mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (02.23.08)
i prefer to not behave like the palestinians, who willingly thier citizens for the supposed "greater purpose". if i lived in sderot experiencing what they do, knowing that my protectors (the government) preferred to appease foreign nations at my expense, i'd do about anything to try to stop it, too. it's a pitiful shame that these israelis must endure this terror and suffer for the actions of others far away.
3. Dealing with the devil
Reality Check ,   BaGolan   (02.23.08)
Olmert cares as much for Sderot as does Haniyeh and Nasrallah
4. And for how long would such an "agreement" last?!!!
me ,   here   (02.23.08)
The only way to negotiate here is to beat them back into their caves, irreversably, and make our own demands completely clear - and leave no room for interpretations... As for the mayor's suggestion, we have all SEEN IT, DONE IT, BEEN THERE before! And the results are striking. (No pun intended.)
5. Pathetic.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (02.23.08)
These are the words of someone defeated not by Kassams but by Olmert. Here you have the mayor of an Israeli town abandonned by his own country, betrayed by his own gov't. This is truely pathetic.
6. The only way to win
Concerned Israeli   (02.23.08)
We mustn't talk with Hamas. We must crush them. This is the only way to defeat terror.
7. People of Sderot
Bob ,   Ft Mill, SC, USA   (02.23.08)
Tell your Mayor no to any form of talk with Hamas! Get yourselfs some mortor tubes and rocket launchers. When a missile or missiles are fired at you, you respond in kind with overwhelming accuracy and force. Terrorist only understand one thing. The sooner they die, the sooner they get to their 72 whores. Give them the opportunity they want... blow them to hell.
8. Talk to the devil = You become the devil. Mayor is a fool.
Gary A., MD ,   Boston MA USA   (02.23.08)
Kill the devil. Don't have tea with him.
9. Use Your Head: Kosovo Declared Iindependence
Michael ,   United States   (02.23.08)
Declare independence from the Israel. Negotiate a separate peace. Maybe it could be a model for other cities in the Israel. Ashkelon, Tel Aviv, even Jerusalem. Michael

11. Suicidal Israeli Mentality
Shlomo ,   Sderot, Israel   (02.23.08)
I lived in Sderot for most of this year - I know the Mayor - and it is clear that he should resign. Talk to Hamas! Sure - only problem is they would kill any Jew who came to Gaza and tried that. I know how much trauma this man has been through - but to what does HAMAS have to gain from "10 years of no missiles"? In fact, this article and the mentality behind it, is EXACTLY why Hamas is winning its war of extinction against Israel. And even more insane, how does Israel LOSE its morality by defending its children against terrorist barbarians? IT IS JUST THE REVERSE - Israel has lost its "morality" by NOT using overwhelming military force to defend the 5,000 kids in Sderot alone that have been traumatized for life. Has Eli Moyal lost his mind? It is just this article and mentality that will cause HAMAS to double its fire - this is an article of insane and traumatized surrender - please Eli - resign as mayor as your promised/threatened to do - we need a new leader in Sderot - one that does not view an overdue military offensive as "immoral". You are a good man, Eli, but the poison of the Israeli suicidal death march mentality has destroyed your sense of right and wrong. With Israelis like this in the lead - Israeli is in existential danger of a new Holocaust. Eli, go and talk to Hamas - and let us have a mayor ready to fight for the lives of Sderot citizens and not "talk to the devil", but "destroy the devil". The pseudo peace-addiction of modern Israeli culture is the height of immorality. A secular coward culture (Tel Aviv) is fighting a sincere yet warped religious crusade (Hamas/Hizbullah/Iran) and the future of Israel is in grave, grave danger. Sderot is the future of the Jewish People - at least we can't say we were not warned. The Jewish People's tolerance for self-inflicted pain seems to have no limits and gravely desecrates the reputation of Judaism as well. The world disdains the weakness of the modern state of Israel - so this "strength of restraint" is backfiring against Israel - literally. We allow our citizens to die hoping for world approval - and the result is a powerful global surge of anti-semitism. When will Israelis and world Jewry get sick and tired of sitting on a rusty nail? Soon, if we are to avoid Holocaust II - and this time in the "Promised Land".
12. shooting from the lip
tom ,   toronto, canada   (02.23.08)
this is a perfect example of how NOT to make national policy. first, it concedes defeat, which will only encourage the arabs to fire more qassams, not less. if the withdrawal from gaza did not bring peace, why should a further retreat? second, there is no "morality" to letting terrorists attack your civilians, and no "immorality" to fighting a war to protect them. but tying the idf's hands will only make it easier for hamas to keep attacking you. the arabs have declared a genocide to kill all israelis and drive them into the sea - why is this not a rallying cry for israel, and for every member state in the united nations, to fight to protect israel? such talk, possibly born of desperation, is nevertheless not a good way to make national policy or military strategy.
13. hamas
colin   (02.23.08)
The mayor of sderot has very viable intentions. He must also be advised that by his foolish attempt tp speak to hamas under any condition is what they want. The talking will give them legalization and open to extortion against Israel.Mr Moyal must rather instruct all avenues to let the IDF whittle the terrorists.

Bob ,   S. Orange NJ USA   (02.23.08)
I believe many jews suffer from holocaust guilt. They can't do to others what has been done to them. The hateful killing of jews. The idea that jews who consider life precious and sacred would be labeled murderers by the world community is something they can't stomach and they also believe that if you kill one person you are destroying a future world. Unfortunately they have become the chosen ones that have to destroy these inhumane murderers or they will be destroyed. The lesson they have to learn is that some people do deserve to die. World leaders need to stand up and declare that anyone who believes they have a god given right to kill those who do not believe in allah do not deserve to live. No one has the right to kill innocent people.
15. #11 Shlomo, Sderot. Bravo.

I think you got it exactly right.

17. We want to understand
gilbert ,   ashkelon   (02.23.08)
Begging Hamas to stop firing Missiles has a cost:what Moyal is ready to offer in exchange ?That is the real question .We all know Hamas demands are clear and deafening::get out from Sderot to-morrow and later, let us say after-tomorrow,from Israel !!!!So,perhaps Moyal is offering to stay in Sderot as Dhimmis,as he was living in Morocco
18. Olmert has defeated Sderot - Not Hamas
Squalid Ibn Harman ,   Qtir   (02.23.08)
19. Eli Moyal lost his mind and not fit to serve
reuven ,   usa   (02.23.08)
he must resign but the pepole od sderot and israel must rise and this foolish goverment to resign.hamas see this as a victory when a mayor of city stannd with defeated mentality because he represent his city.israel must use its army to crush hams with no mercy and make gaza ruble dump.
20. How high can you throw your hands in the air, Mayor?
Cameron ,   USA   (02.24.08)
One does not "cut a deal" with those yearning to obliterate your family or folk. #8 has you pegged just right.
21. 20 - easy for you to say since you have no clue
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (02.24.08)
you're obviously willing to sacrifice a certain amount of people for whatever position you hold. live in sderot for a few years and you won't be such a self righteous big talker. i'm sure if the mayor of sderot could fight back, he would not hesitate to do so. but he can't do anything but get shelled, praying that each one doesn't kill someone he loves or himself. do they deserve to live this way while decision makers don't? put your money where your mouth is. until then, keep it shut.
