Also Thomas (50.) the "debaucheries" of the Weimar period you describe were the result of a growing attitude of tollerence for gays that was largely the result of work of Dr Magnus Hirschfeld a gay German Jew who pioneered research into human sexuality in Europe and set up a Sexology Institute in Berlin which amongst other things campaigned for the decriminalisation of gay rights. On taking power Hirschfeld's institute was ransacked and it's library burned (you know the famous footage of the Nazi book burning? That's Hirschfeld's collection).
