" Robert DeNiro - There is an "urban Jewish legend" that Robert DeNiro has a Jewish mother. The story began 20 years ago when a Jewish columnist said so in a Jewish newspaper piece and book. Neither one of Robert De Niro's parents were Jewish (his late father was a born a Catholic; his late mother, Protestant. Neither practiced). Most full scale biographies of De Niro state the correct facts. To make a long story short, to get to the bottom of this urban Jewish legend we communicated with the columnist who started this story about DeNiro. He told us he regrets printing this misinformation and finally met DeNiro in 2001. DeNiro confirmed, in response to a direct question, that he is not Jewish--nor was his mother. A reporter for the Washington Post repeated this howler about DeNiro in a story on Adam Sandler published at the end of November. He interviewed the editor of this site, but went off and added the DeNiro misinformation to his story all by himself. DeNiro grew up, by the way, in Greenwich Village. Both his parents were painters. The milieu he grew up in--from the NY art world--to his neighborhood--to the world of the NY theater where he started--is heavily Jewish. Given his incredible talent and personal background---he can give a "dead-on" performance as a Jewish character without any difficulty. "
