1. Pesach
Liora ,   Jerusalem   (04.04.08)
At this rate, will there be anything Jewish left in this country?
2. I'm secular, live in Rishon, and don't eat bread in passover
tFighterPilot   (04.04.08)
But Gentiles have a right to live and exist in Jerusalem.
3. Absurd ruling
Ilan ,   Ariel   (04.04.08)
If someone wanted to smoke in the restaurant it would suddenly become a "public" place in the eyes of the law. This is just judicial incompetence and hubris.
4. another example of the stupidity of the Israeli judicuary.
Rick ,   Sharon, CT   (04.04.08)
and, its betrayal of the Heritage of Israel. the judiciary does not have a clue that by making rulings that defy Israeli law and are contemptuous of Judaism and the Jewish it weakens the democracy that it ostensibly seeks to advance.
5. What is your problem?
Don Saliman ,   Nahal Oz, Israel   (04.04.08)
I am also a secular Jew and for 7 days out of 365,I have no problems eating matzah. 7 days out of the year, you can do without bread. You have many days you can live your secular life in Jerusalem, stop crying over 7 days your life will suffer without bread.
6. Surely, Shas should also support ruling!
A Jew ,   Shilo Israel   (04.04.08)
Shas stays in the coalition even though talks to abandon Jerusalem are widely known. The law of hametz refers to such items being in one's possession. Therefore, if this government, that includes Shas, tries to give up ownership of Jerusalem, what does it matter? If Jeruslaem's inhabitants also decide to throw away their soul-rights in favor of continuing with their ignorant lives, isn't that in keeping with Shas' present path to self-destruction?
7. Not a question of human justice
Andras Bereny ,   Kfar Tapuah, Ephraim   (04.04.08)
The Torah tells us how to behave as Jews. If you, Lahav, don't want to be a Jew in Israel go and open up a pizza shop in the many goy places on earth, not in Jerusalem, Israel. Your "victory" is a chilul Hashem and will backfire on the Jewish people. If not the "religious" aspect, the very fact that you are displeasing your fellow citizens with your sinning in public should make you think and change your conduct. Shops and restaurants are public places per definition as they are open to the public, they don't work on an invitation only basis and with closed doors. You even made your front wall transparent that allows people to see in.
8. I dont get it
zev ,   usa   (04.04.08)
Israels only claim is that we are jews and therefore this land was originaly ours . What's a jew without judaism? at this rate in 10 years we will have no claim on the land. The palis will soon be justified in fighting their war if we keep on this path
9. Pesah and Bread
Millicent ,   Israel   (04.04.08)
I do not eat bread over Pesah, but I am sure that there are many people here(Christians,Muslims , Russians) that do and they should have access to it. Israel is still a democracy and thus certain stores should be allowed to see the basic breads. noone is forcing anyone to buy it during Passover. Besides the price on Matzahs is very high right now, so what will the poor people eat?
10. @ 9
linda   (04.04.08)
I am not a religious Jew, but not eating for one week is a problem? I only eat bread on shabbat and never during the week and if I can do it all the time, others can do is for one week! You can also put some in the freezer, so plzzzz Russians, muslims and Christians can bake bread and in their village they are selling bread.
11. How much time do you give
I.N.Cognito ,   Brooklyn, USA   (04.04.08)
before some Orthodox guys try to destroy the place? Bet here. No money though (I am against betting for money, only for sport!).
12. We have no right ot the land of Israel
Yoni ,   Jerusalem   (04.04.08)
The Jewish people have no right to exist here if they could care less about being Jewish. Of course secular people are allowed to live but why in Israel? O I forgot they cant get a greencard yet...
13. In ancient Israel, restaurants and stores were open on
Rivkah   (04.04.08)
Shabbat. How do I know that? The Prophet Ezra who helped rebuild the wall around Jerusalem when Jews were allowed to do so who had been captives in Babylon, said he would not buy food or wares on the Sabbath. It was not Jews who had businesses open on the Sabbath, it was the children of the land who had moved into the area of Jerusalem while most of the Jews were captives in Babylon. There were options to choose from so that a holy choice could be made.
14. @#12
Mike ,   Netherlands   (04.04.08)
"Of course secular people are allowed to live but why in Israel? " Some of us came to that exact same conclusion. In the end, who is going to defend your sorry ass? @ all the others "Why can't you do without...." This is a question of personal freedom, a question of won't rather than can't. I love matsot, but I will not put up with them for a whole week. Why not? My choice and I applaud this brave guy for standing up. All of you so-called ethic-watchers will have your lights on on shabbes and invent the craziest tech-gadgets to circumvent your own silly rules, shabbat-elevators, electric timers, slow cookers. You are all hypocrites. Monkey see, monkey do, that's all you do. Would you please remember that it is seculars like me that spent time, health and sometimes our lives defending this country. And you go complain about eating pizza on Pesach? Ridiculous!
15. #11
Micha   (04.04.08)
This isn't a moslem country. We don't go blowing up people because we disagree with them.
16. Mr. Lahav and his problem
Benny ,   Yerushalayim   (04.04.08)
Such a pity, that Mr. Lahav does not understand that he LOST the case! We should have only Rachmanut on this guy and many others like him, who refuse to see the truth. We should ask him what makes him a Jew. Most likely he does not have an answer, since he really has no idea. Wishing Mr. Lahav a Pesach Kasher Ve'Sameach, and next year in Jerusalem! hopefully also for him?!
17. # 12, such chutzpa!
DkS ,   J'lem, IL   (04.04.08)
I qoute: "Of course secular people are allowed to live but why in Israel?" You have some balls to make a statement like that! Without us seculars, you and your kind would never have been able to live in the Land of Israel! It is easy to forget that the vast majority of the 6000 Jews who gave their lives during the War of Independence were secular if not anti-religious. Without them, you'd never have had a Jewish country to live in, and without us seculars to defend your sorry ass and provide the economical backbone of the country, that same Jewish state wouldn't continue to exist! And you talk about greencards. You and everybody who thinks like you should be ashamed of yourself. A little respect for people who think and live differently than you goes a long way! Bunch of religious hypocrites and your so-called "ethics and values"! Go live in Afghanistan, you'd find people with a mindset more similar to yours than most sane people here in IL. Everybody wins!
18. Passover Law
mario henrique ,   brazil   (04.04.08)
The law is applied to the jewish people and to the Land, wich include all people, jewish or not !!!
19. 15 - Wrong
(04.04.08)
Ask the child of the Messianic family that was blown up last week. Police suspect religious Jewish suspects.
20. This is why we lost the land
Tony ,   San Diego   (04.04.08)
We need to start folowing the scriptures and stop disobeying G-d. Mr Pizza maker, if you had more faith you would realize that He provides. So close for a week and celebrate the Holiday with your family. You will be blessed!
21. I'M JUST CURIOUS.....................................
JESSI CHRISTIAN ,   OMAHA, NEBRASKA   (04.04.08)
THIS STUPID ANTI JEWISH DECREE HAS SO MANY SECULAR "PEOPLE" UP IN ARMS, TRAUMATIZED AS IF THIS; MIGHT HAVE BEEN, A REFERENDUM ON THEIR PREROGATIVE TO BREATHE, AND RAISES THEIR IRE TO SUCH A HEIGHTENED LEVEL, ONE MIGHT THINK (SOMETHING PERHAPS THEY SHOULD CONSIDER) THEY HAVEN'T BEEN INFORMED FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF THE REALITY OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A JEW! PERHAPS THEY "SENSE" IT'S AN EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO THEM ! MAY THEY PROCURE A MODICUM OF REASON TO PROCURE THE CAPACITY TO RATIONALLY PARTICIPATE IN THE HUMAN PRACTICE OF "CIVILIZATION" ! OTHERWISE LET'S KILL THEM ALL; HITLER DID, AND HE COULDN'T BE CONCERNED LESS WHETHER OR NOT THEY PARTOOK OF BREAD FOR A WEEK OR NOT ! YOU WOULD THINK A SENSE OF GRATITUDE MIGHT INDUCE THEM TO SOME RECOGNITION OF THE FACT THAT THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN CIVILIZATION & ANARCHY WAS & IS ,THE CAPACITY TO ACCOMMODATE TO SOME SMALL DEGREE THE REST OF HUMANITY.
22. the bigger picture
nathan ,   hoboken,nj   (04.04.08)
perhaps we can look at a bigger picture here - the increasing right movement in haredai culture is causing and increasing left movement in secular culture, so instead of these little antagonistic battles there should be a lot more understanding and cooperation between these species of Jews! if the rightwards would chill out a little the leftwards would feel no need to challenge them on every level they can, and the same is true in reverse. who is going to offer the first hand in a gesture towards tolerance?
23. #1 - Yes, Liora dear...there will be plenty.
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (04.04.08)
24. #5 - Its not a "bread" thing...its a...
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (04.04.08)
"legislating how other people should live their lives based on your religious practices" thing.
25. DkS thinks we owe it all to "them"
Jo Jo ,   London   (04.04.08)
Yoni was not the one who thiught of why Isarel? It was you secular Zionists who were prepared to make your "Jewish" state in Uganda. Of course the religious would have been able to live in the Land of Israel without the seculars, and how much more peaceful would it have been. The establishment of the state has brought little benefit to the religious. It is they who are identifiable in the diaspora and are constantly being targeted by Israel haters who automatically identify every jew as a supporter of the zionist enteprise. 20,000 jews have died defending this country which describes itself as a Jewish state, but which constanly is trying to undo the status quo on the function of Jewish law in the state. Living in the land is a mitzvah, but supporting the anti religious establishment is not. If the state was to end, I am sure it would be the religious who would end up staying in the Holyland. The other seculars will join their freinds in LA, Las vegas and return to their beloved diaspora.
26. # 25 Jo Jo
peter ,   amsterdam NL   (04.04.08)
I understand the(somewhat strongworded)frustration of DkS because he seems to have a better understanding of how the Jewish state came into being than you, Jo Jo. Theodor Herzl was a secular Jew from Budapest which primary goal was to get European Jews a state of their own, where they had control, to avoid the anti-semitism of the late 19th century. The Uganda plan(and a few more: Patagonia in Argentina and the Kimberley in Australia) were rejected by the Zionist Congress in Basel because the majority opted for a place to which the Jewish people had historical roots. Jewish law or halacha was not envioned as the basic law of the state by Ben Gurion, Weizmann and others, they wanted a modern social democratic state where there was a place for all, orthodox and non-Jews as well. The building up of the state of Israel as we now it today was done mainly by secular Zionists, Ben Gurion gave into pressure regarding the role of religion in the new state giving the religious establishment a monopoly on marriage and burial to acknowledge their role during 2000 years in galut. But it doesn't mean that the religious Jews who remained in Jerusalem during those 2 millennia had a pleasant life. Nor that when secular Jews leave for galut that life in Israel will improve. It's a mitzwah to live ba aretz but life would be a lot easier if nobody has a monopoly on the truth. Only ha Shem has that.
27. # 25, again such chutzpa
DkS ,   J'lem, IL   (04.04.08)
"The other seculars will join their friends in LA, Las vegas and return to their beloved diaspora..." In the meanwhile, this SECULAR Jew is living (happily, I might add) in the 'Holy Land'' which I made my home, while you are in London of all places, which as much as I regret to say it, is the capital of the main source of European anti-semitism and Israel-hatred in Europe. Living in the land is a mitzvah, you say? So what are you waiting for? If the state was to end, most of the religious people you think would stay behind here would end up being massacred. And without that state, all those religious Jews would never have been able to live here to begin with! You and your kind are so hypocritical and lack such fundamental knowledge of history beyond your beloved Torah it's simply not funny anymore. It's sad. Every kind of nonsense that you write is just to easy to rebuke. Open your eyes. BTW: @ Peter uit Amsterdam: ik ben (ook) Nederlands.
28. Bread
Eliahu ,   Cleveland, USA   (04.04.08)
No one is forced to buy or eat bread on Passover as a result of this rulling. Those that do are making their own desire which should be respected. One can not ligislate religious thought.
29. Hooray, hooray
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (04.04.08)
Hooray for Eyal Lahav for sticking up for his "right to exist." When he goes bankrupt which he will eventually, will he demand that the haredi soup kitchen serve him a free pork chop?
30. #29
mark ,   ca   (04.04.08)
This man will have way more costumers than he can handle.
