Yes ,of course ,under the US/ French brokered ceasefire which came to the rescue of Hizbollah just before the IDF could finally defeat them Hizbollah is weaker under the vaunted UN 's watchful blind eye. YES,of course and cows fly and get 100 miles to the gallon. When the truth looks grim under their failed agenda,it's time to get out the empire spinmeisters and court jesters to paint a bright picture where there is none. It';s time to peddle the laced Kool-Aid for the peons to drink and sing eat drink and be merry ,all is well under the rule of clowns and failed, corrupt, political despots.

Enzo ,   london,uk   (05.22.08)
In diplomatic terms it means that Israel cannot rely on these two supposed "friends". Obviously neither the US nor the UK give a s*** about the power acquired by Hizbullah in Lebanon! This is bad news for Israel.
4. US, UK say Hizbullah weaker

I hear this thing called Rice speak ,i throw up..i mean how can she think anyone with an IQ of 45 will beleive her? if the Hez are REALLY weak ,why in god's name did the USA ,France and the rest of the gang allowed them to get exactly what they asked for to the letter 18 months ago prior to their civil disobedience and paralysis of cry baby sanioras goverment?IF they had become weaker, then on the contrary it should have been the time to neutralize them internally..but as usual, same old BS from a lost cause, save face as much as possible and move on to other lies..
9. Spin, anyone?
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (05.22.08)
Another foreign policy disaster for Condi Rice. Who does she think she's kidding? But, I fear worse - she may actually believe her own BS. This lady is unable to face her own mistakes. It is well known that she isolates herself from opinions not her own & ignores inconvenient facts. Sounds a lot like some of our politicians, wouldn't you say?
10. And people say we don't have a drug problem

In the U.S. we have a thing called affirmative action; it allows for social promotion of certain minorities that have been historically ill treated as a means of correcting the previous racist system. Overall it's a great program that has brought talented people into fields they were otherwise excluded from due to ethnic discrimination. Unfortunately, it has also allowed a very small percentage of incompetent people to receive positions far above their ability, such as Ms. Rice.
11. Hizbo Indeed Emerged Weaker
Walid ,   Riyadh   (05.23.08)
First, most of the guys who sent their talkbacks are either foreigners who only know about what happened from the media. The rest are Hizbo sympathizers. Second, I'm Lebanese, currently, living in Saudi, but always kept my contacts in Lebanon and have, on hand experience and knowledge of Lebanese affairs. Hizbo's goal, over the last couple of weeks, was to take over thje country by executing a coup. It worked well in Beirut since they faced no resistance especially from Beiruti Sunnis who are docile. When they turned their guns on the Druze they were pushed back fiercely and they lost in a few hours some 130 KIA . Their goal was to occupy parts of Mount Lebanon and secure the road between Bekaa, Beirut and the South, thus connecting the Shiite areas. Then, they would have ousted PM Siniora, appointed Michel Aoun as a puppet president and took over the country. This didn't happen,; Hizbo took a hell of a beating, it's image as being invincible was shaken (images of Hizbo fighters being mauled and beaten to death are circulating on cell phones,) Sunnis are feuding and preparing to settle scores, Christians look fwd to arming and defending themselves, Druze are united and armed. Now, Hizbo ended up with being denied access to areas it had had when they claimed that their arms will be used to resist Israel. Their allies are weaker especially Mr. Aoun, who lost his Christian popularity, and last but not least they were forced to elect a new president. Though this president might be pro-Syrian, but he's not pro-Iranian and will be more than happy to confront Hizbo when Syria finalizes its deal with the US or Israel. So what do you think? Did it emrge weaker or stronger?
12. TWISTS AND TURNS
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (05.23.08)
Based on various statements from different dignitaries,it looks more like that Hizbullah did, after all portrayed itself as a very strong resistance body.If you look at these statements emanating from here and there, one feels surprised that Hizbullahs managed to get what they wanted by virtue of having to take up arms to protect the survellance equipment at the airport and the exclusive communication system thatbecame what some called 'security risk'.In the process of protecting these 2 important things,Hizbullah's landed up getting proper representation with veto power and no one dared to talk about disarming them.So do we agree to observe this as their victory or defeat?Stressing all the time on writing that the Hizbullah's pointed their weapons against their own people is a far fetched statement if one were to believe that the whole episode in Lebanon recently was planned, organised and supposed to be implemented by certain vested interest in the region.Hizbullah's power and rapid reaction was never envisaged by these vested interest group. When the whole plan back-fired all of a sudden attention is diverted to what Hizbullahs achieved or lost..................I dont understand this at all.Or shall we say that whoever was involved in trying to deprive Hizbullahs of their exclusive communication system and the survellance at the airport handed Hizbullah more than they themselves had expected? If so, how can we surmise that the resistance group has become weaker.Logic defies it?
13. What a JOKE
Richard ,   USA   (05.23.08)
How is getting control of the Lebanese government a loss? At least in the next war, Israel can treat the enemy as all of Lebanon and not just some groups in Lebanon. If the people of Lebanon are too weak or stupid or sympathetic to take back their country they deserve what they get.
14. To Walid
Ali ,   Lebanon   (05.23.08)
hahaha ur post makes me laugh..Sayed Hassan said that if want a coup, ur leaders would wake up the next day in the sea or in jails. All what u postd is lies. If Hezbollah wanted to take over mount lebanon than ur contacts would not even had the chance to tell u those lies hahaha...Tell me Why did Jounblat ur leader who was under the mercy of Hezbollah ask Arslan to beg Hezbollah not to extend the fighting to the Mount after his fighters kidnapped and killed 3 Hezbollah supporters. Why did he give all the arms to the army..If we want to take over Lebanon we can...Habiby Welcome to the New Era of Lebanon, an era where the Lebanese Resistane together with Generla Aoun ( the leaders of the Christians) lead together Lebanon, I can tell that we lost becoz we got the veto power, a pro syrian president and a new voting law hahahahaha loser!!!!!!!!!!!!
15. #12
(05.23.08)
mahmood, i suggest you read post #11, a post written very intelligently and accurately about the hizbullah standing in lebanon as we speak. post #11 is right on the mark. hizbullah didn't win. it lost a lot more than it hoped to win. you are dreaming. we lebanese know what is going on. i am from beirut and i tell you that post #11 is right on target here. i was there when it hazppened and i followed everything. nasrallah is hated now, less popular, less forceful than before and his total bogus message that he is protecting lebanon is a sham and was found to be a total lie. some may think that they have won, but despised is more like it. also, it won't take israel much to win against this hizbullah group if the world gives it full reign to do so. we lebanese are not israel's enemy. tghe enemy of our country is hizbullah.

tarzan   (05.23.08)
Cool with some info from someone that seems to know But the nr 130 KIA is that an official nr.???? We hear about 80 dead, but Hizbo never publish their death toll as we saw in the last war with Israel. Makes them look stronger
17. You have a point, Walid
Millie ,   Israel   (05.23.08)
I read about the Druse push against the Hizbos. The Hizbos killed some Druse fighters with horrible cruelty and the Druse acted bravely to stop them. The Sunnis are split into pro-Syrian (and pro-Hizbo) and anti-Syrian factions. If the Druse can team up with anti-Syrian Sunnis and organize their own resistance, they have a chance to hold off the Hizbos and weaken them. The problem is that the Lebanese Army is heavily infiltrated by Shiites, and that is a major obstacle.
18. thx 11, Walid, & no, I don't think they emerged stronger.
Jewish dude ,   Israel   (05.23.08)
good insight!
19. [Hezbollah] turns its guns on its OWN People?
Norma Fares   (05.23.08)
"What it is, is a militia that, given an opportunity, decided to turn its guns on its own people", Rice said. I do agree on almost everything said about the unaccepbale show of Hezbollah...except "turn its guns on its OWN people". Who is this "own people"? People of Hezbollah? Are the People of Lebanon become the people of Hezbollah? If so, I , as one of the people of Lebanon stricly reject this statement-expression. If not meant so , superpower's Rulers i.e. US Secretary Foreign Affairs (in that case), must be accurate in choosing the right words in the right place. We are the people of Lebanon, the unique multicultural country amid its Arab environment...to stay. Period. And we smile for a genuine Peace!
20. HEZBOLLAH WEAKENED? HA HA HA, TELL ME ANOTHER ONE
Arik Silverman ,   MIlwaukee USA   (05.23.08)
Anything Condoleezza says you know is the opposite of the truth: just look at the mess she's made of US foreign policy. I don't know about the Brit, but if he agrees with her, he's presumably just as bad. Did Hezbollah weaken its reputation among the Lebanese people? Very likely it did, at least with some segments, but they are probably segments where it wasn't popular to begin with. I think there can be no question that Hezbollah STRENGTHENED it's position with Lebanese politicians: it showed them that they better not think they can mess around with it, as US puppet Siniora tried to do when his government tried to crack down on Hezbollah communications. After all, there's absolutely no legal basis for removing the head of the airport just because he's friendly to Hezbollah. Likewise, the government never said what law Hezbollah's fiber optic communication system was violating. In all cases, the government action was not backed by law, only by perceived vague threats to its own entrenched position. The government clearly overstepped its authority, and Hezbollah put it back in its place.
21. @Walid in Riyad: Druze are united and armed.
Arik Silverman ,   MIlwaukee USA   (05.23.08)
Walid, maybe your cellphone is scrambling all messages from Mount Lebanon. If the Druze are united and armed against Hezbollah, why did Walid Jumblatt pull his fighters off the roads and surrender to the Druze faction that is allied with Hezbollah? (I think you can find that in Lebanon Daily Star or one of the Israeli or British papers online.) Oh, wait a minute. You are Walid? Could it be that you are Walid Jumblatt in exile?
22. There is no civil authority in Lebanon now.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (05.23.08)
The events of the past few days in Lebanon have not worsened the situation, but merely reveal to all the current situation. Nasrallah simply did us all a favor by revealing to all that the Lebanese government is just one of several forces operating in Lebanon - and not the most important of them. It is now clear to everyone that Hizbullah is running a state within a state, and that the Seniora government is serving Hizbullah and Iran by giving them a cover of international legitimacy. That is why Hizbullah did not complete its takeover of Lebanon.
23. #21 Good one.. Definetly #11 is Walid Junblat feeling"High"
fadi ,   lebanon   (05.23.08)
24. #11 Dream on loser ! Junblat was begging over all tv screens
fadi ,   lebanon   (05.23.08)
for Talal Erslan and Wiaam Wahab (hizbullah druze allies) to stop the fighting and he handed over to Talal Erslan most of the parts of Mount Lebanon that were under his control. The 2nd in command in Walid Lunblat's militia was seriosuly injured in the fighting! We all remember and see the black and ugly face of junblat since the fighting strated and how he was dwarfed and surrounded.
25. "Peace deal"? Is that's what these things are called?
