1. its still better than most in the western cities.
yeled ,   israel   (07.09.08)
"Life expectancy in Glasgow East is lower than the Gaza Strip" Angus Robertson MP, Good Morning Scotland, Wednesday 2 July 2008,
2. GAP?Responsibility?
Meir ,   Toronto, Canada   (07.09.08)
Mortality rates are not just a function of government policies. There is some human responsibility i.e. lifestyle choices, diet etc. Arabs must take at least some responsibility for their situation and stop pointing fingers. Furthermore, I live in Canada. The standard of living and mortality rates between non-natives and native Canadians is deplorable-much worse that the gap in Israel.
3. Sad but True
Rami ,   Nazareth, Israel   (07.09.08)
High poverty leve, high unemployment, lower standard of living, marginal governmental investment in developing infrastructure and creating job, etc.. etc.. All these are factors that play in the hands of radicals in the arab street and used by them to gain influence and support. The government needs to step in, address these issues befor the radicals get any stronger and moe influencial
4. Statistics show women live longer than men.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.09.08)
Does this mean Israeli society discriminates against men? Do Haredim live longer than secular Jews? I actually don't know but would the results prove anything? Every group in every country on earth exhibits various statistical differences - This study is pseudo-science in the pursuit of a political agenda.
5. Statistics
Arie ,   BaGolan   (07.09.08)
Does that include honour killings, murder, attempted acts of terror, and so on?
6. Infant mortality higher among Arabs due to marriage between
me ,   here   (07.09.08)
close relatives and not because of any discrimination or lower standard of living or medical care.
7. Some statistics I would like to know.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.09.08)
Wouldn't it be interesting to know how much tax revenue each sector of Israeli society contributes & compare it to the expenditures associated with that sector? What is the per capita tax revenue for Israeli Arabs & what is the per capita expenditure? Is this what you Ynet censors objected to in my other talkback where I systematically demolished this pseudo-scientific study? I guess the information would not be very PC, would it? Afraid it might wake someone up? I have to tell you, defending a position with half-truths & deception, censoring inconvenient inquiry or analysis, only proves the weakness of the fundementals behind a position.
8. So What
GABE ,   Toronto, Canada   (07.09.08)
As Meir pointed out diet and sanitary conditions as human responsibilities. But if life is so intelerable than why not leave Israel for Jordan , lets say. They can always trade down.
9. Some factors left out ?
Marcel ,   Florida   (07.09.08)
Did you factor in the 14,000 plus Hezbollah missiles aimed at Israeli Jews or the Syrian conventional, biological, chemical missiles or the Iranian or Egyptian missiles amied at Israel ?
10. If you have 10 kids, they'll live in poverty.
AK   (07.09.08)
If Arabs would choose to have one wife and 2 kids, their children wouldn't live in poverty. Then again, more than one wife and seven or eight kids with each could be a ticket to be 'officially ' poor and qualify fo public assistance.
11. Rami, why should Israeli govt invest in Arabs?
AK   (07.09.08)
Most of the Arabs refuse to Show respect for the Holocaust and refuse to celebrate israeli independence, but teach Naqba -- in reality, they are enemy in waiting. educating and feeding your enemy is not very smart. Lets see israeli Arabs show some patriotism and loyalty towards israel. Every country on earth expects loyalty from its citizens, Israel should be no exception.
12. And by the way .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.09.08)
When Ynet reports the various polls & statistical studies, not just this one, you should find someone with some expertise to present an independant & objective analysis. By not doing so, you are doing a disservice to your readers, being negligent in maintaining any journalistic standards, & acting as a propaganda outlet for those with a political agenda. While many statistical studies & epidemiological analyses reveal some remarkable relationships, this particualr study is so evidently flawed as to be without any value other than propaganda & should be presented as such.
13. #3, Christian Arabs have different stats from Moslem Arabs
Jake   (07.09.08)
in Israel. I read that Christian Arabs not only have far better statistical indicators than Moslem Arabs, they are on average better educated and have smaller families even than Jewish Israelis and are comparable in health statistics. So, is it really about discrimination? Or is it about the ability of a community to integrate?
14. Smokers? Bad drivers?
eddie ,   london   (07.09.08)
Is it possible that arabs smoke a lot more than Jewish Israelis? Or that they have more road acidents, or are killed by camels?
15. reasons for this gap
(07.09.08)
the difference is brought about by different values held by arab and jewish families. it's values, ambition, hard work incentives and values, outlook, etc... that causes this gap. one can do an exact comparrison of this situation and gap by looking at the mexican community in the usa and the "whites" in american society.
16. to Jake # 13
Rami ,   Nazareth, Israel   (07.09.08)
Jake, It is true that Muslims are partly to blame for their situation; still it does not mean there is no discrimination. The Arab sector lacks adequate infrastructure to provide a better standard of living for the community. Virtually, in every Arab locality in Israel there is a lack of schools, hospitals and medical facilities, public area, community areas, industrial zones etc.. The government needs to invest more in these areas… On the other hand, Muslims need to start having fewer kids, put more emphasis on education. Instead of raising money to build mosques where message of hate is preached, they should build schools, medicals clinics, community centers, etc..
17. to # 7: I would like ot know the same
Rami ,   Nazareth, Israel   (07.09.08)
I'm sure we will find out that Israeli-Arabs pay their share of taxes but do not get much in return
18. not a big difference
zionist forever   (07.10.08)
The headline makes it sound drastic but 4 year age difference is not that much. If we were talking 10-20 years then that would be cause for question but 4 years is not a big difference.
19. There are other differences too
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (07.10.08)
The poorest cities in Israel are Bne Brak and Jerusalem . Both have a great charidi population , also with many children , and live below the poverty line . They too choose this way of life , and you see the results . Those results , for the Arab sector , are not only caused by "discrimination" but also by their own way of life and their traditions . You can't change this in one generation . What if you compare those statistics to those of our neighbouring countries ? I think they are much better here than there .
