2. Rosa Luxemberg?
avi ,   nj   (02.25.08)
Since when is she someone we should be proud of? Rosa Luxemberg turned her back on us and gave credence to the "backstabbing" theory.
3. Rosa Luxemburg contributed to Judaism???
Jake   (02.25.08)
This is the Rosa Luxemburg who, in a 1916 letter repudiated the concern of a friend with the plight of the Jewish shtetls in Eastern Europe that had been targetted by pogroms: “Why do you come with your particular Jewish sorrows? I feel equally close to the wretched victims of the rubber plantations in Putumayo, or to the Negroes in Africa with whose bodies the Europeans are playing catch-ball... I have not a separate corner in my heart for the ghetto: I feel at home in the entire world wherever there are cloud and birds and human tears.”

first its Luxemburg [ not ...bErg ] You can't deny that she was born Jewish and that she had a big influence . And that's the aim of this encyclopedia .
5. Jake , try to read !
charles ,   petach tikva   (02.25.08)
It's not their contribution to Judaism , it's their contribution to world culture and their influence to the society . Rachel Varnhagen had a cultural "salon" in Berlin . Did you hear once of Fanny Hensel ? musician , and sister of Felix Mendelsohn Barttholdy ? Or Alice Salomon , social worker ? Is Lise Meitner known to you ? They all had an influence on the society , but many were converted , married to non Jews too . They are considered Jewish , but did'nt make any contribution to Judaism , that's not the purpose .
6. Here's a "famous Jewish woman" for charles
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (02.26.08)
Virgin Mary had a more profound effect on world culture and civilization than Rosa Luxemburg and Emma Goldman
7. Kyle , WRONG
charles ,   petach tikva   (02.26.08)
It was her son who made her famous .
8. I dare them to open-source the contents online
Serge ,   Montreal, Canada   (02.27.08)
Imagine the transformative power of this project, if its contents were available freely on the Internet under a Creative Commons license allowing free use for non-commercial purposes. As a bonus, the encyclopaedia would become more famous, and more paper copies would be sold.
9. As an alternative -- name your price!
Serge ,   Montreal, Canada   (02.27.08)
If those who create the encyclopaedia are uninterested in open-sourcing it for wide consumption via Internet, I offer them this suggestion. Decide how much you think you will earn in revenue from selling it. Raise it by 25 percent. Take that figure, and go to Jewish philanthropists. I guarantee you that paying that "bounty" to free the intellectual property online, and to make that knowledge available to Jewish women and men everywhere onthe world, will be more than worth the cost.
10. Serge , if you are so interested
charles ,   petach tikva   (02.27.08)
What about some personal research ? there are some good websites who lists Jews of all sorts . There are books too [ an encyclopedia of Jewish painters is one of those i have ] And , finally , if you are so interested , buy it
