31. How about we revoke the rabbi's citizenship instead?

This is a lose lose lose proposal. The Jews of Israel lose the privileges that go to those who reside there, pay their taxes, and are liable for military duty. The non-Jewish residents lose the privilege of citizenship, to which they are justly entitled. The diaspora Jews lose because their loyalties will be called into the questions in the lands in which they reside. I am a diaspora Jew who says thanks but no thanks. Now if the rebbe wants to discuss the idea of world citizenship for all members of humanity that is a real question that could provide some real answers to conflict and war. In the U.S. more Jews are universalists than particularists. Waving the flag is not what most of us are about. We have much in common with the citizens of the E.U. who are becoming post- nationalist and post-religious.
34. Citizenship to All Jews - Conversions
Avi   (04.29.08)
Sure, I'm for the idea. But there should should be a difference between those who are actually there, and those who arent't. I think it quite fair that they have all benefits except financial ones. It could be useful to have those in the Galut who care enough to get the citizenship to be able to vote on nationwide issues and office. I have looked at the conversion site, as there would be quite a few of them. My impression is that it should be something more pragmatic. Let's face it, we are striving to make converts into knowledgeable, loyal, Jews who care about the destiny and direction of Am Yisrael. We're not trying to train them for Semicha. No mother would teach their children the values and ways in the manner that is currently being done. The way it's done with a lot more warmth and a sense of humor.

Count Dracula ,   Los Angeles USA   (04.29.08)
Most countries have recirprocity agreements such as we accept your drivers license if you will accept ours. This is a good idea from the Rabbi. When Israel accepts only Jews, then the USA and any other country so inclined can accept only Christians or any other designated group. This will surely cause most Jews to return to Israel when they are "tossed out" of their present country. Good thinking Rabbi. With thoughts like this one, Israel is truly destined to become a light unto others.
36. And what about Jews who undermine the democratic nature...
Aharon   (04.29.08)
What about Jews - like yourself - who undermine the democratic character of the state? And further, what about the hundreds of thousands of Haredim who don't recognize the right of the State of Israel to exist? I imagine we will be revoking all their citizenships and cutting the state's funding to them?
37. response to Melamed
Wes Miller ,   Brainerd MN USA   (04.29.08)
Arabs are not Gentiles. Gentiles are Ephraim, brothers in the hand of the son of man. (See it in Ez 37) shalom.
38. A sick society
jamie ,   York, England   (04.29.08)
In Britian Enoch Powell MP was sacked for making racist remarks. 40 years later we are still talking about it. But in Israel prominent people can demand racist citizenship laws, and ethnic cleansing, and there are no riots in the streets, no questions in the Knesset and nobody loses their job. A sick society
39. Consider his proposal
Alex ,   Miami, FL USA   (04.29.08)
Okay, he's making a distinction between Jews (citizens), Jews liviing in Israel (now called Israelis), and non-Jews living in Israels (Israeli Arabs and others). It's a reorientation of thinking. A "Ger Toshav" would have rights and responsibilities, a foreign dwelling Jew would have others, and a Jew in Israel would have a different list. Perhaps all Jews would have the right to do business in Israel (open a Shekel denominated account), as would resident Jews and resident Gentiles. Resident Jews would have the responsibility of IDF service and benefits that go with it. Non-resident Jews that volunteer for IDF server get the benefits that go with it (based on the reality that non-resident Jews can't be compelled to be drafted). Gentile residents could have related rights/privileges. For example, you could split the government into two houses.... a lower house that governs financial matters could be elected by all... and a upper house that handles "everything else" elected only by the Jews. An independent executive (serving until a rightful King can be chosen, of course, to give it Torah legitimacy) could in some ways be accountable to both. You could give non-Jews "the vote" so they aren't taxed without representation, without letting them vote to make the state not Jewish. Combine that with a Sanhedrin that would govern Jewish status and Jewish law issues, under the auspices of the Israeli state, and you have a platform for unifying the people in a Jewish state, where the resident gentiles are respected parts of society without controlling it.

Enoch Powell was a government minister. This Rabbi is the equivalent of a local bishop. Who cares what he says? Mainly you, apparently. Why is that?
41. Not a bad idea at all

right with Logic TOO much difficult for conversion abroad , especially in France we lost thousands people of am israel each year , only to conserve the religious people "pure"! bad point of vieuw
43. Secular Israel
Roger Gantner ,   Eureka, United State   (05.01.08)
As a secular Jew I am becoming more and more distressed at the control that the religious have in Israel. It is time to have Israel become the homeland for ALL Jews. It is time for Israel to remove the controls that the religious have on our country, the controls that will strangle and destroy Israel before it is all over. The Arabs are not our greatest danger, it is the religious.
