Evidently, Barak believes giving away the Golan would bring peace. That's what he thought when we ran out of S. Lebanon, causing our current problem with Hezbollah. He also supported disengagement from Gaza, another big-time mistake. And, he stays in Olmert's crap coalition for the sake of his failed political career while justifying another phoney peace deal. The Syrians, as well as their proxy, Hezbollah, are firmly in the Iranian orbit. Syria is far more interested in de-stabilising Lebanon to regain control than they are in the Golan.

5. don't mess with barak
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (02.21.08)
he knows how to play the syrians to his advantage. as opposed to taking a hard line and saying never to cede the golan, he knows that the politics of dangling it in from of syria only makes bashar look like the problem without actually sacrificing anything. just like his father, baby assad cannot make a deal for the golan because that is not what he wants. it's all or nothing with assad and everyone knows that.
6. goodwill gesture....funny!!!
George Saliba ,   Canada   (02.21.08)
Hezbollah enter the geopolitical strategy of Syria and Iran as important player in the region .Hizballah is there to stay as long as there is Middle East conflict .Only after a signed peace agreement with Israel, Syria might cut ties with Hizbollah this should be more than clear.
7. I think Lebanese anti-Hizbullah groups may have hit Mughniya
Jake   (02.21.08)
The timing was on the anniversary of Hariri's assassination and the place could be seen as a clear snub to Damascus, after all the assassinations. It could have been Hariri-loyalists, Jumblatt-loyalists, or reconstituted Phalangist elements. Olmert would not have had the guts for such a professional, well-executed operation.
8. Why can Barak say, if....
Eyal ,   Boca, USA   (02.21.08)
a war erupts with Hizbolah, it will extend to Syria and Iran, unless they stop supporting Hizbolah? This way you tell the Syrians that there country will also get bombed, if they support Hizbolah, even though the Syrians wouldn't care about any peace deal with Israel? Barak is so soft.
9. George Saliba, that's Dhimmi talk
Jake   (02.21.08)
Just listen to yourself. All due respect, you ain't no Bashir Jumayil! Don't you get it, Hizbullah has nothing to do with defending Lebanon and Lebanese people. It is an organization based on Islamic Jihadism dedicated to the destruction of Israel, using Lebanese territory as a spring board, and acting on behalf of Syrian Baathists and Iranian Ayatollahs. I just heard on Jpost.com an interview in Lebanon of the demented Norman Finkelstein, who says Israel must suffer defeat, and Hizbullah is the vehicle for this defeat, and he did not even allow the Lebanese interviewer to respond or dispute. Finkelstein is not dedicated to Lebanese freedom, he doesn't give a damn about the Lebanese or Arabs. As a devotee of anti-Zionism and international radical socialism, he is dedicated to the destruction of Israel. His vituperative talk shows he views the Lebanese as HIS slaves in HIS war against Israel. Beware of such nutcases.
