1. Will the dictator olmert approve?

2. The Golan – The security insurance of Israel.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (06.30.08)
One hardly requires the military acumen of Clausewitz to appreciate the huge military value of the Golan that gives Israel command over the approaches to Damascus and precludes Syrian command over the entire northern portion of Israel. This provides Israel with unequivocal deterrence, which has ensured that the Syrian frontier has been the most peaceful for over third of century – without Israel yielding a centimeter of territory. Only the moronic or the malicious could suggest that Israel would be better off militarily without the Golan. Nowadays, the Golan is an integrated region of Israel : http://xrl.us/bjvii

4. Robert Bernier: What Is Wrong with Israel?
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (06.30.08)
To Robert Bernier: You are right on the mark. I am an American born Jew and a proud Zionist. What is wrong with Israeli leaders? A referendum, while Barak explains to foreign officials that he would consider relinquishing it? What gives? This is partly what is wrong with your country..too many cooks all saying the opposite! W/O Egypt, there can be no war. W/O Syria having the Golan, it cannot enter., it's Scuds are dangerous, but won't danger Israel's existence. Hasn't this all been explained by former US generals. The balance of terror will keep Iran at bay..and Syria knows it's fate if it attacks w/o the Golan Hts..the best tank trap possible. I could scream when I hear more about giving BACK the Golan, AFTER SYRIA attacked Israel 3 times in 60 years.
5. This law is not enough
Frank ,   Canada   (06.30.08)
First of all, it should stipulate that Leftist policies are permitted only through referendum. Secund, 'concessions' to the 'moderates' are not covered by this bill.
6. legal loop holes to avoid referendum
zionist forever   (06.30.08)
Based on todays Knesset Olmert in theory could get his 80MK support to avoid a referendum 29 Kadima 12 Shas - easily bought off 19 Labour - Barak is all in favour 10 Arab parties 5 Meeretz Buy off a few of the smaller parties like Gil and you get the extra votes If we are being offered a referendum then why should we allow the politicians a get our clause. I am sure a survivor who usualy gets his way like Olmert could pay off anybody he needs to get the votes needed to stop the referendum and push forward his plans. We have seen an example of that the way Olmert did a deal with Barak to avoid an election. Any referendum must be indipendently drafted we cannot have one that says somethng along the lines of The price of peace is the Golan so DO YOU WANT TO HAVE PEACE WITH SYRIA DO YOU NOT WANT TO HAVE PEACE WITH SYRIA Most people wil say they would like to have peace with Syria so they either vote against making peace if they want the Golan or they accept that if they want peace they will have to give it up. The referendum must also state that a vote to keep the Golan means a vote to keep all of it not allow 99% of it given away but we still theoreticly have kept it because we still have 1% The government can be pretty sure of winning their referendum because we have turned the question from should we give away the Golan to should we make peace. Referendum results must also be final for a minimum of 20 years not be something that applies to just one government and in future if in 20 years time they want to give it away then it must go once again to indipendently drafted constiution.
7. There was already one referendum on the Land of Israel...
SERGIO ,   ISRAEL   (06.30.08)
...AND THE PEOPLE FAILED MISERABLY. WE ARE STILL FASTING ON THE 9TH OF AV BECAUSE OF THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF WHAT THE BIBLE CALLS "GRASSHOPPERS" WHO WERE AFRAID AND - WITHOUT ANY RIGHT - REFUSED OUR GOD GIVEN HERITAGE

jason white ,   afula,israel   (06.30.08)
in the I.D.F. vote in the referendum. Perhaps we can have a referendum to see if there is a majority willing to cede the knesset to the syrians.
10. Israel has given up
Avraham ,   NYC   (06.30.08)
Sinai, Gaza and parts of Yehuda and Shomron in the past. What's there to prevent the same happening with the Golan? Israel's leaders are Israel's worst enemy.
11. Could we have a referendum for ceding the Clown Olmert ?
David ,   Houston   (07.01.08)
They can have Barak, Livni, Peres, really the entire circus, they can also have the "Palastinians" and the hostile "Israeli Arabs," we keep the Golan and it will be peace, love, and prosperity for all! (All except the Syrian people who will remain enslaved by their dictator Assad.)
12. 75% of Israelis oppose an Israeli withdrawal from all of...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (07.01.08)
75% of Israelis oppose an Israeli withdrawal from all of the Golan Heights. The War and Peace Index of April - a survey of 600 Israeli adults conducted by the B. I. Cohen Institute of Tel Aviv University - found that a whopping 75% of Israelis oppose an Israeli withdrawal from all of the Golan Heights for a full peace treaty with Syria, whereas only 19% favor this. Governmental talk of giving away the Golan in 1996 and 1999-2000 was repressed by widespread popular national campaigns against it as giving the golan to Syria, means having Iran in the Golan.. 14. Love of the land
Yehudi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.01.08)
Why do people only talk about security in reference to the Golan and East Jerusalem? The really important thing is that the Land is part of Eretz Yisrael and is a precious gift to us from G-d. The love of the Land is deeply rooted in our souls. Irrespective of security it is unthinkable to give away any part of our precious land.
