For those of us who are comic book fans. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michal Chabon is a must read.
3. Sadly there is a curse on those who play the role of
Rivkah   (06.15.08)
superman on TV (Steve Reeves) and in movies (Christopher Reeve). Steve Reeves who was also played the twins in the movie, "Gone With the Wind", commited suicide. Christopher Reeve broke his neck in a horse riding event when he was thrown from the horse. There are lessons to be learned from these tragedies. Young actors should be hesitant to play the role of Superman since that role has a curse attached to it, much like playing the "Joker" in Batman movies. Another lesson to be learned from that is that Decadron or a similar injectable corticosteroid should be in the emergency medicine kits of EMT's at sporting events since the quadraplegia in Christopher Reeve could have been prevented if he had been injected with that within half an hour of the accident to prevent swelling. The curse of playing Superman seems to extend to the families of the actors, too, since Christopher Reeve's wife died of lung cancer after he died and she did not even smoke. Bizarre.

Once again you missed the point. The article is not about the Superman curse. It's about an exhibit highlighting the Jewish contribution to the comic genre. I for one find all these curses absurd. You know everyone who read a comic will die ... eventually.
5. Seeing "curses" where there are none
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (06.15.08)
Here's a clue, Rivka: two do not make a pattern. Dean Cain, who played Superman in the Lois and Clark series, is still going strong, as is Tom Welling who plays young Clark Kent in today's Smallville series. I bet you suck up conspiracy theories too. Perhaps rock stars shouldn't fly in airplanes because several died in crashes. When Zerivitz says, "I didn't know these (characters) were created by Jews", it's evident that even cultural Jews don't appreciate the effect Jews had on American culture. There simply wouldn't be a comic industry in the US as we know it were it not for the Jewish contribution. Even today, Israeli Avi Arad helped revitalize Marvel, resulting in the Spiderman and X-Men movie franchises. As to Superman, though he was destined to be raised by a salt of the earth midwestern family, one needn't look deep to see the Jewish issues of assimilation, dual identity ("passing") and higher destiny underlying the story.
6. Areualush: As usual, YOU miss the point. Glorifying a man
Rivkah   (06.16.08)
named Superman with supernatural attributes like flying with a cape, particularly with an S for Satan on his garment, is not honoring God. Children should not read such garbage comic books. For Jews to originate Superman is an offense to the covenant God made with them for Abraham's sake. Burn the Superman comic books. They are a curse, even to children who should be reading Torah or Bible, not about a fictional idol.
7. Rivkah , who needs to honor god ?
bar ,   Israel   (06.16.08)
Does he "honors" us ? Certainly not when "he" permitted you to live and write such b...s . And you , you honors your pets , the only living you can live with , above Humans .
8. 7Bar: You do not work in a hospital emergency room where
Rivkah   (06.16.08)
the bodies of children and insane adults or what is left of them are brought in and then taken to the morgue because they jumped off a building with a towel cape thinking they were superman. Superman was their god and they tried to be like him.

You remind me of a nuts called Linda Riverra: She too was posting a lot of BS on this site a few years ago.

In Israel we have the Jerusalem syndrome. There are all kinks of crazies wandering around pretending to be Jesus or the prophets. One such person recently jumped off the roof of Poriya. Does that mean the Bible should be banned?

Joe Shuster, the creator of Superman was actually a Jewish Canadian!

You got the best comment! I do agree 100%. By the way, don't you miss the long cut & paste "meaningless sort of wast of time" articles of Linda? LOL I hope she's doing well!
13. 10 Areualush: Jesus and the Prophets did not jump off
Rivkah   (06.16.08)
buildings, so the people who had Jerusalem Syndrome who did that were not following the example of the Prophets. Satan tempted Yeshua and told him to jump off a high mountains and let the angels catch him. Yeshua's reply was, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." Why should the Bible be banned when the Prophets did not jump off buildings or tell people they could do that and survive like the Superman comics do?
14. 9 TC: Only the wise recognize wisdom. The mysteries of God
Rivkah   (06.16.08)
are foolishness to those whose eyes and understanding have not been opened to reveal God's wisdom. You call experience B.S. Do you also call God a fool? The bible says a fool says in his heart there is no God. I am not a fool nor is God, but you may be.

Great article! However, you forgot to mention the greatest Jewish Superhero: SuperRabbi.
16. The first Superhero was Jacob, when he became Israel
Jake   (06.18.08)
Genesis 32: 25 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 26 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled with him. 27 And he said: 'Let me go, for the day breaketh.' And he said: 'I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.' 28 And he said unto him: 'What is thy name?' And he said: 'Jacob.' 29 And he said: 'Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.' 30 And Jacob asked him, and said: 'Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.' And he said: 'Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?' And he blessed him there. 31 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: 'for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.'
