2. The " New ME Order" and the "Medal".
Nora ,   Tel Aviv   (07.25.08)
Iran`s Fundamentalist New Order in the ME is fast approaching. And what do we get from the US ? A medal. The US rejects the notion of opening a third front. The US is willing to defend Israel if "attacked" (Read destroyed). So what Ashkenazi has to do with this worthless medal? You say it.
3. Ihe military is not politicized and..............
Ierglib Drawde   (07.25.08)
Did I mention, I'm the tooth fairy ?
4. How many victims in one year ?...
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (07.25.08)
Over a year ago, last April, the Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Ashkenazi told the government at a cabinet meeting that "the only solution to continued Palestinian rocket fire into the western Negev is to implement a ground incursion into the Gaza Strip.” How many victims could have been saved ? However, the IDF is continuing to implement a policy of targeted airstrikes against terrorist cells and leaders in the Gaza region. Israel has not only the right, it has the duty to defend its citizens as explained at : http://xrl.us/bi5wp
5. The ribbon is not light blue, so it is not the US's highest
Rivkah   (07.25.08)
MILITARY award. It looks more like a lesser MILITARY award. The highest MILITARY award is the Congressional Medal of Honor which is a five point start attached to a light blue ribbon.
6. Quality journalism
Avi ,   hilltop, Israel   (07.25.08)
Well done, Ynet; you neglected to mention what the award is called. Just one more little piece of evidence that journalism in Israel is on the level of University newspapers in North America.
7. Iran & Iraq
Marilyn ,   USA   (07.25.08)
If we go to war again, I'm going to scream. I never did find out exactly why we went to Iraq (I heard a lot of creative excuses but none of them really made sense). This scares me for a country that takes war so seriously. We hate war and think that it is evil. Goes against Christiantiy and such. Now they want to do another preemptive strike. It's like their doing the same thing to us all over again.
8.  Un named medal
Baboo ,   US   (07.25.08)
The reporter/editor forgot to mention the medal is the Victoria Cross
9. #5 - Rivka
David ,   Jerusalem   (07.25.08)
Its the highest *service* award, not a combat award. They are technically different classes of award, though no one would dispute military glory rests in the combat awards. And besides, as nice a gesture as it is, why would he want it? He's serving his country, not the USA.
10. More than meets the eye.
petra ,   usa   (07.25.08)
Forget about the medal, wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall when 'plans' for Iran are being discussed? Plans for attacking Iran are in motion. Adios to the dwarf of tehran.
11. #9 - "why would he want it" - not the brightest of comments
redmike ,   Tel Aviv   (07.25.08)
Of course he is proud to have got the award! The importance of Israel and the US co-operating on all things military cannot be over emphasized. A friend of mine that worked on a base near to Eilat told me that they started to move some old aircraft about 100 meters to make some room and within 20 minutes the US was on the phone wanting to know what was going on. You are seemingly oblivious to this type of co-operation. Mike
12. And the award was?
robert goldman ,   Kfar Saba Israel   (07.25.08)
whom ever wrote this forgot to mention what the award was. as per the story it was the US's highest. so we have an Israeli officer with the CMH? Come on guys. learn how to research a storyt like this so we can understand what he was given ..
13. Corruption
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (07.25.08)
In my opinion, this is a cheap flattering to buy israelis into submission.Corruptors know how to act.I don't believe them and I think Israel must receive this cunning flattering in the same cunning way, and keep prepared to do whatever is in its own interests and not theirs,or in both, but just in the case it is for the good of Israel first and foremost. Foreigners have never been our true friends.Never.And olmerd has done, obediently ,their play, without trully looking for the long term interest of Israel and Jews in general.
14. The medal was probably the "Legion of Merit"
Jim   (07.25.08)
The highest US military award is the Medal of Honor, which would have been awarded by the US President, and which I think is limited to US nationals. The medal awarded in this case was probably the Legion of Merit: "It is awarded to members of the American armed forces and of friendly foreign nations who 'have distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services."
15. The Seduction of General Ashkenazi
Marcel ,   Florida   (07.25.08)
Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous Deut 16:19 This honor only muddles who General Gabi is supposed to serve 1. the U.S. Empire tasked by Satan to destroy Israel by way of their counterfeit peace. 2. or the Holy One of Israel ? Hopefully there resides a deep spirtual spark of Godly wisdom ready to ignite within him. This is how the praise of more powerful men ensnare's the less powerful rising men of power. The message is clear, Chief of Israel's Army, you owe me, ,you work for us. Hopefully the General is strong ,unlike the sock puppet's Olmert,Livni and Barak, who always ben their knee to the will of the U.S. ,always ignoring the will of God. I hope Gabe is stubbornly loyal to Israel and God, wise enough to see the gift for what it is.
16. US Medal
Gabriel ,   Edinburgh   (07.25.08)
Such a US award is demeaning for an Israeli General of Ashkanazi's stature.
17. #9 Service award, irrespective of the color
observer   (07.25.08)
#5 should have known that Ashkenazi has deserved that medal for his great services extended to the US.
18. #6 Quality Journalism
Daniel ,   NYC   (07.25.08)
I wasn't a huge fan of my own campus paper, but I must say that they were many steps above any Israeli news site I've seen. When ynet can't (or won't) even properly distringuish its news from its op-eds, that's no longer an issue of quality control, right?
19. To #9 Maybe he is serving the U.S. also?
jason white ,   afula,israel   (07.25.08)
20. #19 No!; he must have had no dual citizenship
(07.25.08)
the Us wouldn't have allowed a dual citizen to serve in the US army in the same time as he held position of a General in a foreign county; he might fled the battle field of that foreign country and told the Mossad Pollard's type of stories.
21. DISGUSTING DISHONOR TO AMERICAN SOLDIERS
Arik Silverman ,   MIlwaukee USA   (07.25.08)
What has Ashkenazi done for Americans? NOTHING. This is a truly disgusting, politically motivation degradation of the American military decoration system. But, it's not at all surprising considering Mullen said the US would support Israel for the next one thousand years.
22. Award
Joe ,   Las Vegas   (07.26.08)
This medel was likely awarded for actions that are not published or widely known. The destruction of a North Korea's nuclear facility in Syria; participation in the Columbian operation to free US hosteges are things thare are known...other things are not. Mullen would not be throwing around this kind of award for publicity or fun. Notice that there was no formal announcment, which is in keeping with the "special relationship".
23. Legion of Merit (LOM)
Captain ,   Texas   (07.26.08)
Looks like the LOM, not our "highest" military award. I can guess why it was awarded (the destruction of the Syrian nuclear facility being one reason), and I believe Israeli soldiers and citizens deserve more than medals for their sacrifice and patience while ruthlessly attacked by hate-filled Muslims. The world has a double standard when it comes to Israel. Why does the world turn a blind eye to terrorism committed against Israel until Israel retaliates? I would be proud to serve in a military exchange program with the IDF. To answer #21's question: "What has Ashkenazi done for Americans?" He leads the army that fights terrorism...a fight other world leaders are too politically correct to confront.
24. Looks like
robert goldman ,   Kfar Saba Israel   (07.26.08)
The reporter either 1 didn't get his story straight. or 2 Translator was on drugs or hate said reporter. or 3 editor is on drugs. As for the dumbass who says we have done nothing for America. get a clue ! most of the weapons upgrades for the US over the past 45 some odd yerars came from here. As for what the general did? he made things CLEARER to the blind arogent US types that think they know everything. I stll remember when a Broward county Sherrif told me that there would never be the need for Israeli style security....
