We lost a great American.

A great loss to the USA, to the State of Israel.,to the world as a whole. My condolences to the entire family.

I just googled his name so that I could learn more about his life. I was shocked to read that his wife and both his children are Mormons. I find it hard to understand how a man that barely survived the holocaust and witnessed his family being murdered would then after the war marry a "non-Jew "and raise two non -Jewish children. His wife , who is Zsa Gabour's cousin, was origonally from a Hungarian Jewish family.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Tom Lantos. He was a very special person who was a gift to us all. His wisdom and love will continue to flourish through his large family and grow in the years to come. You are blessed among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I guess Tom Lantos believed in "live & let live" concerning the fact that he married a non-Jew etc. The fact that his wife was a non-Jew didnt stop him from being a good Jew & strongly supporting Israel.

Congressman Lantos was a man of many accomplishments, and he will be dearly missed. Among the achievements and acts of "moral authority" for which he should be praised, however, we should not forget his visit to Mr. Assad last fall with Nancy Pelosi, or his bitter condemnation of the "arrogance" of U.S. foreign policy over the past few years upon assuming his committee chairmanship- a foreign policy that has been chiefly marked by strong support for Israel and its security interests, over the protestations of diplomats the world over.

Don't worry there will many more generations of Zionists to court the future Presidents of the United States for support. I'm not going to lose any sleep over your usual anti-Israel rantings. Also, for the record, all the candiates - Clinton, McCain and Obama as well as other ones that have dropped out like Giuliani etc have all pledged their full support and admiration for the DEMOCRATIC state of Israel. Out of the many Arab/Muslim countries in the world, how many can claim to have US support and be DEMOCRATIC? ................0! The support for Israel will last another 60 years and then another and then another ad infinitum!

After what he and millioms of others went through, I can understand him marrying out, losing his faith etc. But whatever his alledged marriage choice, he remained a proud Jew and a strong lover of Israel and the cause of religious freedom and persecution of minorities.

About Tom Lantos, I don't know anything about him having a Mormon wife but I don't doubt what your research has uncovered. However, please know that his Holocaust background imbued within him a sensitivity to the oppressed and the downtrodden everywhere. As such, he became a shining example of the best of Jewish values, even to a non-Jew like me. As a Bay Area resident, I can tell you that he was a HUGE supporter of Jewish and Israeli causes, appearing at proIsrael rallies even when not in his district. He was a man who didn't let his success erase his sense of who he was, where he came from, and what the lessons learned from his background compelled him to fight. I do understand that there is a lot of concern among Jews about intermarriage and assimilation, but I just want you to know that Mr. Lantos was a beacon to many people and a shining example. Even if married to a nonJew, he did more to pass on Jewish values than many.

You should come visit Israel again. As for Tom Lantos, he arrived in America penniless. His mother and most of his family were murdered in the holocaust. In America he became a great success and very well respected. Yet he leaves this world with non-Jewish children and grandchildren. Was that not Hitler's goal, a juderein world? In 1999 I made aliyah from Canada. Even though I helped alot of people in my medical clinic I saw that the writing was on the wall. I was a secular Jew only dating gentiles. Now in Israel I also am helping alot of patients. Yet now I have a Jewish wife, a year and a half Jewish baby and G-d willing another baby will be born to us in May. It is my feeling that there will be very few if any secular Jews left in the diaspora by the year 2100.

I think there is some confusion as I have never visited your country, but some day I will. About Tom Lantos, while I understand that intermarriage and assimilation are big concerns among Jews, I think my main point is that he was a good man and left behind quite a legacy, and for that he is to be lauded. And about his Mormon wife, we cannot always choose with whom we will fall in love. Sometimes it just happens. And if he has non-Jewish children and grandchildren, perhaps some day some of them will convert to Judaism. I'm sure if I was one of his progeny, I would feel an inner call to look into it. So please take heart that perhaps not all is lost, and perhaps much will ultimately be gained. You are right that Hitler wanted a judenrein world. Tom Lantos survived the Nazi Holocaust, but not the Silent Holocaust. We Jews are a tiny people and if we intermarry and assimilate, that will be the end of the Jewish people. Did it bother Mr. Lantos that after losing his family in the European Holocaust, that he lost his descendants in the Silent Holocaust? I read that his wife was born Jewish, converted out, and was also a cousin of Zhazha Gabor. Zhazha, too , along with her mother and sisters became Christians. Is this the future of Galut Jewry? Anyone who wants Jewish descendants should move to Israel where even the secular almost always remain Jewish.

There's an awful lot of noise about this so-called "silent holocaust," a phrase that trivializes the actual holocaust. If you follow the definition of Jew in the Torah, then Mrs. Lantos and the Lantos children are Jewish. So where's the "silent holocaust"? Many Jews who died in the Holocaust were Christians by belief, and yet we count them as Jews. They died because they were Jewish. If you ignore Torah and say that Christian beliefs makes a Jew not Jewish, then stop counting Christian Jews in the Holocaust numbers. It amazes me that some people here could turn your nose up at a Jewish hero and holocaust survivor, simply because he loved his wife, and allowed her to raise the children in her own faith, just as the children of a Jewish mother are expected to be raised Jewish. But I'm glad to see that more rational and respectful voices prevail.
