1. Cannes Film Festival
NYC Girl   (05.16.08)
It comes as no surprise that an Israeli film that raises the specter of Sabra and Shatilla would be widely acclaimed at Cannes. However, it would be interesting to see how an Israeli film, even one having great artistic merit, that examined Arafat's years-long terror campaign that nearly turned Israel into a slaughterhouse, would be received. Somehow, I suspect it wouldn't get quite the same reception.
2. "I can only hope that any 16-year-old kid watching this film
Hanoch ,   NYC, USA   (05.16.08)
will walk away not wanting to ever fight a war," he added. My, oh my, isn't it profound? You can see how sensitive, how morally tormented... and cool I am, don't you? Yes, I am from Israel but it is not my fault. I am not like those terrible Israelis. I am different and I deserve to be loved and accepted. I am suffering here so, perhaps you could find me a position at some nice progressive European university? Or, just a lecture tour, maybe? I
3. Not fighting wars...
The Doc ,   Haifa, Israel   (05.16.08)
""I can only hope that any 16-year-old kid watching this film will walk away not wanting to ever fight a war," .... REALLY? Not even if a ruthless enemy attacks you, your family and tries to perform genocide on your people? Let's see... Thomas Paine put it this in MUCH better words: "Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. " So "no more war, no more bloodshed" but if one is imposed onto you - like all the wars imposed on Israel since it's independence, you FIGHT until you emerge victorious. A decisive victory will insure "no more war".
4. #1 right on
alan ,   capestraightalaska   (05.16.08)
Of course it would not get the same reception. The market loves self abasing films. Jews are wrong and should be depicted as wrong by the Art ist. Or is it the elit ist. The two get confused sometimes. God forbid that there should ever arise a Leon Uris in Israel, one who has a clear vision of historical events and who sees heroism in Jewish "resistance" to a never ending 60 year war against Jews in the Middle East who are independent, proud, and free.
5. BBC loved it!
La Comparsita ,   London UK   (05.16.08)
I agree 100% with comment 1 above. Of course the BBC loved Folman's film & we were treated to a long item about it on Radio 4 this morning, which made sabra/shatila sound as if it was all Israel's fault. I wish the 16 year old Hamas/Hezbollah supporters also didn't want to fight!
6. Israeli films in general are crap...
Al   (05.16.08)
They are so full of nandy pandy bullshit..you want to vomit. All I can hope for is that these lefty directoirs end up with a good beating at the hands of those who they are dying to love. I couldnt be bothered viewing these trash films.
7. but still no official recognition
observer   (05.17.08)
That animation documentary likened Sabra and Shatilla massacre to the Holocaust. it personifies those really involved; 7 out of 9 characters have their their real name. But, still no official apology!
8. Don't bother to read #6 - his 'subject line says all!
redmiike ,   Tel Aviv, London, LA   (05.17.08)
when people post talkbacks who's subject lines read, "he's a moron", "who cares", 'it's all sh*t" etc you can be sure that there is nothing in the text worth that's worth reading. Why? The poster has told you the conclusion, however biased and unthought out it is and does not invite any kind of discourse. Mike
9. Sabra & Shatile Hezbollah-style.
The Doc ,   Haifa, Israel   (05.17.08)
LOL - yet another demagogy and pathetic rants about Sabra & Shatila "supporters" shooting for sensationalism by equating it to the Holocaust, no less. (Jenin, Jenin sounds familiar? Another "holocaust"? Aren't these Islamo-Leftists getting tired of stealing Jewish suffering and using words they cannot even begin to understand?) Anyway, since Hezbollah exists, it has committed so many "Sabras and Shatillas" that one can lose count. A nice reminder was last week - not soon enough. So while the Islamo-Leftist demagogues moan their worn-out propaganda on false graves, their own "brothers" butcher their own flesh and blood behind their backs. Nice touch! Befitting historical revenge! I do hope that those guilty of Sabra and Shatila are tried - TOGETHER with the Hezbollah murderers!
10. Of course....
Rina ,   Israel   (05.18.08)
Of course, any film that is anti-Israel/anti-Jewish will win awards. Nothing new here.
