1. What a madness!What a madness!
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (05.19.08)
First of all this whole idea of creating a "palestinian state"is a madness per si.There never was a state,a country ,nothing called palestian;they are just arabs who already belong to other arab nations.Israel has been shoting itself in head by allowing such a monster to be created. Rabin & cia(beilin, peres, etc) are the fathers of this newly monster being created. The soon Israel cut this evil and go back in this madness the best will be.Keeping forward in this insanity will only bring the same insanity materialized more and more in the head of all Israel.
2. Of course they need an army. They
Che Vive ,   Ghetto Beach, U.S.A.   (05.19.08)
have to confront the settlers Israel refuses to restrain.
3. traitor olmert will give in on this too
chaim ,   brooklyn n.y   (05.19.08)
4. Chutzpah
moriah ,   sacramento,USA   (05.19.08)
They are accustomed to getting what they want. All they have to do is raise their voice and kill a Jew or two and they get thier prisoners freed, more territory and all kinds of arms and ammunition. Don't forget the armored personnel carriers. They get what they want. Why be ssurprised?
5. Why would they need an army?
andy ,   orlando,u.s   (05.19.08)
6. regular army?
ados ,   Boston, USA   (05.19.08)
A few questions. When will be their state? Who will threaten their . . . state? Do they know that without a submarine fleet they cannot defend their . . . state.
7. They want a regular army to attack the IDF?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (05.19.08)
Are you feeling lucky, punks?
8. The Sum of All Fears
Snir ,   NYC   (05.19.08)
The PA has gone completely mad if they actually believe Israel will allow them a standing army, a standing army that can walk 500 feet and be in Jerusalem. The PA loves to sabatoge their peace talks without outrageous demands. If Israel agrees to this then there is truely something wrong with the government of Israel.
9. Right of Self-Determination
California Bear ,   Berkeley, USA   (05.19.08)
Anyone who has ever read my comments here know that I'm a staunch supporter of the State of Israel and its prosperity. On this point, the State of Israel has completely transcended its rightful bounds. Any sovereign state has the right to self-determination and this means the right to have a regular armed forces as it sees fit for itself. That right is inalienable and is not for any other state to grant or deny. The State of Palestine will be a sovereign entity not subordinate to any other nation. That is the Palestinians right as equal partners in the international arena.
10. I Was Waiting For This
Wisconsin Marshall ,   USA   (05.19.08)
Of course they won't accept demilitarization no matter how much anyone objects. I wouldn't believe it if they agreed. The Arab police force in the West Bank, now being trained under the auspices of the West, will form the core of the new army. This is a repeat of the disasterous Oslo days when the thousands of guns given to the police, and the trained police themselves, attacked Israel during the second intifada. Eventually, the army of the new Palestinian state will rocket Israel and conduct commando raids against it. When Israel responds, as it must, it will be fighting a sovereign state, and the whole world will condemn Israel.
11. They Don't Want a State - They Want Israel
GZLives   (05.19.08)
Duhhh hello earth to Israel - come in Israel.
12. Once more HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Wisdom ,   ProWAR against enemy   (05.19.08)
WE TOLD YOU SO! Israeli fools, keep talking until you talk you way out of the middle east!
13. No problem but generals have to be Israelis.
Asher ,   NY, USA   (05.19.08)
14. Yes, Keep The PA weak
John   (05.19.08)
yes keep the PA territories weak, so Hamas can take it over. Than Israel can reoccupy it and take more land.
15. No such thing as a fair peace deal with Israel
Jacob   (05.19.08)
Their is no point in doing a peace deal with Israel. You will always end up with a bad deal. Israel will make sure that Palestine is weak Economically and Militarily so that they will be able to hold some control over it. Jordan also got a bad deal. They only got 3 % of their own river while Israel got 97%. Their is no such thing as fair peace to Israel. Signing a peace treaty with Israel is the same as surrendering.
16. What is next ?
AlbertoGa ,   Houston, USA   (05.19.08)
How about tanks and why not a N. Bomb. any Palestinian State in any form will be the end of Israel. Slowly they will get it if the Utopians stay in the Israeli Gov. Elections Now are a must.
17. OH HELL NO, TO DEFEND AGAINST WHOM? THEY DON'T NEED ARMY
David P. ,   Santa Cruz, USA   (05.19.08)
they need an ideology that isn't self destructive & a purpose to be something more then a pawn against the islamic global jihad against the zionist which is preached in nearly every mosque in the world
18. Not just "no", but "Hell no!"
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (05.19.08)
Seriously, one should not be surprised by this latest turn. It's not just the potential threat to both Israel and Jordan posed by a militarized Palestine. It's not even what it tells us about the long term intentions of the Palestinians. The fact is many of us have long argued that concessions only encourage increasing demands from the other side. Israel is showing itself weak and indecisive, unsure of what its own interests and "red lines" are. So of course, the Palestinians keep pushing for more, confident that the US and EU will keep the pressure on Israel so as to "sustain the peace process". What's surprising is that Israel's leaders remain so oblivious to the obvious.
19. An army to defend against who?
(05.19.08)
Egypt?
20. They need an army to more effectively kill Jews!
Yonatan ,   Israel   (05.19.08)
Why mince words with radical diaper heads. They don’t want a country, they just don’t want Jews to have a country of their own.
21. Just suppose
herb glatter ,   pittsburgh pa usa   (05.19.08)
the state of palestine is established and they sign a pact with oh let's say the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iran sends in all kinds of armaments what will Israel do? go to the UN? where are the Jews of Israel? what are they waiting for?
22. The writing is on the wall
Watch Tower ,   United States   (05.19.08)
This was something that was supposed to never come up. When the Palis get strong enough they will invade Israel. You count on that!
23. Next trick the P.A will teach it soldiers freeze tag
Observation ,   united States   (05.19.08)
I can't stop laughing, I just made the picture of Palestinian police playing leap frog my screen saver. Israel has nothing to fear, because if they attack Israel it will be with NERF balls and super-soakers. Good luck fighting terror! I guess they will challenge al-aqsa and hamas to a twister tournament.
24. Waste of time
Eyal ,   TLV, Israel   (05.19.08)
They want to undoubtedly all of Israel at the end. Get rid of Hamas and get back Gaza (our land), destroy the PA once and for good and stop wasting your time with these thugs. We have security issues in the south and in the north that are far greater than their demands (PA). The PA will never agree with Israel on anything. We are completely wasting our time with these stupid animals. The time for talks and half measures are over. Protect our country for G-D’s sake.
25. PA Army? Naturally for peaceful purpose
Ray ,   USA   (05.19.08)
Abbas wants not a state ,but a WEAPON to use against Israel. Only fools can fail to see what is going on in Lebanon, Gaza, and theWest Bank. It is all preparation for a final war on Israel. To continue making believe that a Pal State is good for "peace" is STUPID.
26. What did you expect?
Mike ,   Jerusalem   (05.19.08)
Gee Tzipi i guess you suffered a shock, your poor little bird(Tzipora)brain didn't imagine that the peace loving moderate palis would DEMAND an army, . Of course Amm Ehud and Amma Jemima I mean Amma Condoleezza will supply them with the latest weapons to make thir task of destroying us easier. Welcome to reality!
27. nothing to be surprised about
zionist forever   (05.19.08)
It was only a matter of time before they demanded something like this. They can see that all Bush & Olmert are interested in is a legacy before they go. Bush wants something to make up for Iraq Olmert wants somethng to make up for his coruption. Abbas also knows that because of the Hamas rocket attacks from Gaza Israel is desperate to please Abbas if its going to strenghen him and his position. He also knows that the US is likley to get a nice left wing Democrat president who is going to take the side of the palestians to go with this new muslim loving America that doesnt support Israel unconditionaly a hope that it will make Iraq calmer. He knows Olmert will be willing to do anything just do get a deal on paper it doesnt matter if it led to Israels destruction as long as he had his deal on paper he would be happy. Livni is even more left wing than Olmert and as she has never been PM yet there is no dirt to dig up on her so she looks like the perfect PM when in reality she is Olmert in a dress but because of the fact she has no record of coruption & Olmerts done most the dirty work allready its going to be more about just signing on the dotted line with Abbas & Assad not a matter of negotiation. Barak is still the same old Barak that left office 8 years ago desperate to please. Abbas knows this is a once in a lifetime oportunity and all he needs to do is play cool and he will get anything he wants because the other side is so patheticly weak and corupt.
28. Don't waste your time with these people!
Enzo ,   london,uk   (05.19.08)
Ignore them! That's the first step against taqqiya! The second step is to hit them hard! Then, and only then, you sit down and discuss YOUR terms...!
29. Best line in the article ....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (05.19.08)
"Livni, perplexed ......." I'd say that's an accurate description of someone obviously in way over her head. Believing as she does in policies not even vaguely grounded in reality, oblivious to consequences, & in complete denial of all evidence, contact with the reality of who she is negotiating with can indeed be perplexing. To any objective observer, all the evidence clearly indicates the bad intentions of the PA leadership headed by Abbas. Anyone with half a brain can see where this is leading. Once a Palestinian state is formally an independant state, we will have no recourse - any agreements we make can & will be ignored. And there will be nothing we can do about it short of reoccupying what will then be an independant & sovereign state. You can imagine the consequences internationally no matter what the provocation. Livni & the rest of this gov't. are being naive to the point of stupidity.
30. To Abbas "armed struggle" remains an option.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (05.19.08)
It is certainly possible for someone to reform and break from his past, and some former Fatah terrorists have genuinely done so. But that has not been Abbas's course. On the contrary, Abbas has recently bragged about his role in blazing the path of Palestinian terror and about how he and his companions showed the way to others, indeed trained others, including Hezbollah. And he has spoken recently of "armed struggle" being at present counterproductive but a path that might meet his approval in the future. He intimated that the key factor would be an improvement in the Palestinians' ability to conduct a terror war more effectively. As to historical facts : http://xrl.us/bjcgn
