1. I dont know about you guys but lots women in pants look like
Al   (05.02.08)
hell. Reminds me of a story. I was in LAX waiting to return to Montreal where I saw this young couple with 2 little girls. They were Hebrew speakers and the "mother" was dressed in low cut jeans with her wazoo showing for all the world. The guy was your "Gee why the hell am I here, and who the hell is this women sitting near me?" kinda guy. The two little girls were sweet as punch in their nice mid length skirts and buttoned uo (Remember this being LA in July) shirts. Lesson to all you ladies out there. Get a clue and cover up. Its much more cool.
2. #1, Hey Al, you get a clue
Jake   (05.02.08)
If you want to tell people how to dress, you should either become a boarding school headmaster, or move to Tora Bora.
3. Now they're legislating pyjama bottoms?
D ,   Canada   (05.02.08)
Kudos to Rabbi Rosen for having the courage to speak up against those who are trying to get women into the burka. The rabbis, so afraid of women's progress, are passing more and more ridiculously stringent rules against women. And then the haredi movement starts to cry about the growing shidduch crisis. They invented it with all these stringencies and stipulations! No wonder singles (and their families) today are too afraid to commit. Who could ever meet rabbinic standards like these? It's time these guys realized that they're hopelessly stuck in the dark ages and their desire to take over everything from politics to medicine to social interactions through "halakha" is destroying Judaism.
4. Women in pants look hot!!!!
Willy ,   Israel   (05.02.08)
dress like you want, girls. And if you did it only to me it would already be enough! don't listen to those ayatollahs out of the middle-ages or to Al that fool!
5. Rabbi says women must not wear pants
Roxy ,   Israel   (05.02.08)
Sorry Rabbi but in the days when the Torah was written men wore long robes that looked like dresses. just like the women wore and noone said anything about it then. GD doesn't care what kind of clothes you wear he cares about what is in your heart and on your mind!
6. The chutzpa of the Rabbi ...
Ruth Rasnic ,   Herzkiya, Israel   (05.02.08)
Women who prefer wearing pants are neither modest or the reverse. Men who wear old fashioned clothes and long earlocks are neither modest or the reverse. Okease don't lecture to women about our dress code and we will refrain fromdoing the same to you. Incidentally, many men with large paunches look as though they are in the 8th month and bearing twins... Women choose to wear pants because they are comfortable.
7. Rabbis and Pants
Mike ,   USA   (05.02.08)
The real question is whether YOUR "RABBI" is wearing his pants when he is talking to YOUR wife??? As someone whose wife ran off with the family rebbe, I can tell you these ayatollahs of Judaism are very sick puppies. Deep down most of them are fearful that someone else is having a lot more fun than they are. The rest of the blah...blah....blah....modesty remarks are just a bunch of chin music!
8. Wow, army girl recruit in short skirt on a ladder
(05.02.08)
9. Is there a law in Israel that sets a maximum IQ for rabbis?
Sidney ,   USA   (05.02.08)
There is an outrage a day from these clowns.
10. What about women in nudist colonies?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (05.02.08)
Perhaps the "rabbi" should shut his mouth. Or should we talk about modestly dressed men and women draft dodgers? Or religious thieves and child molester/beaters?
11. It is socially acceptable for most women to wear slacks.
Rivkah   (05.02.08)
Forbes Magazine had a survey years ago that found forty per cent of the women in America do not own a skirt or a dress. My grandmother was in her late seventies before she bought a pair of slacks after much ridicule from my mother about wearing skirts and dresses. It is true, the Bible says it is an abomination to the Lord for a woman to wear that which pertains to a man and vice versa. But are slacks a garment that signifies a male exclusively in the context of the caution in the Bible? A particular kind of slacks would be male, as described in the last chapter of Proverbs. Men are warned not to give their strength to women. The word strength in that verse means army, defenses, fortifications. So military attire is a man's garment. Regular slacks and jeans are not exclusively a man's attire. So the women in the IDF should not wear garments similar to men in the IDF as they do now. If the IDF women wear slacks, they should not be the IDF mustard-green color. That needs to be changed. Women in the IDF should have separately identifiable garments that do not look like the males IDF garments.
12. These rabbis may yet save Olmert's sinking ship
Jake   (05.03.08)
While all the other passengers are leaving Olmert's sinking vessel on life rafts to save their hides, Olmert, ever the master of political survival, may see an opportunity to pull a fast one and remain in office. He will get these rabbis to form an alignment and join his government, under the following coalition agreement: "Sorry, rabbis, I cannot promise that Jerusalem will remain the undivided capital of Israel. Indeed, the territorial compromises may well strip Israel bare. But as for our women, I promise you this: The Burqa is the dress for every Jewess." Come on, folks, you forgot what's it all about. Stop harrassing women. And stop being complicit in the denuding of Eretz Israel, which is the real scandalous source of immodesty.
13. Rivkah...
Matan ,   Tel Aviv   (05.03.08)
...every time, when I think that comments can't possibly get farther out there than they already are...here you are...something static in my day, as sure as the rising sun.
14. Issues with sexuality?
hi   (05.03.08)
When God created man and woman they were nude. Babies are born naked. And women say their blessing in the mikvah starkers. So I don't think God has a problem with nudity or uncovered body parts. Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere - in the people making up their silly laws about modesty and covering the beautiful, natural body.
15. This is silly!
Evan ,   Dallas, USA   (05.03.08)
The Holy One of Israel made Man and Women and set them in the Garden. They were naked until their rebellion. I promise you HaShem is not embarrassed by nakedness. He knows how he made us and it is no surprise to Him what we look like.
16. madness
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (05.03.08)
"Dress modestly when you go to relieve yourself at night"--really, this is insanity. If the Holy One was that concerned about modesty he wouldn't have given us bodily functions. And I thought Aviner was a moderate! Why do Jews have a liability to madness?--insane leftism on one hand, insanely exaggerated piety on the other. Although I get a kick out of it, I actually think extreme female IMmodesty like in Tel Aviv, particularly, is a bad thing too--it creates an "oh hell, we're all really just sensualists" atmosphere and goes against values of fidelity and family. It's cynical. But modesty becomes a joke when those do practice it--turn it into a form of madness. Since we're going to have immodesty anyway, I also look forward to the day when bare midriffs on the street become fashionable again.
17. #11 women's army slacks - different color?
Eitan ,   Israel   (05.03.08)
You know Rivkah, military uniform colour is "mustard green" for a reason. Camouflage it's called, I believe. What color would you suggest for women's army slacks - pink maybe? You don't really want to make our women-soldiers an easy target, do you? Unless it says so in the Bible, of course!
18. i wear what ever i damn well please, thanks for your concern
(05.03.08)
19. #1, why are so many haredi rabbis concerned with clothes?
INCognito ,   Brooklyn kid   (05.03.08)
Are they gays or metrosexuals? What's up with that?
20. The stupid comments of someone who's never held a real job.
David ,   Hartford CT USA   (05.03.08)
This rabbi has way to much time on his hands. Why do men always have problems with women's sexuality? Do women make such stupid pronouncements? It's rabbis like this that will lead orthodoxy into the warped behaviors of Islam's attitude towards women. Orthodox women need to regain control over their lives and bodies and not let men control them. Israel needs a 'Hawaiian Tropic' bikini contest for orthodox women! (There are plenty of HOT orthodox women!)
21. pants and a Rabbi
bar   (05.03.08)
Well said Rabbi , you are only distancing more and more Jews from religion with your comments . Great !!!
22. IT'S TIME THAT WE TELL THE RABBIS WHAT TO WEAR
Shomer Mitsvot   (05.03.08)
'' DIPPERS ''
23. where does it commanded Women must not wear pants?
ygalg   (05.03.08)
the Torah forbids for women to wear men's cloth and vice versa. in those periods, yet pants exist. both wore what look like a robe. thus men wear men's pants and women wear women's pants should be fine from religious POV.
24. Trousers & women in the army
Mona ,   Glasgow, UK   (05.03.08)
When I served in the Israeli army, we used to wear skirts, and trousers were to be worn only in winter time, if we wanted. I don't know the reason behind the complete disappearance of skirts from the girls-soldiers arsenal, but one thing is for sure, wearing trousers makes life much easier for women in general.
25. clothing and kinky mentality
Michael ,   Haifa   (05.03.08)
when Ovadia Yoseph stops cross-dressing in skirts, then women should not wear trousers
26. Women can wear what they choose.
petra ,   usa   (05.03.08)
Men can look in the other direction if they have a problem. Some Rabbis should be silent. They are neither expert in fashion or comfort.( and the same for 'religion') I don't see an 11th commandment telling women "thou shalt not wear pants'. Perhaps Judaism made a grave error by eliminating the Levite priests for some dubious 'Rabbis".
27. hey idiots, the rabbi wasnt talking to you!!!
izzy d   (05.03.08)
all ur comments about ooohh how this rabbi lives in the middle ages and wwwooo he is just like the taliban and pshhh he is so obviously gay. did you stop to consider what the rabbi actually said? in fact in a civilized society the comments i read here are just as contemptible as you find the rabbis. heres a piece of advice IF YOU DONT WANT TO THEN DONT!!!!! nobody is asking you nobody is making you and nobody has a gun to you head andd is forcing you to do anything. so stop reacting as if that were the case and get a life. so far the only insecurity i see is in these talk backs. pathetic. just immature little baby's. boo hooo somebody said something i disagree with,. lets have an EMOTIONAL MELTDOWN.
28. 13 Matan: Only the wise recognize wisdom.
Rivkah   (05.03.08)
God's wisdom appears to be foolishness to those who are not wise.
29. modesty modesty
susan ,   jerusalem   (05.03.08)
and just to extrapolate that theory - in the interest of modesty -a woman must not take down her underwear when she pees in case she might expose her "erva"....
30. the Holy one is everywhere
odles ,   jerusalem idrael   (05.03.08)
so he must be inside the woman's knickers too so what diff if she's wearing trousers or nothing at all.
