1. LOL !
Marcel ,   Florida   (06.17.08)
A truce with the jihadist of mohammed ? It should last about a day if that. How senile Israel has become in her 60's ,having forgotten the concept of defeating her enemies instead of wasting time on a useless and only temporary truce.
2. truce
jeremy ,   hula valley kibbutz   (06.17.08)
Yeah right. I give it at the most a week, before rockets start raining down again and the army sends in the troops again.
3. WHERE IS GILAD SHALIT!!!! OLMERT GOVERNMENT OF COWARDS!!!
David P. ,   Santa Cruz, USA   (06.17.08)
How can the Gov. sign off on a truce while terrorists hamas still hold Shalit captive in Gaza?
4. And no sign of Shalit! Residents of Ashdod, you're next!
Millie ,   Israel   (06.17.08)
Here comes the bit of hell Olmert and his sellout idiots have in store. Shall we give the phony "cease fire" one day or 2? How about 2 hours?
5. Translation: Israel caved to Hamas' terms
Raymond in DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (06.17.08)
We obviously won't know if this report holds true until it's made "official". But if true, it means Israel has caved, almost across the board, to Hamas' terms. Of course, it'll be implemented "gradually". The consequences are easy to predict. Rocket and mortar fire will continue, at least sporadically, but not enough for Israel to end their restraint. Smuggling of arms will continue, as Egypt makes only a modest effort to stop them. Then, following a damaging attack, Israel will struggle to decide "What do we do now?" It's so easy to predict, because we've been here before. And Shalit? He will be dealt with in a separate act of capitulation.
6. why wait?
Ivan ,   Haifa   (06.17.08)
7. Let the betting begin!! I say it won't last for more that 6
hrs. What say you?? ,   Rueben, Israel   (06.17.08)
8. Case Fire With Hamas . . .
emanon ,   USA   (06.17.08)
But what about Fatah, Islamil Jihad, Islamic Brotherhood and the other dozen or so names the terrorists operate under? Gimme a break! We know how this game is played.
9. HAMAS GETS TO FRESHEN AND PREPARE FOR THEIR NEXT ATTACK
(06.17.08)
10. Congratulations Hamas on your Total Victory
TK ,   USA   (06.17.08)
Patience paid off. Yield to nothing and all of the movement was left to Israel. Hamas gained everything and Israel nothing - in fact lost any leverage in future negotiations for control of Rafah crossing and Shalit. Any price demanded by Syria and Hezbollah just went up. Oh, Israel did earn the goodwill of the EU and Bush/Rice. Better use it quick, it has a very short shelf life.
11. Isn't life beautiful???
Enzo ,   london,uk   (06.17.08)
The sun is shining, the birds singing, the children playing, no more qassams, no more terror, no more alarms...! Only Israel makes terrorists look like Gandhi's followers!
12. just another tactic to try avoid early elections
zionist forever   (06.17.08)
The ceacefire will be for a maximum of 6 months No more restrictions on Gaza so all the damage done to Hamas over the past year has been in vain because they have shown in the past a talent of rapairing damage very quickly. In 6 months time Hamas will be a mirror image of Hizbullah in 2006 ,,, we agreed to a ceacefire at the wrong time and under the wrong terms a matter of months later they were stronger than they were before the war began. Hamas will soon be stronger than before the seige began and when they are ready they will come out fighting at full strengh rather as they are right now. The practical solution would have been to get tougher with the seige and prehaps followed by a small scale in an out miltary operation. Olmert though wants to be seen as to be doing something and the rocket attacks stop so when this bill to call for early elections is put forward on June 25 things wont look so bad anymore so neither Barak or the political prostitutes Shas will pull out of the coalition Between them Likud and probably Yisral Beitantu and a handfall of individuals from other parties they will probably get 30-35 votes in favour. Olmert will have at least Kadima, Labour, Meeretz, Shas, the arab parties making it an easy victory and all hoped of early elections will be killed for good and there wont be much of an Israel left when the election finaly does come around in 2010. This is all about Olmerts survival and has absolutly nothing to do with security and so the public will be denied an election which the majority want but the politicians will rally around Olmert and say screw you to the Israeli public.
13. Good for Hamas
Ali ,   Ramallah- Falesteen   (06.17.08)
Hamas has proved that they are trustful and reliable leadership, unlike Olmert, Abbas, and Fatah, they respect their word. No surprise, then, why we support them and we'd elect them next time. Congrats, for the new strong leaders.
14. Sad day
Natan   (06.17.08)
It is a sad day in Israel's history. Instead of Hamas begging Israel to stop bombing the hell out of it, it is Israel that came across as one who was "begging" Hamas to stop firing missiles..Shame on you Olmert..
15. So as of Thursday the IDF should BE READY TO SHOOT
Miriam ,   Israel   (06.17.08)
when the first rocket is fired into Israel which can be – and probably will be - at any moment EVEN ON THURSDAY. The Arabs’ truce lasts as long as the memory of a goldfish. Now, let's see if Olmert and Barak will have the courage to do that.
16. Ali , you cant possibly believe that nonsense
jared ,   orlando   (06.17.08)
you are joking right? "a trustful and reliable leadership" The only thing Hamas can be trusted to do or lead is launch terrorist attacks to enact their charter of destroying israel. When you are consumed by hatred, that is the only thing you cant be trust to do. In fact for a while there not too long ago, a number of months back, things were fairly quiet between Gaza and Israel. Then , if you trace back the news stories, right before the time US was brokering peace talks with the PA at Annapolis and at least attempting to forge a peace, Hamas, not Israel, started its latest round of rocket attacks. These acts accrued and for a while israel did not respond and then finally did, culminating in its current efforts. You reap what you sow and you have only yourselves to blame. What is it about them exactly you find so wonderful. Sure you had an election , which should not have been pressured because you obviously were not ready as a people. And with Hamas in charge, it may be your last election. But, elections are only one step towards democracy. What else? A developed and independent judiciary? A balance of powers? Separation of powers? Rule of law? Due process? Please... And the strong leadership of Hamas has certainly helped in the development of significant infrastructure? Or wait, let me guess, its all Israels fault? Certainly if even a fraction of the effort and money was utilized towards building a country of your own rather than trying to destroy another , you have your own state by now and devout world support in doing so. You ever think for even a second that maybe its not all or even mostly israels fault? I have considered both sides thoroughly and for a long time
17. Yes, Natan, you are totally right!
Ali ,   Ramallah- Falesteen   (06.17.08)
And i think that Hamas is able to make progress in the peace talks with Israel now. Unfortunately, the Israelis understand and respect one langauge: Force and power. President Abbass has been talking about peace since Annapolis about peace and your Olmert continues new buildings in the West Bank and E. Jerusalem!!! Thanks God we have Hamas who can teach the Israeli government a good lesson.
18. To Miriam: Israel Should Whuppin Hamas
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (06.17.08)
To Marcel and Miriam: any temporary cease fire only aids Hamas..both against Israel and Fatah (Abbas). Abbas must be pissing in his pants, knowing that now there will be unrestricted smuggling into the Strip..thus beefing up the 20,000 plus Hamas army. Fatah gets APGs..and Hamas gets that plus. Israel doesn't realize that everything the Arabs do is for THEIR benefit., ISRAEL is always the loser. After Nov. Ahmad will test an atomic device..then things will really explode., with Bush out and Obama in. It's not about Hudnas, it's about the future for the M.E.. So far, Islamic-fascism is winning big time. Israel should be attacking Hamas 24-7, making THEM plead for mercy. That's how to win this conflict.
19. Sad day
Shar ,   USA   (06.17.08)
How can this be possible? Israelis, you more than anyone know very well that a cease fire is simply giving these Hamas scum time to heal and re-arm. I doubt if any progress will be made about Gilad Shalit. After decades of gritty determination, you have survived and earned the world's respect (at least the non-anti-zionists). But for the past few years, starting with the 2000 lebanon withdrawl, intifadas, gaza withdrawl, 2006 lebanon war, and now this... Please Israelis...you are at the forefront of the war against Islamic Terrorism. Please take your nation back from your incompetent leaders. I fear for your future.
20. #18 Olmert and Barak are MUCH TOO weak
Miriam ,   Israel   (06.17.08)
and pathetic to go against Hamas’ proposal of a ceasefire. Olmert’s and Barak’s only concern is what will Rice, the EU, the UN and other nutty organizations and anti-Semitic countries say? That's why I suggested for them to wait until Thursday but not a moment longer. And even then this powerless government will not lift a finger to fight back if the enemies break their truce - as is expected within several hours (or perhaps even minutes).
21. Jared, Orlando
Ali ,   Ramallah- Falesteen   (06.17.08)
Well, don't you think that having a parallel power against Israel is a good progress for the Palestinians? I do think so. Obviously, you are supporting the Israeli occupation point of view, why can't Americans be an honest voice for a moment??? How can the Palestinian people trust peace talks while Israel continues building illegal settlements in East Jerusalem and the West Bank? This area is supposed to be, even according to C. Rice perspective, the new Palestinian State! The story is not who's fault, it's rather occupation and oppression, if Israel is not willing to give the Palestinian rights peacefully, then we have no choice but resisting occupation till we have those rights back.
22. It is our children's problem
ben yaacov ,   il   (06.17.08)
because this generation lacks the courage to do what we KNOW must be done. Hussein and Assad both knew and proved there is a solution to Hamas and their ilk.
23. #1 Marcel
David ,   USA   (06.17.08)
I agree with you 100% and you said it without calling anyone names like rats. Now if you would quit calling me Dave and use my name David when you respond to me I would really be proud of you.
24. Truce
G. HAll ,   USA   (06.17.08)
If Israel didn't have the strength they have there would be no talk of a truce. Since they do, if a truce can be found then seek it. If it doesn't come given time, then other measures should be sought.
25. The Arab media
Righteous Zionist ,   Israel   (06.17.08)
are inevitably the source of this kind of disinformation - currently crap about Israel making deals with Arab terror groups or their backer Syria and giving concessions. The aim of such false reports is to weaken the morale of Israel in a time of deadly conflict. A truce with Hamas would be a disaster for Israel and the Hamas rockets would reach Kiryat Gat, Ashdod and Bet Shemesh.
26. Israel recognized Hamas first!!!!
John ,   London   (06.17.08)
27. Ali #21
David ,   USA   (06.17.08)
What makes you think that anyone with an ounce of common sense, or morality cares what C. Rice's perspective is? Do you honestly believe that the road map will really lead to peace? Bush and Rice have 6 more months, then what Ali? What makes you think that Israel building homes in their own State, on their own land is a violation of anything real and meaningful? If you and the rest of your people really think all this road map stuff is real and meaningful it is no wonder you swallow the lies of hamas. Go to Jordan where you belong and forget this nonsense about another state for palis in the center of Israel. It isn't going to happen and if it does it will last no longer than maybe 3.5 years. All this cease fire stuff is dreams of corrupt politicians building their bank accounts.
28. Barak: Too early to declare truce
Jim ,   Jerusalem Israel   (06.17.08)
doesn't it make one tired listening to this pompous fool, " too early to declare truce", we should have to wait for your preparing military operations instead right? wrong, even our enemies shouldn't have to wait that long.
29. 'Cease Fire' does not exist in Arabic lexicon. Check here:
Ibrahim ,   USA   (06.17.08)
http://www.2muslims.com/cgi-bin/dictionary/csvsearch.pl?search=cease+fire there is: Hudna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hudna "A particularly famous early hudna was the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah between Muhammad and the Quraysh tribe, ending with Muhammad marching on Mecca along with 10000 men, two years after the hudna was signed, and taking over the Quraysh."
30. #13 It was once said that Hizbullah were trustworthy
Jake   (06.17.08)
and reliable, and so everybody believed them when they said they would never turn their weapons on other Lebanese. Now we all know that was a lie.
