1. Israel cannot trust Turkey as it turns Islamist
Millie ,   Israel   (05.27.08)
We can have a partnership, just not an entrusted one.
2. The Golan should remain Israeli.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (05.27.08)
If Syria wants peace with Israel, it should offer in exchange the Golan. The Golan represent for Israel more security than "peace" with Syria. But of course that will not happen. So, there is no reason for Israel to be generous with the Mafia regime of Assad. The Assad family has established a hereditary dynasty shored up by repression within, and confrontation and terror abroad. The rule of the Assads is not aimed at improving the lot of their people or forwarding a particular ideology. They changed ideology from secular Arabism to a seemingly impossible confection of pan-Arabism and Islamist extremism. It is pointless to “engage” Syria in dialogue except insofar as it is possible to confront them with their violations and insist that they mend their ways. 3. What a joke
JAy3 ,   Israel   (05.27.08)
All this while Syria is arming itself to the teeth with latest weapons from Russia. They just signed a 3 billion dollar deal!. Also at same they have signed agreements with Iran to back hezbollah and to not make peace with Israel. Sorry, but Syria is taking you for a fool Mr Babacan. Just more stalling tactics.
4. turkey says we can talk direct syria says & iran get closer
wer tyuop[   (05.27.08)
The same day that Assad anounces closer ties with Iran Turkey anounces a common ground has been found and direct talks are possible. Once Assad has the Golan he will only get closer to Iran because its Iran paying his bills .. treaties can be boken. Assad cant risk distancing himself from Hizbollah and the other terror groups to much, they see his biggest supporters. Betray them and they will betray you and especialy if Iran insists Syria keep backing them. When they carry out attacks from the Golan Assad will say look I am doing my best but its not easy you know. As long as he is denying repsobsiblity for the attacks then he hasnt broken his side of the bargin. What happens when the Golan is flooded with arabs as Assad pays people to move to the Golan which he will it will be like having Gaza city on the backdoor ... its going to be to big for us to send in troops to go and clean up and it wont be as easy either to send troops to the Golan which would be soverign Syrian territory. We would be officialy invading Syria, even targeted assainations could be seen as an act of war. Israel is condemed and if it came to war Iran & Hizbollah would probably join the fight so we would be fighting both Iran, Syria and terrorists .. it wouldnt surprise me if Assad permited Iran to build airbases in Syria putting Iranian jets in striking range of Israel. Any attempt to make peace at the expense of the Golan could end up being a peace process to the next full scale war with Syria It would make 1973 look like a scuffle. There would be Hamas fighting us in the South and who knows if the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood managed to seize control in Egypt its possible even Egypt will join the fight. In the north there will be Syria, Iran and Hizbollah and unlike in 1973 the arab weapons are alot more modern than what they were then Israeli casulties would be huge. What do we di when a ceacefire is eventualy called for but terrorists like Hamas have allready infliltrated the country Syria & Iran might agree to a ceacefire in exchange for something from Israel but terror groups dont recognise the UN and their ceacefire agreements they will continue their attacks. If we keep things as they are now where we dont have formal peace with Syria but we have quiet and the Golan then we dont risk any of those problems or we can have Assads signature hanging on the wall of Olmerts jail cell along with his politicaly apointed nobel prize and be put in a situation where full scale war is more likley thah it has been for decades.
