1. What exactly was the objection that even
(04.09.08)
rabbis got involved to such an extent? Have I missed something?
2. It's all about money!!
David ,   Detroit   (04.09.08)
To #1. The article said the bride's parents were philanthropists. They objected to the marriage, and are paying the rabbis to get involved. Oy vey!
3. If that's what she wants....
Daniel Breslauer ,   Jerusalem   (04.09.08)
Then what's the problem? I'm pretty sure her father told her that she doesn't need to expect a single cent from him, so we can be sure that the groom's side isn't doing this for the money. So, who cares? Why should anyone be opposed to it? Even if he is a shababnik, it's still *their* decision, and if they are both adults, their decision should be respected.
4. millionaires daughter
reason ,   amsterdam NL   (04.09.08)
The father would've done better to send his daughter to a boarding school for girls in the US or UK. Apparently he didn't raise her in such a way that she would've waited for an arranged marriage. Now he's afraid that he's got a scrounger/schnorrer with his hands in the family money jar. I suppose he could disown her, but I'd have to check the Talmud to be sure if it's on the books.
5. Not that this story isn't interesting.It is,but...
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (04.09.08)
are Haredim the only Jews in Israel? Don't you have at Jewish section some stories about Jews that are not Haredim nor ultraortodoxes . What has been like Judaism in Israel out of these groups?
6. How disturbing...
שרה ,   ישראך   (04.09.08)
Does anyone else find it totally disturbing that all the rabbis come out of the woodwork to speak out against this marriage but none of them are speaking out against the horrible stories of child abuse we've been seeing in this country lately!? They're busy protecting this young woman from a marriage to another religious Jew when down the road, there are mothers/monsters in prison for beating their children...and the rabbis haven't banded together to say anything about that?!
7. Where are all the demonstrators??
Chayim ,   Bnei Brak   (04.09.08)
If there was a call to all the chareidi neighbourhoods from "prminent rabbonim" that people should protest, how come there were only eight people there? Maybe coz the father of the bride only had $800 to spare on the day!!! Good luck to the young couple. Money can't buy love ..............
8. ALL MY BEST TO THE COUPLE
Phillip ,   NYC USA   (04.09.08)
Many years in health and love together.
9. # 1 its not difficult to understand
Chaim   (04.09.08)
A young impressionable girl who is far away from home, and who will inherit millions of dollars, was taken advantage of.
10. There are nearly 300 talkbacks
Not surprised   (04.09.08)
to the original article in Hebrew!!!! My opinion is that that's waht you get when you send your children here as if they were a bundle of laundry. if you can't or dont want to live here, then dont send your children here to be here alone without their parents.
11. Fairy tales
Shalom   (04.09.08)
No Rabbonim signed anything. Did anyone actually see them sign it? Anyone can go round with a loudspeaker on his car. So the bride's family are trouble-makers. So what?
12. Oh for the love of Moses...
Matan ,   Tel Aviv   (04.09.08)
...for the love of all that is good and holy I can't tell if I'm dreaming when I read the news these day...this takes psychosis to new levels...get a life people, and to the happy couple: Kol Hakavod!
13. waste
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (04.09.08)
wasted time and space on trying again to discredit the Hareidi society by showing a side of life that NO ONE outside the chareidi world can understand because honoring ones father and mother has almost NO relevence in the world at large. and this is a sad story of someone who obviously never had the love from her parents and therefore sought it in another venue.
14. My big fat Jewish wedding
Simon ,   TA Israel   (04.09.08)
This is hilarious i must say, it really is a different world. They should make it in to a movie , the rest of the world would fall about laughing. Where else do they have vilolent demonstrators outside a wedding? Heres the plot so far: So this young girl flashes her ankle, falls in love , he shows her the size of his siddur, they get married, goes off makes chicken soup, has 12 kids, he lives off the state benefit, dosent go serve in the army and they all lived happily ever after. ahhhhh blesss
15. "When you're Hasid, You're Hasid all the way...
(04.09.08)
..From your first cigarette To you're last dying day. When you're Hasid, If the spit hits the goy, You got achim around, You're a family boy!"
16. Protestor's signs look like leftovers from the Gay Parade
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (04.09.08)
Do people have absolutely nothing better to do than stand in front of a wedding hall and protest a marriage?...come on! where were these clowns when the Disengagement was brought upon us? These people are either getting paid good money to go hold up signs or are seriously mentally ill.
17. What will happen next? The rich parents will likelydisinherit
Rivkah   (04.09.08)
their daughter and the groom will probably say the bride was unclean in some way so he can get a religious divorce (get). If the parents do not disinherit the daughter, the groom will take the parents for all he can get out of them and then dump their daughter. I have seen the daughters of rich Jews misused by males with an eye on the haples girl's parents' position or fortune. Let me give you an example from Tucson, Arizona, in the 1960's. A wealthy Jewish physician was preyed upon by a Catholic Mexican named Ernie Gradillas who wanted to go to medical school and needed someone to pay for it. So he turned his charms toward Harriet Bernstein (Tucson High School class of 1966). They married as teenagers and Harriet's physician father paid the bills for the couple so Ernie could go to college and medical school. Ernie became an orthopedic surgeon and then DUMPED HARRIET. They divorced, but then I believe that was the plan all along since Harriet was not a pretty girl and all she had was her father's wealth and position to attact a husband. The parents of this bride should at least be thankful that it was a Jewish husband and not a Roman Catholic Mexican. There is a bright side to every tragedy in life.
18. 4 reason: My aunt and uncle tried sending their daughter to
Rivkah   (04.09.08)
Britain for caligraphy school and she was corrupted there and became a lesbian. Sending this daughter to Israel was better. Better to have a son-in-law than a lesbo eyeing their fortune.
19. Kol Hakavod
Solly Kopman   (04.09.08)
Mazel Tov on the young couple. Wish them lots of luck and happiness.
20. POOR V RICH ALL NONSENSE,- WHEN THE BABY COMES EVERYBODY ...
(04.09.08)
FORGETS POOR V RICH. THE GRANDS CHILDREN MAKES EVERONE SURRENDER :-)))))) I KNOW ONE CASE A POOR BOY JEW FROM TURKEY MARRYING A RICH GIRL. WE MADE THE BOY RICH AND HAPPY HAPPAY HAPPY :-)))))) NOW TWO GRANDCHILDREN ALREADY - ALL STAYING IN LONDON WORKING WITH THE BBC :)
21. Love conquers all!
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (04.09.08)
Although there weren't fortunes involved, and my parents being dead, my legal guardian, too, objected to my marrying "some no-count cowboy" from a place nobody had ever heard of, whose parents - OMG, typical American trash - were divorced and who belonged to some strange religion, to boot; strange being anything other than Judaism and/or Catholicism, as if that weren't some convoluted mixture right there. So, being only 19 and the age of majority being 21, I went to court to have myself declared of age. That proceeded nicely until "religion" and "mixed marriage" got into the way. Well, by that time, I was bound and determined and I, no longer believing in any religion, being muleheaded and to aggravate the hell out of my guardian, purported to adopt the "no-count cowboy's" religion. (I never did figure out exactly what that was, but that's another story.) That did it!! The court declared me of age, confirmed in writing - duely translated from German to English, certified and notarized in triplicate - that I could marry whomever I wished, subsequent to which I did just that, was disowned, and most of my family didn't speak to me for 30 years. Was it worth it and would I do it again?: You betcha! So, in the spirit of all "cowboys" by whatever name, I wish the happy couple all of God's blessings and may there never be any less love in their lives than they have for each other right now! Don't worry about your families. Sooner or later, they'll come around. Now go ye forth and multiply or at least have a good time trying!
22. Lashon haRa against the groom?
Scott ,   San Diego, CA   (04.09.08)
Sounds to me like if the parents are calling the groom a no-goodnik shababnik, this not bordering on -- if not actual -- lashon hara? Careful dad. One discovers that the punishment for this is tzaraas. I am sorry that I read this; it takes a listener to complete what the gossiper has started. Perhaps he did fail at study; perhaps he will grow to be accomplished as you. Or simply, just a good father and husband. Pops, you are being taught a lesson in life. Accustomed as you are to power and having your way, you must have thought that money could have bought your will on this. It doesn't work that way. You want whats best for her, indeed? Accept it. It is her life. You gave it to her. Let her live it.
23. Mazel Tov!
Hanny S ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (04.09.08)
"... Sometimes, if love proves real, two people who are meant to be together, nothing can keep them apart." - From "The Crow"
24. #6 Rabbis speaking out against child abuse
Aviva ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (04.09.08)
Of course the rabbis are speaking out against child abuse but none of it is being reported on YNet, which is interested in publishing only stories that are defaming of the Haredim. Chief Rabbi Metzger spoke out strongly against the child abusers, and the head of the Canadian Jewish Congress urged all Jews to be on the lookout for the fugitive. This has been reported on all the Haredi media but of course not on YNet.
25. "Religious" Crooks. Ganavim
Pinchas Pupik ,   Baltimore   (04.09.08)
I have very little respect for these "religious" nutters. They are are a disgrace for society and make jews look bad. It is obvious that the system is corrupt. Beating and abusing children. What jerks.
26. NON STORY!!!!
YNET becoming BSnet   (04.09.08)
Does the article mention the name of the Rabbi/s? Of course NOT! You know why? Because there are none! Some PUTZ for monetary reasons made a BROUHAHA, probably to satisfy the father of the bride. The bride is definitely one of those rebellious kids, however NO TRUE RABBI will sign against Halacha wedding, you won’t find one!!!!! If YNET would have had one it would have been written all over. 5 idiots protesting and YNET makes a whole story of it, crazy! I guess that’s the best they can do on a chareidi family (SHABABNICS). YNET go to Tel Aviv and report on HOW CHILDREN REGARD THEIR PARENTS?" There will be too much to write.......................
27. At Least It Wasn't A Concert...
A Yid ,   USA   (04.09.08)
Since (hey, get your priorities in order), it wasn't something as important as chas vi'shalom a concert, the reaction appears to be more muted? Then you would have seen ALL the gedolim sign on, all the tipshim follow, to protest something *really* disgusting. Just curious, if he wasn't a millionaire "philanthropist", would there have been such a response?
28. TO # 20 I COULDNT SAY IT BETTER MY SELF
Sam ,   Brooklyn, NY   (04.09.08)
All the marriages I know that happened against the parents will. As soon as a grandkid comes along every one starts getting along. (even if the rabbi says disown him/her)
29. I am sure the girl was just as good as the guy
Why do rich people ,   the they are perfect   (04.09.08)
please if this tzadaikas was so incessant she would have looked the other way every time a boy said hello to her. some people need to realize their kids are not angles, even if they have a lot of money
30. Wedding
Mother ,   Israel   (04.09.08)
If the boy is a real bum, than I can understand the girl's parents protesting.Maybe this is the real reason. We don't have enough details to judge.
