Noa ,   Beer Sheva, Israel   (06.26.08)
Who is so sex-obsessed that he forces unmarried girls to cover their hair, in order not to be tempted?
32. Haredim=closet Freudians
Yaakov ,   Immanuel Israel   (06.26.08)
Their costume after the Haredi makeover looks either like a paper sack or the some garb used on Iraqi prisoners in Abu Graib(sp). I live in a Haredi yishuv of Immanuel for 4.5 years(because it is cheap) and I come to the conclusion that I never want to be Haredi and I think they are all closet Freudians. All things revovling around sex and trying to control the animal that lies under their skins. We are becoming like a religious state in the bad sense, and we may end up like being ruled by Jewish Taliban types. G-d forbid. If they are offended by this so called imodest dress...do not go to the ceremony. I do not because I hate crowds. Our nation is made up of all peoples, we are (at least in name)a Democracy...let us at least act like one. We should follow the American model of seperation of religion and state...forcing religion down peoples throats will not make things better, it will make them worse. People who want to be religious or who are should respect ones that are not.

"...but will have as many abortions as they have children if not more which is a great shame." How brainwashed are you against the secular population? Not all secular people are prostitutes and whores who sleep around and have abortions left and right.
34. Knock Knock - whose there?
Simon ,   TA the free city   (06.26.08)
its the modesty police from Shas, we`ve come to see that everyone in your house is modestly dressed. All women should cover up rather like those ones in Afganistan, and we will be round on Friday to make sure your not watching TV, or driving and that everything on your plate is to our apporval. Dont forget the Pessach Patrol and the Yom Kippur police to, anyone caught watching DVDs in their home will be stoned in the square along with a good whipping. This is our future folks! People should stand up to these religious parasites who have the arrogance to impose their so called life style on the majority all on the basis of a religious superstition.
35. #33
JMK ,   NY   (06.26.08)
There has been in the US over the last thirty something years about forty million plus abortions, and we have about tens of millions of both legal and illegal immigrants, a country needs people to grow and advance, to work and produce, israel faces the same problem only on smaller scale, abortions by the tens of thousands every year, so what is the reason divorcing sexuality from anything decent and good, and leaving just the fun.
36. It's time to break...
Soeren ,   Cologne/Germany   (06.26.08)
the power of the religious in Jerusalem. It seems they are turned on by these girls dancing (a pedophile tendency?) and obsessed with sex – and therefore have to "hide" what they can't accept: the female body. Desire and defense against. Under this circumstances it is good when the homosexuals celebrate their "gay parade" in the holy city. Don't give the streets to the extremists. It seems democracy and secular society are under fire in Israel – it seems to become more and more "Islamic"...
37. Modesty Patrols in Jerusalem
milli ,   Israel   (06.26.08)
Shades of Talibanism in Israel! Seems like the ultra religious people are trying to assert their veiws and lifestyle on the rest of us...stop them now before it becomes law that all women must be covered head to toe like in Saudi Arabia.Afganistan,Iran! If ultra religous men can't control their "urges" then perhaps it is them that need adapt and perhaps sequester themselves in their own onclaves like monastaries so that the rest of us can enjoy our freedom to dress as we want! If they want women to dress like they do in the Arab countries then let them move to them!
38. bridge dancers
(06.26.08)
public ceremony must take into consideration the multi-public. at the gay parade they can dance for the faggots - the multi-public doesn't care cuz won't be there.
39. thank you #26...
orli ,   Jerusalem Israel   (06.26.08)
listen to yourself...
40. Burkas are Next...
guy ,   los angeles   (06.26.08)
Why listen to people who don't even recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel....and get their instructions from the Mullahs...
41. Why we don't want Haredi in our neighbourhoods !!
Yisrael ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.26.08)
They are so intolerant and condescending, and I consider myself Orthodox, albeit a tolerant Zionist ! They chase Jews away from Judaism , thus performing a tremendous Chillul Hashem, and then they have the chutzpah to assume an air of superiority ! No wonder they are the most hated group in Israel ! Their forebears brought on the destruction of the Second Temple. Let's not let them do it again !!
42. Haredi coercion us wrong
Umm Danny ,   Israel   (06.26.08)
These young girls (not married ladies) were covered up in outfits not remotely resembling the vulgarity of the body-baring outfits of the dancing competitions currently on TV. Whether dancers were necessary to the ceremony or not, the Haredim would of course have fussed about female voices in a choir too. Its time we accepted that Haredi mores are not Torah from Moshe Rabbenu!
43. Simon is a Legend
Chocko ,   NY, USA   (06.26.08)
Simon. I have to hand it to you... Its rare to see an opinion that is actually based on thinking before they type. Thank you for 'existing' Hahahaha.
44. #16- But I love a good bacon rasher.
Chocko ,   NY, USA   (06.26.08)
Hmmmmmm...... Succulent...
45. Have we gone crazy?
Jerry ,   Eilat   (06.26.08)
Are we in Iran? Does every aspect of our lives need to be controlled by these draft dodging, tax avoiding, conversion wrecking people?
46. Lets organise a nude parade in Jerusalem!
me ,   Israel   (06.26.08)
Any takers???????
47. It's time to have a nude demonstration !!!
ruthy ,   J-lem   (06.26.08)
48. What was wrong with their clothes??
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (06.26.08)
Before I saw the photo, I pictured girls in short skirts. I was shocked to see that they were covered and wearing pants! So what??? What was so immodest about that??? They should have refused to perform rather than give in to the demands!!
49. Stay Out of Jerusalem if You Don't Like It
(06.26.08)
There are other countries with religious and secular communities and the two don't interfere with the other. The people who actually live in Jerusalem don't want their city to become the city of sleaze that is Tel Aviv. Good for them.
50. Seculars should stay in Tel Aviv...or New York
Rodney ,   Tel Aviv   (06.26.08)
As a secular Jew, I still feel that at least Jerusalem is the one place where a Jewish/Torah lifestyle should be fully respected - it is the one place i feel i can go when i am feeling spiritual and get in touch with God - leave Jerusalem out of it...you can pollute the rest of the world if you want. In this point I hold by the Haredim and others religious Jews. Before we get so caught up in our strong opinions and hate speech, let's try and remember this is Jerusalem we are talking about...remember...Jerusalem - or have you forgotten what that place means to us?
51. A little bread and cheese to go along with the whine?
Yoni ,   Chiloquin   (06.26.08)
The Haredi don't go to other peoples neighborhoods and make them cover their hair or legs! So don't complain when when they see fit to keep a modest decorum in theirs. P.T. Barnum said it best, "you can't please all the people all the time". From the article I see that Jerusalem needs to change their lineup of entertainment if this same troop dances at every event. Maybe Olmert is getting a kickkback from them?
52. #3why don't you mind your own bussiness , if you don't like
rachel ,   usa   (06.26.08)
don't look. You cover yourself from head to toe ....or better go to saudi arabia
53. #9 good point . it must be lust in their eyes
rachel ,   usa   (06.26.08)
54. we women are not going to take any of this bull
rachel ,   usa   (06.26.08)
55. Rodney , hypocrite
bar ,   Israel   (06.26.08)
You live in T A ? Fine . There are people who want to be free in their Capital . If those dancers were half naked , i eventually could agree that it was "offensive" , but pants ? Yes , for some people [ humans ? ] even pants are "offensive" . Where will it end ? Don't forget , that those charidim did NOTHING for their Capital . Some even tried to obstruct Palmach members enter the besieged town in 48 , when they had fought their way to bring supply to them . And now they want to dictate their lifestyle on everyone . And they try , even abroad .
56. What was wrong with what they had on before?
Avi   (06.26.08)
We're talking about Jerusalem in JUNE-it gets very hot there. And there's not much relief from that at night either. Jerusalem is more conservative than Tel. That's a given. Perhaps, there could have been something else done-a choir, a marching band, or even presentations and sppeches. Having said that, they opted for dancers. Look, seeing how they were dressed, they were not too immodest and dressed the way they did for the climate. They should have just refused to perform if they were going to be wrapped in head to toe garments. This is Israel here, not anywhere else in the Middle East.
57. Modest Dress
NYC Girl   (06.26.08)
There's something about these outfits that go way beyond modesty. And, as one of the other talkbackers noted, these girls aren't even required to cover their hair, yet it appears as if the Haredim keep pushing the envelope. But rest assured, the more their fanaticism is acceded to, the more of it they'll attempt to impose.
58. predisposition to theocracies
jacob ,   lake tahoe, usa   (06.26.08)
wholesome, common-sense decency seems to have evaporated the imposition of such 'cover up' costumes is inherently dehumanizing & makes them look as wacko as extreme muslims there's no place in the world for jewish, muslim, or christian theocracies & their inherent extremisms we need to take the core of religions & apply such as the foundations of our rules & laws from a moral perspective; but religion, as such, has no place in governance of societies
59. an improvement
Ben ,   Gush Etzion   (06.26.08)
the new clothes were an inprovement, who needs to see potbellies and crotches? Maybe they should have worn tutus(in honor of the Bishop of Gaza Desmond Tutu) or burkas (in honor of our biss bartners the Balastinians who will own Jerusalem before Olmert leaves office)
60. Modesty v. immodesty
di   (06.26.08)
The political corectness and so-called bias of the article is irrelevant, Mr Berenyi Andras. The issue here is beyond that. Now, let me see...who is modest and who is immodest. When one looks at the girls in the 1st picture, one sees a group of very nice, smiling and happy teenagers dressed excatly like all good Israeli teenagers do today - properly and fit for the hot season. But looking at the second picture, I cannot help noticing a large group of very unhappy, winter-clad and defeated teenagers. The forceful imposition of the harredicrats on every aspect of society in order to upset it is quite obvious this time, too. So, why are they surprised that things turn sour whereever and whenever they impose "their way". You can't turn 70% of the population into sudden harredis, especially by inciting them. On the other hand, I can only imagine what is in the soul and on the mind of these pretty little dancers regarding "harredi modesty" and educational values. So much for their role-modelling !
