The police and Mazuz wanted to take Olmert by surprise and not allow further suspected collusion which is why the whole thing was thankfully kept quiet.
My first reactions to Pines a couple of years ago were that he was a naive and out of his depth and I later felt that perhaps he had a future.
Now I see that my first feelings were correct.
What is more important however is that Olmert gets replaced asap.
