31. Thousands of conversions? so what's today rate?
observer   (05.02.08)
32. #19 They are not reform or conservative Rabbis
Aharon   (05.02.08)
These are national-religious rabbis (Orthodox), whose conversions are being overruled by Haredi Rabbis.
33. Absurd. Sidney may be right.
Outraged ,   New York, USA   (05.02.08)
Wow. I am very troubled. I am more troubled by the day. I used to believe that the Mesorah of Judaism, while meeting rough and rocky patches, was basically passed down by honest and compassionate men, both concerned with din (strict law) and Hesed (loving kindness). I used to believe that the more extreme statements made by current "gedolim" (like blaming katrina on supporting the withdrawal or supporting metzitza b'peh without a pipette) were the exceptions. The more I hear from the supposed "gedolim", the more disgusted I become and the more I realize that Torah is in true danger not from the modernists but from Haredi domination. But now I am totally lost. If sweeping halakhic statements impacting Jews all over the world (and not just thousands in Israel. It goes beyond them) can be made and are more or less accepted, what does that say about our Mesorah. If we could have a break like we have today where corrupt men absurdly deny the reality around them, ignore clear foundations in our tradition for alternative answers (just read the Rambam on geirus for crying out loud. He clearly writes, based on the midrash of Shlomo's wives who were converted despite maintaining their idolatrous ways, that, retroactively, we still accept their conversions! It isn't even so mashma from the Shulchan Aruch that he rejects the rambam considering the language he quotes.) what does that say about past generations? Did they also have these problems? If so, how can we accept the validity of the Mesorah. Open letter to the establishment: Thank you to the Rabbanut and the Haredi leadership in general (not the individual haredim many of whom are inspiring to me) for pointing out to me that, at most, Conservative Judaism is more accurate than Orthodoxy. Human beings, including the ba'alei mesora, can be petty, ignorant and driven by political aims that corrupt the tradition and therefore we must look towards alternative understandings. Either the mesora is bull or it develops and changes and isn't always ethical. If I believed in it, I would fear that you all now deserve misah b'y'dei shamayim for creating chillulei hashem left and right. Thank you for breaking my heart.
34. It's obvious: This Haredi Court Hates Converts
Abe Froman ,   NY, NY   (05.02.08)
There is no other explanation for the court adding the born-jewish husband to the list of forbidden marriage partners, other than this court's blind hatred of converts, and anyone associated with converts. A true Chillul Hashem.
35. #3 Daniel Breslauer
Jonathan Wortman ,   Raanana, Israel   (05.03.08)
Daniel: and do you know the rules of Lashon haRa? Why are you so certain about this Rabi failures? Have you read any writings of Rambam regarding conversions? Check in English or Hebrew versions the journal "Tradition" on Conversions issue. Only very orthodox Rabbis write there. Make your own self an Halachic idea instead of listening to your charedi Rabi. What they have done in this case with that family is even antisemitic.
36. #34 Specifically, the court hates NATIONAL RELIGIOUS convert
Aharon   (05.03.08)
Haredim look down on national religious Jews as though they were only second class in their observance of mitzvot and Torah. We have here a situation where anti-Zionist rabbis, empowered by the state, are negating the decisions of Zionist rabbis - and to me, in a Zionist state, this is simply unacceptable. Haredim should be shunned from the state's institutions, which they do not even recognize as legitimate, and religious Zionists (both Hardal and Kippot Srugot) should be put in their place.
37. Whaddabout the "missing years"??
EGW ,   vancouver canada   (05.03.08)
I'd like to know WHY, if the woman converted over 15 years ago, that Druckman's conversions are reversed ONLY from 6 years ago. It looks as if any children born in the earlier 7 years (perhaps them all) would mnot be included in this prohibition from being Jewish.
38. Nick Sporek, you said everything I meant to
INCognito ,   Brooklyn, USA   (05.03.08)
(other than me not being a convert).
39. #37
INCognito ,   Brooklyn, USA   (05.03.08)
The court ruled that the woman is not Jewish. Her kids, consequently, are not Jewish either. What happened now is that her appeal to the highest Israeli religious Jewish court was denied. Don't worry, they still just ruled that about 9000 conversions are invalid.
40. SELF-designated judges have NO AUTHORITY
David P. ,   sf, usa   (05.03.08)
the opinions of these folks who aspire to finite roles of judge and jury of who's conversion is Jewish enough has no validity. strict rituals in the Torah lay out the only path needed to convert, it is the word of Hashem and the only one that matters. self appointed scholarly rabbi's can only commentate as they are confined by knowing only what they know, and are far from being the ALL KNOWING. I'm no convert, my Jewish lineage can be traced back 2 centuries, but my heritage tells me it can be traced back 55 centuries. I have no finite evidence to support where I actually came from and can only assume it. Therefore drawing conclusions based on a few centuries of evidence can hardly be labeled a fact, rather an opinion, which is exactly what these rabbi's arguments amount to.
41. conversions & Torah
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot, Isreal   (05.03.08)
FYI there is place in the Torah that mentionns conversions in any manor or form. In ancient times if your father was jewish you were jewish. The mother being the one who gives you jewishness came in the time of the Roman conquest. So perhaps it would be better if you learned a bit of history. By the way as some one said the Rabbis are only human, I think.
42. MOST IMPORTANT TO READ...
Simply Jewish ,   Yesha Israel   (05.03.08)
OUR TORAH SAYS THERE IS ONE LAW FOR JEWS AND CONVERTS ALIKE. THEREFORE, IF YOU SAY CONVERTS CAN BE DISQUALIFIED FROM JUDAISM FOR NOT STRICTLY FOLLOWING ALL THE LAWS...WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE THE MILLIONS OF JEWS IN THE WORLD EVEN FAR LESS OBSERVANT? AS MUCH AS I SUPPORT THE STRICTLY OBSERVANT PATH, THIS SMACKS OF THE KIND OF ABUSE PRACTISED DURING THE SPANISH INQUISITION.
43. #40, well said, thought provoking
lauren ,   boston, usa   (05.03.08)
44. By definition Jews are therefore idoloters
David ,   Israel   (05.03.08)
If a Jew is defined by mitzvot of men, rather then the Torah, therefore any convert that is judged based on mitzvot of men is really an idoloter, thus not a Jew anyway. Any Jew who negates Torah for mitzvot of men are technically not Jews either by rabbinical definition. Erev Rav has been very successful in highjacking the Torah, and replacing it with another form that is NOT derech haShem. G-d help us.
45. I know someone who is doing this conversion
L ,   TA   (05.04.08)
I know someone who is doing this conversion, and they are at the end of the 10 months of studies, and have been living an Orthodox lifestyle for over 6 months now and wants to marry once the conversion is over - Now what?
46. As a Rabbi Moishe Rosen convert
Yaakov Sullivan ,   NYC   (05.04.08)
I can only protest. This is shameful to be rejected just because you believe in Jesus the messiah. Even id you believe in all 487 commandments for gentile it is still possible according to Rabbi Moishe Rosen.
47. What are you all getting so heated about about?
Yisraeli   (05.05.08)
Ermm may I remind you this is Ynet. If you dont find your few usual anti charedi tripe then its not Ynet. You believe everything thats said here? Dont you think some parts are being left out? I usually take the usual anti charedi article and dip it in marror then mix it with some charoset and dont worry or care what the article says. I know its biased, dont you?
48. #22 Nick
danny ,   telaviv   (05.08.08)
don't listen to these numnuts! who cares what they say... and who needs a "certificate" that says your jewish either?! being jewish is in your heart only :-) don't worry, you're one of us! :-) cheers
49. Re: Annulment of Jewish children's identity
Sarah ,   Toronto, Canada   (05.21.09)
There will be action against your rulings, there is consequences of equal proportions to everything in life and YOU my friend are not NULL and VOID of such rulings either. May your calculating and mischevious dealings fall flat on its face, and your actions, and may you finally one day see that your actions are comparable to that of the Holocaust. You are breaking the bonds on which Judaism is built to that equal of the catholic church. Unaccepting willing human's into the secret society ( so to say ) of Judaism and to turn innocent children away is a sin and you should feel much guilt. May G-d have mercy on your soul! Mazel Tov to you and yours! NOT
50. Ruth is a goya
Aaron   (05.23.09)
I think she was insincere.
51. What about Torah and Talmud?
Scott Edelman ,   New Jersey   (12.21.09)
Were the erev rav's conversions annuled? Were Solomon's wives' conversions annulled? Never heard of a conversion that was annulled until the leaders of this generation decided it was possible. "It is brought down from the Baal Shem Tov and his disciples that before the coming of Mashiach most of the leaders and the heads of the Community are from the Mixed Multitude. As is brought in the Zohar in the portion of Bereshis (p. 113). And most of the leaders of the generation are the Mixed Multitude. Thus, every Jew should fear for himself so that he doesn't become part of them" "He is not, however, to be persuaded, or dissuaded too much,....If he accepted, he is circumcised forthwith. What is the reason? The performance of a commandment must not in any way be delayed." Yevamos 47 B for those who don't remember.
52. conversions
a ash ,   nyc ny   (02.08.10)
By making conversions retoactiveilly Nullified we are showing judaism as ready to go back to the dark ages. Since when do the anti zionists , not poroductive people who do not recognize nor accept our country have a say in what was a major improvement and made So many families observant. No we are throwing them out sahme oin us.
53. de-conversion
Yael the Convert ,   Israel   (03.13.10)
Can I "request" deconversion on the basis that my ex-husbands mother engineered the whole thing to get blond Jewish grandchildren and then move my divorce from the rabbinical court (who anyway rule against me as a "christian") to the civil court? Please advise!!!!
