1. Merkel seems sensible
Avinoam ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (03.17.08)
Why should Olmert make allusions to the Holocaust? It seems a bit tactless considering how brightly Merkel's actions speak. All in all it's good news.
2. Germany to secure Israel give me a friggin break
Al   (03.17.08)
Are you people so damn stupid as to believe this crap? They want you dead so they play the game that they love you, all the while hoping you will weaken yourself by giving up your land. As you give up your land..you are dead. Land is everything...Dumb Fools
3. Merkel and Israel's safety
alan ,   bellaire, texas   (03.17.08)
She equates Hamas murder with building neighborhoods that Israel won in the defensive war of 1967. She has no morals.
4. friends, Friends,FRIENDS!?!?!? Have you no shame?!?!?

5. KEY QUOTE - Inside
Gideon ,   Holon   (03.17.08)
"The rocket fire of southern Israel, as the continuous building in of settlements, make the process harder." To Merkel of Germany and the rest of the world believes: Rocket Fire, Death of Jews = Building Homes Wow, you truly had me there for a second that Germany is the best friend EVA. What a load of bull. Hope your nation and the rest of "Western Society" is overtaken by Muslims, good luck cousins. Wish you all the success in removing Europe and America. You rightly so deserve it.

She did not equate them, she just said that they make the peace process more difficult. This is certainly true. I am all for reading between the lines. Eg. Holocaust denial is always a form of anti-semitism, never academic. But I find it hard to compare Merkel to the kind of people that use false analogies to make their points. Eg. comparing Israeli occupation to the Holocaust. Why don't you listen to her actions and nit-pick less about what you may or may not read between the lines?
10. Merkel says, "Iran must excercise transparency"
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (03.17.08)
Personally, I think they've been quite transparent. There is no question of their intentions. In speech after speech, their president Ahmadinejad & others have clearly stated their aims - our elimination. Towards this end, they have not only developed a nuclear program but they have extended their influence throughout the Middle-East, notably Syria, Hezbollah, & Hamas. The question for Ms Merkel is what practical actions will Germany take against Iran. Pretty speeches & pledges of abstract support do not mean much. Will Germany cut off all trade with Iran? Will they ban commercial flights to Germany? Will they cease all financial transactions? If not, then this is just diplomatic double-talk. I might add that our gov't. is either fooling itself, trying to fool us, or probably both by such pronouncements. My own opinion is that Merkel's visit had more to do with "bolstering" Olmert & pressuring our gov't. to continue our worthless peace process.
11. Merkel and #9
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (03.17.08)
"Settlements are an obstacle to peace" is an interesting theory that fails the test of reality. During the heyday of the "settlements", Arabs had a high standard of living and employment, Jews would regularly visit Kalkilya, Jenin, Ramalla and even Gaza to eat, shop and just live a peaceful life. The more the Israeli government has acted against the "settlements" the further we are from peace. A Jew may no longer enter any Arab ruled city but the greatest test of Merkel's theory was the destruction of Gush Katif. This stroke of geniues brought a war where the IDF was helpless to defend Israeli citizens, led to the emptying of Sderot, brought Ashkelon's strategic sites in danger and increasing antiIsraeli feelings amongst Israeli Arabs. From a situation in 1992 when Rabin said Israel was never stronger and in no danger, Israel is now in a state where her existence is in doubt. Sorry Ms. Merkel, reality proves you wrong.

14. makes sense
Michael ,   Haifa   (03.17.08)
Merkel makes more sense than most of the idiots who govern Israel
15. No "Settlements" In Gaza: No Peace In Gaza
Yishai Kohen ,   YeShA, Israel   (03.17.08)
Obviously, Merkel needs to rethink, because reality proves her wrong.
16. #10, #11, #12
Avinoam ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (03.17.08)
#10 - very funny. :) I also agree, but viewed from Merkel's point of view things must be quite different. It's all very well to talk about cutting trade, but that hurts the economy, so it will take some convincing in her government. And naturally part of politics is just politics. Our govt. of course has been at a loss for ages. #11 - interesting theory, but concurrence does not prove causality. How exactly to you suppose settlements help the peace process? #12 - good point
17. Hope for Peace ?
Jean Van Daem   (03.17.08)
"Be gone. Die anywhere you like, but don't die here." PA TV program on Jaffa (Tel Aviv): "It is time for you [Israelis] to be gone. Live wherever you like, but don't live among us. It is time for you to be gone. Die wherever you like, but don't die among us. We have the past here. We have the present, the present and the future. So leave our country, our land, our sea, our wheat, our salt, our wounds. Everything. And leave the memories."These words of hate are the parting moments of yet another program on Palestinian Authority television calling for the destruction of Israel. The words, calling for the expulsion of every last Israeli from Israel, are spoken while the screen is showing Jaffa-Tel Aviv, Israelis and Israeli flags. Official PA TV has aired this twice in recent months. The program about Jaffa opens with a revision of history, by casting the ancient Canaanites as Arabs. By doing this, the more than 3,000 years of Jewish history in the area are pre-dated by a fabricated Arab history. (The Arab Conquest actually took place in the seventh century of the Common Era.) Jaffa, a part of Tel Aviv, is defined as a Palestinian city, and all of Israel's coastal cities, Acre, Haifa, Caesarea, Ashdod, Ashkelon and Jaffa, are said to be situated in what is "known today as Palestine." According to this PA program, Israel is already non-existent.The final words of this television program are those of Israeli-Arab poet, Mahmoud Darwish, calling for the expulsion of every Israeli: "Die wherever you like, but don't die among us." 20. German's Passions
Oscar ,   Sydney, Australia   (03.18.08)
She is another classic, isn't she? Arabs are used to every available tools to express horrors and respects. I wonder if she believes in humanity as much as she claims? We will see! Cheers, Oscar
