Not only every map of the area in the possession of the UN indicates that it belonged to Syria, but Bashar Assad, despite verbally paying homage to Lebanese claims for political expediency, has refused to to confirm this officially or to demarcate the border before Israel withdraws. Assad said he would only allow UN troops to patrol the area if Israel withdraws, and he specifically forbade Lebanese troops from entering the Shebaa farms. On June 5, 1967, the Shebaa farms were under Syrian military control of the Golan Heights, from which Syria launched ground attack in the Kibbutz Dan region, air attacks, and artillery attacks of the Upper Galilee
