61. #54, How did you guess?
Jake   (07.31.08)
"No doubt you are one of those that refers to your wife as your property, get a life ! " Not one wife. I have fifteen. In addition, I keep a harem full of concubines. And like Qadafi, I also have an army of personal bodyguards, all female.
62. 57 Irmo: What's wrong with being like a yenta?
Rivkah   (07.31.08)
You and your Dad need a yenta. why don't you write and we can discuss it? You know my email address. Or are you a fraidy cat?
63. 58 Mikhail: Good point about the daughter being under the

father's authority having his name and taking the husband's name if she is totally commited to being under his house or authority. Many women will not say "to love, honor, and obey" in a marriage ceremony, striking the "obey" part. In ancient Rome there were two kinds of marriages for Roman citizens according to "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire". A wife could marry in a permanent ceremony and come under the total control of a husband who might become cruel at some point. OR, the wife could have a temporary marriage that had to be renewed or she went back to her father's house. A father is usually kinder to a woman than a husband is since power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
64. 60 Rina: Because she is deserving of contempt.
Rivkah   (07.31.08)
She abandoned her grandmother who bought her a house to live in so she could stay home with her children with a cosmetics business. I gave her a car because she could not afford one and did not have a credit rating high enough to borrow money to buy a car. Then when her grandmother was in an accident Eugenia refused to go see her grandmother in the hospital. Mixed race marriages and mixed race children hate people who are not mixed race, I have sadly learned. It is better to cross them off than to be their prey. I have crossed Eugenia off after she cost too much to maintain. It was her unthankfulness that was worse than the cost of helping her. She is an ungrateful lout and I hope she goes to hell when she dies. That is very likely since she believes in a polytheistic trinity and a phony sabbath of man: Sunday. Her unthankfulness is a clue she does not belong to the Lord. So I turned her over to the Lord since vengeance belongs to God for her many horrid acts toward her White relatives who helped her when her Mexican relatives did not.
65. Got it backwards.
Ahavah ,   East Coast, US   (07.31.08)
The Rabbi has it backwards - Jewishness follows the mother's side, does it not? Men should take their wives surnames. That's the logical extension of matriarchal heredity. Who cares who a man's family was? It counts for nothing in Judaism.
66. #65, you've got it backwards
Baruch ,   Boston, USA   (07.31.08)
Jewishness follows the mother's side only for confirmation of Jewishness. Upon marriage, according to Torah, a woman becomes part of her husband's family. Therefore, even though the use of a family name was not done in those times, it makes more sense, if it is done, to have a woman take her husband's name, since his family is now her family, so his family name should be her family name.
67. FALSE HEADLINE
Harry   (08.01.08)
Interesting how Ynet's headline is that Metzger says women MUST give up last name, but the article only has him saying they should "reconsider" the decision, with an acknowledgement that Jewish law does not prohibit it. So, other than anti-Jewish bias, why the incorrect use of the word "MUST"?
68. Rivkah is a messianic x-tian
Chava   (08.01.08)
69. #65 not 100% correct
Joe ,   Israel   (08.01.08)
in judaism the religion of the child follows the mother. however everything else follos the father (kohain, levi, yisrael, which tribe, etc)
70. Metzger is Out of His Depth
Jay A Friedman ,   Ra'anana ISRAEL   (08.01.08)
Metzger should speak only about areas of his expertise - such as getting freebies and other payments. Pirkei Avot tells us "Asei Lecha Rav". Metzger does not even qualify for consideration. We are to blame - we became a single issue society - lost voters' support and allowed the Charedim to dominate religious issues in the Knesset . Thus, we are no longer a presence in the the Rabbnut Rashit. It's time to ignore Metzger and his leaders. It's time to go back to the original ideology of zionut datit.
71. Gabriela, my dear
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (08.01.08)
You read me wrong. It is the Goyim who consider "cheating" a mere mistake; something which can simply be corrected with an "I'm sorry" and bit of "remorse". PS - Don't pity my mrs. She is very happy and a great gal.
72. Yes to Maiden Names
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.02.08)
I'll give an example . A woman , Levy studies , and becomes a lawyer . Is known unther this name . She marries Mr Baruch , a new name . After some years , divorce , again a name change . She finds another man , Mr X . new name . But he dies . Again a change in her name . When conserving her maiden name , no problem at all . She can be Mrs Levy , wife of X . And don't take attention at this rivka , an abused woman without any self esteem for staying with her abusing man [ she wrote it ! ]
73. maiden name
karen isaac ,   exeter uk   (10.10.08)
In order to preserve unity why not the man change his name? Isn't judaism passed down through the female?
