And right . Right , in Hebrew Goy means People , nation . Wrong , when we , Jews , say Goy , it means non Jew , and is generally meaned in a pejorative way . And what about the "shabbes goy" ?
34. bridge
sas ,   israel   (06.28.08)
jerusalem is as it is becasue while ohlmert was mayor he did NOTHING but except bribes. He neglected the entire city. Now he is quickly ruining the entire country as PM. I actually find the bridge refreshing. The parasite jews that live near there should be moved away from there.
35. Wrong Wrong Wrong
Sarah Fisher ,   Tel Aviv   (06.28.08)
You're very wrong. The bridge is beautiful and symbolic. Every time I enter the city I think of the harp that David played that pleased the Lord. I think it's a spectacular design, in a spectacular city. Yes, Jerusalem has many problems that should not be brushed over, but the bridge is part of the new light rail system. It's important for people to WANT to ride the light rail. And I have to say, I look forward to it, because appearance wise, the design that I have read about sounds sleek, efficient, and convenient.
36. Well said!

Well said...you summarized the whole keta better than anyone has so far...thanks for sharing your well-thought-out and well-written assessment!
37. Bridge design should have been based on
bob ,   boston   (06.28.08)
antiquities not on the ego and arogance of the architect and the cromies who pushed this through
38. To #30 herod was not an arab!
jason white ,   afula,israel   (06.28.08)
The two Temples built by the Jews before there were muslims were the most beautiful building in the world. Arabs cannot do more that build suicide bombs. Further more, better to spend the money on this bridge that to give it to the poor. They do not contribute to society and many refuse to work.
39. Bridge
Moriah ,   Jerusalem   (06.28.08)
I would not want to be either on this bridge nor under it!!!
40. Re: 32 Amsterdam, Holland
Ariel Ben Yohanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efriam   (06.28.08)
You are right, sorry. I have a friend who made aliyah from Amsterdam and he says Israel is the only country to which Holland does not recognize dual citizenship.
41. Bridge

This is So true! Shamefull and sad!
42. A beautiful site.
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (06.29.08)
The bridge is beautiful if you think not then you have no taste. True it cost a lot of money, money that could have gone to other worth while causes but what is done is done to late to complain so just enjoy the looks, the blend of the old and new.

"Goy" is not an adjective, as in "Goy bridge" or "goy concept.". "Spanish" in not a noun, as in "Designed by a Spanish." "Lightning" does not take the indefinite object and is not spelled "lightening."
44. Re: 43
Ariel Ben Yohanan ,   Kfar Tapuah, Efraim   (06.29.08)
English is not my mother tongue and I apologize if I made mistakes. Nevertheless I think if we consider language as a means to communicate thoughts - my intervention # 10 was pretty "successful", pulling more than ten talkbacks on its own. The point however is clear: anti-Jewish sentiment is alive and well in Israel today. And this bridge is a symbol of it. Now, let me check the spelling.
45. Ugly Bridge
NIli ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (06.29.08)
That this is an ugly bridge to look at is obvious--that is is going to sit unused for years is a crime. You only missed one item--in Jerusalem, ordinary people can't find a decent place to live. People are asking over $1,000 per month for what amounts to no more than a storage closet. WE live like rats and the bridge--Olmerts doing again!--hangs like a missile heading for Ramallah to the entrance of the Holy City. To all involved all I can think of is SHAME ON YOU!
46. Re #10
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (06.29.08)
Sir, it sounds like you have a problem with Goy's. So what if a Jew had designed it and it was built only in Israel would have you liked it then.
47. Ariel , # 43
bar ,   Israel   (06.29.08)
This bridge "anti Jewish" ? You are so retarded in your views , suffer from paranoia , that you see anti Jewish feelings everywhere , even in a bridge . 10 reactions on your # 10 [ i did'nt check it ] but did they acclaim you ?
48. Nili , an ugly bridge ?
bar ,   Israel   (06.29.08)
Not for me , and i think that my taste regarding beauty is commonly accepted . To live in the Capital , you have to pay . Don't you exagerate at least a little bit when talking about rent ? I don't think that Mr Olmert had a say in the bridge , but for me this expense is justified . Jerusalem deserves a modern urban public transportation service , and this has a price tag .
49. Stop ruining Jerusalem! NOT just ugly but out of place
elianna ,   Jerusalem   (06.30.08)
Cannot agree with the writer more, except to say in addition that there no connection to Jerusalem character nor our history shown by this bridge. Any Jerusalem stone? Any connection to the traditional local architecture? It might look fine in Tel Aviv but in Jerusalem it is totally out place. The mayor wants to create a modern city - do it some where else. There is only one Jerusalem- Stop trying to turn it into a second class Los Angeles. There are a lot of those already. The mayor should recheck his eyes and priorities.
50. To Bar #33. Biblical vs. Modern Hebrew
Jake   (06.30.08)
The meaning of Goy as a non-Jew is mostly a product of post-Biblical Hebrew and Yiddish. In Biblical Hebrew, the definition of Goy as "people, nation" very often is used to refer to the Jews themselves. For instance,in Genesis 12.2, God tells Abraham: וְאֶעֶשְׂךָ, לְגוֹי גָּדוֹל, וַאֲבָרֶכְךָ, וַאֲגַדְּלָה שְׁמֶךָ; וֶהְיֵה, בְּרָכָה. "And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing."

Goy was used in a "pejorative" meaning . Nothing to do with old or modern Hebrew . You have'nt to explain this word to me , i know it very well .
