magi ,   jerusalem   (08.17.08)
but in the state the size of the state ..befor 5 years potin was in israil .. israil complains of russian weapons that they export to arabs mainly seria .. it is complains no more ... but russia do not complane of israili weapons in gorgia .. but it does what it wants to say ... evry one must know his size .. and the rule will be as the size of any state
2. were any 'classified' secrets sold?
redmike ,   Tel Aviv   (08.17.08)
I normally like Yair Lapid's articles but this one was quickly knocked out and has little real substance or information. Are ex IDF members selling classified information or not? If somebody serves in the IDF and after leaving it wants to make a living from selling the experience he gained then what is the problem? One can try to make this sound nasty as Yair Lapid does but if they simply sell their experience and non-classified information then they simply do what every non-IDF person does when he takes a job. Are ex-IDF people simply supposed to exist on their pensions? What do Barak and others do when they give highly paid lectures on defense? Mike
3. The sin of omission in Israeli law
Sheila ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.17.08)
This is a serious omission in Israeli law, although the officers response was most disconcerting! I believe that this omission must be filled and that a campaign to prevent IDF officers selling our most important asset, our knowledge, is essential. We are defenders not mercenaries.
4. Why does Hirsch have IDF info after he leaves?
Laura ,   Israel   (08.17.08)
Everyone in the business world knows that you are forbidden to take trade secrets and confidential material with you when you leave a company. So why was confidential IDF material in Gal Hirsch's possession after he left the IDF? Why are Sayeret officers so clueless? They hold Israel's combat secrets in their hands, for goodness' sake! This demands a serious, high-level investigation. The implications are ominous.
5. Selling our experience...
(08.17.08)
Because we are Israel, because everyone is searching dilligently for our achilles heel, because everyone wants to wipe us off the map, gas us in ovens, drive us into the sea, blow us off the face of the earth, selling our know-how, which took 60 years to develope to protect us from our senseless destroyers will probably rear up and bite us on the butt one day. Because of money, our own weapons and techniques will be turned on us and destroy us.
6. secret information
sad ,   israel   (08.17.08)
for money anyone in the defense ministry will approve it to "leave" the country. it's not the first time.
7. # 1 - U need a good English teacher ...
English teacher   (08.17.08)
Anyway, keep writing to practice !
8. differentiation is needed
patriot   (08.17.08)
Selling weapons - maybe yes, BUT teaching military strategies & tactical methos - NO - big time !
9. all of this guys should be sued as traitors..
peter ,   Zurich/Tel Aviv   (08.17.08)
in most states it is strictly forbidden to serve in foreign armies. That includes any services provided to a foreign country without the goverments approval. All of this ex-IDF officers are just mercenaries which do the most worse damage to Israels image worldwide not to talk about the damage from exporting IDF's military doctrins and special tactical skills. The pension that they get is still above of many families monthly budgets. It was their free will to make career within the army rather then a civil career. Anyone who sells confident army knowledge is a traitor and should be treated as a traitor and jailed just as Vanunu. In wartime such people are just shot on the spot and Israel is since 60 years in kind of a defensiv high alert.
10. This happened when
see&see   (08.17.08)
This happened when the people belong to the army and not the opposite. This happened when the people belong to the government and not the opposite. This happened when the people belong to the legislature and not the opposite. This happened when the people belong to the media and not the opposite. This happened when the people belong to the judiciary and not the opposite And so on and so on…
11. Lapid is right for once!
jason white ,   afula,israel   (08.17.08)
We must make sure that all the knowledge from the I.D.F. is not sold. We also sell too many hi tech weapons all over the world.
12. # 7 to # 1 English teacher er hmm,

16. #7 - "Anyway, keep writing to prctice !" - yuk
redmike ,   Tel Aviv   (08.17.08)
I am a native speaker from the UK and I lived for 14 years in the US and would never say "Anyway, keep writing to practice !". Who speaks or writes like that? And how petty! Your post is not in context and it would seem that you don't have enough students which is understandable and also fortunate for people that want to learn English. For your own good, 'get a life'. Oh, and I am a qualified EFL teacher. Mike
17. A GOOD JEW HAS TO BE OPTIMISTIC ! (BUT FOR HOW LONG?)
ROLAND SEENER ,   LONDON ENGLAND   (08.17.08)
18. IDT officers 'selling' expertise
DR ,   Hebron   (08.17.08)
The article Wrong kind of exports by Lapid was nothing short of dis-information based on massive ignorance. Hizbolla setting up an OP and observing an IDF former whatever training Georgians and using that information against the IDF...oh come on, they can get i free from the Palestinians working in, and/or near any IDF training base and even more up to date.
19. Yair Lapid NOT a military expert !
Moshe ,   kiryat bialik   (08.17.08)
UNbeleivable ! Yair Lapid has NO expertise or experience in military matters ! ... a ZERO in technological matters !... yet Yair Lapid finds fault in Israeli veterans: they sell " IDF techniques and training methods " ! ? ? Do you really think that Israel is the only source of technology ? ...Russia, China, North Korea, even Iran are always ready to take on the " business " ...how to build homemade weapons both cheap ,crude and DEADLY ... OR sophisticated, very expensive, and DEADLY >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TRAINING: Israeli ground troops knew that "home" depended upon their performance...the Israeli troops of Leb II fought in spite of NO infantry training ...NO ground command strategy... That determination does not come from "training" ...it comes from each soldiers gut... from their ... kishkas. moshe
20. Responsible Reporting.
EM ,   Ra'anana   (08.17.08)
If the IDF's performance during the 2nd Lebanese war is an indication of Hirsh's "secrets" ...then Lapid shouldn't be worried. What is worrisome, is suggesting that Hirsh is betraying the IDF (and Israel). Does Yair Lapid have proof that Hirsh is revealing top secret military tactics? Or is the vision of Shiites sitting on hills watching a former IDF officer share classified info...a nice subject for an article. Being privy to classified infomation, does not mean Hirsh will share it. Maybe Yair Lapid is right...or maybe he just a wee bit envious that one of his former schoolmates found a second job that pays a lot more than Bank Hapoalim.
21. Wrong kind of - Opinion by Ariel Ben Yochanan
Ariel Ben Yochanan ,   Kfar Tapuah   (08.17.08)
Wrong kind of - Opinion by Ariel Ben Yochanan The opinion that Israel is strong because of the IDF and its tactics and its inner workings is the one held by the military and security establishment but it does not necessarily mean it has anything to do with reality. History in fact have shown us many mighty empires perish, yet the Jews remained. So, it is reasonable to say that it is Hashem and His will that has an effect on Jewish history, strength and survival, not military know-how. Yair Lapid, if you want to believe in a G-dless universe, in purposeless life on Earth, it's up to you. But publicizing this senseless opinion on an Internet site like ynetnews.com, is nothing short of Chilul Hashem: We are strong and we are in Eretz Yisrael because of Hashem, not because of the IDF!
22. A few remarks
Andy ,   Not there   (08.17.08)
to show how little brain is under this fancy haircut of yours, Yair. 1. Azerbaijan is a friendly country, actually selling oil to Israel; 2. Georgians are Orthodox Christians (exactly as are Russians, btw), who survived few hundred years of Moslem domination; 3. What does it matter if the country has some "extravagant" neighbours - look at your own backyard: all sorts of unfriendly Arabs are lurking there; 4. If Hezbolla wants to know the secrets of IDF they don't have to ask Azeris to spy for them - It is way to complicated. They can put a call through to Ehud Barak, who, while escaping Lebanon left behind lots of ammo, machinery and some computers still running. 5.Bottom line: Don't know what to write about - pick weather, for example.

24. India and Israel

According to an article in the latest issue of the Times of India (available on the net) this year India is buying eight billion US dollars of military equipment from Israel. Pass the chutney.
25. Correct for the Wrong Reasons
Joe America ,   NYC, USA   (08.18.08)
The author of this piece makes me laugh. Amazing how that "qualitative advantage" worked out last week when the Georgians cut and ran after carrying out a mass murder. Sounds like the Israeli doctrine from the 2006 war crimes committed against Lebanon. Israeli racists, go back home. End your stupid colonial adventure.
