONYM EFRAT WEISS !
16. She's part of the "anyone but Bibi" crowd
Beth Landau ,   TA, Israel   (02.04.08)
The "anyone but Bibi" crowd are those on the left; journalists, politicians, writers etc. who will do whatever is necessary to prevent Benjamin Netanyahu from gaining power. (all polls show a clear victory for Bibi if and when this failed Govt collapses) Barak's decision was for one reason and one reason only...to keep the reigns of power in the hands of the left - anything to keep Bibi from taking over. Even if that means keeping Olmert, the colossal failure in the driver's seat. This is the equivalent of allowing a drunk bus driver back on the road after he caused a horrible accident that killed his passengers while he was under the influence. I suppose that to Barak's little mouthpiece (Kadmon), being a responsible adult is not taking responsibility for one's failures, but rather making excuses for one's failures...Someone get me a bucket!
17. Where there are no men
Paula Stern ,   Maaleh Adumim, Israe   (02.04.08)
The great scholar, Hillel, was quoted in Pirkei Avot, as saying, "In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man." Ehud Barak had an opportunity to be a man this week. He could have stood up to his promise that he would collapse the government if the Winograd Report confirmed what we have all known from the beginning. There were gross errors in the handling of the Second Lebanon War and these errors cost the lives of our beloved sons. Barak had a simple choice this week: be a man and stand up for those who can no longer tell of the mistakes and bungled leadership that led to many of their deaths, to the endless bombardment of the north and the abandonment of the citizens who were forced to flee on their own because our government couldn't adequately protect them and couldn?t even effectively coordinate their evacuation. Barak could have come away clean, instead he chose to come away with power. Blood was not on his hands from the Second Lebanon War and most believed that had he been in charge of the army and not the Comedy Clown with the big mustache, Amir Peretz, the outcome might well have been different. Olmert, Peretz, Halutz -- these were the ones who failed the nation and the army. Barak would have realized that you can't throw men into battle without supplies; that you can?t stretch the supply lines. Barak would have realized that you can?t rush into battle without intelligence reports, without understanding what your enemies had been busy doing in the six years since last you tread on their turf. Olmert was doomed to come out of the Winograd report smelling like last week's rotten fish and it is no surprise that he lacks even the slightest amount of dignity; that his vast ego has long since surpassed whatever interest he had in doing what is right and honorable. That Dan Halutz and Amir Peretz are no longer in the government is to their credit. They managed, perhaps too little and too late, but at least in some measure, to put their country above their own careers and interests. No one expected Olmert to resign; the man lacks the integrity and leadership that making such a decision would require. But the Israeli public did expect Ehud Barak to stick to his promise. Winograd has come back. Olmert has been proven a failure. After all the spinning is done, the bottom line, as Winograd confirmed, is that we lost the war that we started. We failed to bring Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev home. We failed to protect our citizens of the north. The report is in. Barak swore to bring down the government. In a place where there are no men, Hillel said, be a man. The very next line in Pirkei Avot, says, "Moreover he saw a skull floating on the surface of the water and he said unto it: Because you drowned others they drowned you." Olmert drowned soldiers in Lebanon and so he and his government will fall. Ehud Barak has failed this week to be the one man in Olmert's government, the one last hope for dignity and the quest to do what is right for the bereaved families and those who suffered from their lack of planning. Instead of drowning the man responsible for the failure, Barak has just attempted to drown the souls of those who died in the Second Lebanon War. He would be wise to heed the words of Pirkei Avot, for in the end, it will be his political career and selfish ambitions that will be drowned.
