31. fewer swimming pools might solve the problem.
israeli ,   israel   (07.01.08)
Apparently the Palestinians have enough money and water to build and operate swimming pools almost everywhere: Nablus, Jenin, Hebron, Ramallah, Jericho http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=2&x_outlet=55&x_article=1486

#6, Abdel Karim, If you remember the Hula Lake so well, you should have also remembered the marshland that it had created. It wasn't a source of drinking water, and nor was it drained by water pumping - it was drained to use the marshland as farmland. Fairly recently (post 2000), part of that old marshland has been re-flooded to help restore the fertility of the land. And you're quite right about the Six Day War being in part about the water sources... if you do remember the events of the time, you'll also remember that the Syrians were actively attacking the construction of the National Waterline to prevent any water surplus from Lake Kinneret to reach the Center and South of the country - until then, pumping from just about anywhere possible was indeed common, because there was no true national water delivery system. That changed when the construction of the National Waterline was complete, not that it ended the conflict up north... The Syrians then tried to divert the Kinneret's sources - the Banias and Hazbani rivers, away from the lake, and thus attempting to make it a less viable water resource or even dry it up entirely. That's when the Israelis started shooting at Syrians working near the rivers, and this chain of events is part of what led to the Six Day War. As for the Litani water pumping... meh. Utter conspirazoid rubbish, I'm afraid. The current Lebanese Speaker of Parliament, Berri, once claimed that Israel sends trucks into Lebanon to steal its topsoil. Just as crap. And as for today... We reprocess sewage so that it can be used for the farming industry, and the reverse osmosis plants now produce actual drinking water from the seawater - Eilat and pretty much all that area of the Southern Negev get their water from desalination. The current "crisis" in Israel's water is about a single factor alone - the Treasury being too cheap. What do I mean by that? Simple. The Treasury argues that more desalination plants may prove useless in the future, in more rainy periods, as thus would be a waste of money - both in terms of initial investment and in terms of wages paid to the people working in them later on. And any water deal with Turkey would involve delivery means that are too expensive, lacking a line of non-hostile countries on land between Israel and Turkey that would agree to house a pipeline. It's all about such petty beancounter arguments, in the end. The solution will be, in the end, that the beancounters will realize that we have to construct more desalination plants - and that will be that, really. Oh, and uh #11, Observer... how shall I put this... shut up when you don't know what you're talking about, m'kay? The Golan's water supply, in case you didn't know, drains to a certain Lake - you know, it being higher ground. The sources of Lake Kinneret pass through the Golan, reaching the lake in the end. So what did Israel "steal", exactly? Do tell. And what is Israel "stealing" in the WB when the water source in question (an aquifer) is equally under the WB and Israeli land?

35. Israel to blame for West Bank water shortage
Yhonatan ,   Jerusalem   (07.01.08)
Of course Israel needs more water so as to put out fires caused by the fire bombs palestinians relentlessly throw at us.

Think there is a water shortage now? When the IAF strikes Iran, it's retaliation might be to contaminate the waters sources of the Golan heights and Lake Kinneret with... oh no... HERPES!
38. B'tselem is, of course, lying.
Jake   (07.01.08)
And its fraud must be exposed. Also, B'tselem is not an Israeli, but an Arab organization. Its entire team responsible for collection of data on the ground is PALESTINIAN. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7483172.stm "A spokesman for Israel's water supplier told Jerusalem Post that it provided 500 million cubic meters per year, which is 30% more than required under peace accords signed in the mid-1990s. He said Israel was facing water cutbacks and severe shortage itself but continued to increase supply to Palestinians in the West Bank."
39. #11 does not understand what an aquifer is
Jake   (07.01.08)
The aquifers are these channels of water that go under the ground of the West Bank and end up in Israel's coastal plain. By endlessly tapping wells into the aquifers, Palestinians actually contributed to Israel's water shortage. No doubt, when Palestinian villages will get their entire water supply from Israeli desalination plants, they will still say Israel is stealing their water ("the sea water of Gaza".)
40. Please, everyone, look at B'tselem's staff list
Jake   (07.01.08)
This is the list of names in their "Fieldwork department", responsible for collecting data on the ground: Najib Abu Rokaya, Fieldwork Director Musa Abu Hashhash, Field Researcher, Hebron District Atef Abu a-Rub, Field Researcher, Jenin District 'Issa 'Amro, Field Researcher, Hebron City Khaled 'Azayzeh, Field Researcher, The Gaza Strip Salma a-Deb'i, Field Researcher, Nablus District Iyad Hadad, Field Researcher, Ramallah District Kareem Issa Jubran, Field Researcher, East Jerusalem 'Abd al-Karim Sa'adi, Field Researcher, Qalqiliya-Tulkarm District Muhammad Sabah, Field Researcher, The Gaza Strip Suha Zeid, Field Researcher, Bethlehem District
