1. the line between imams and rabbis continues to blur
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (08.19.08)
i just love the situational ethics these guys and their islamic counterparts promote. the ends always justifies the means, right? here, two wrongs DO make a right. it seems they believe it is up to them to save the jewish race because god is apparently incapable of keeping his promises without their interference. what a mighty god they serve.
2. heres some advise to the "Gentelman" in question
Simon ,   TA the free city   (08.19.08)
How about sticking your biggoted nose someplace else and minding your own business. We all have free will and if this guy is religious then he will realize that Ha-shem is the true judge and not hos so called friend. My advise to the couple would be , get married in Cyprus and have a wonderful and happy life together and dump this so called friend for starters.
3. Get your dirty nose out of your buddys business!

4. hmmmmm.......whatever

5. She cheated to enter Israel, no ethics, report her.
Bunnie Meyer ,   Los Angeles, CA USA   (08.19.08)
She wants all the benefits and has no entitlement. She is willing to lie to immigration, so she will lie to him. A relationship based on fraud is no relationship, just look at olmert.
6. Thanks friend
Aharon ,   givat shmuel, Israel   (08.19.08)
& Thank you Rav Melamed for following Halacha instead of the Goy values that have infected so many Jews.
7. Secret Police
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (08.19.08)
Is this for real. Do the means justify the end? These rabbis are creating a new form of Judaism modeled on Islam. They are the minority, but what's frightening is that they have a following of thousands.
8. Rav Melamed is absolutely right
YOEL ,   Israel   (08.19.08)
This rabbi is respectable, and he had to answer to a hard question. He had in mind many tragedies, when people get married, and problems concerning divorce occurs after many years... It's in his role to prevent jewish people from denying Judaism by mixed mariages. He maybe also had in mind the case of that woman who's conversion was cancelled... What about children who feel uprooted while they discover they're neither jews, nore christians. There are so many pretty girls in Israel !! What the hell that need of looking for someone abroad, and even cheating at the Interior Ministry? I feel obliged to be aside to Rav Melamed. After all, he just gave an advice. The guy who asked that question is free following or ignoring this advice. This is our basis in Judaism: everybody is responsible for what he does. Please, stop giving lessons to anyone. Even the Rav has the right of speech freedom. This means that even if he claimed stupid things, he is free because we live in a democratic country.
9. I want to report Ruth
Ivan the Informer ,   Israel   (08.19.08)
She claims she's here temporarily but flirts with Boaz during gleaning, it's even rumoured she's slept at his feet at night. She's a gentile and needs to be removed by the Authorities. Ivan the Informer.
10. # 6 Ahron - Goy values ?
Simon ,   TA the free city   (08.19.08)
Goy values, well at least that dose`nt include, You should check at home first before issuing racist statements, maybe you mean the light unto all nations which according to the chariddem include: throwing acid in a young girls face not working, not paying taxes, living off my tax money, not serving in the army, breaking into a single womans apartment and beating her senseless, vandalizing a shop for selling MPV3 players, it seems you do`nt know the meaning of the word "values"
11. Embrassment for religious Zionism!
Jerusalemite   (08.19.08)
I can't believe that these rabbis are so narrow minded! How come that everyone forgot that all our foremothers were gentiles?! And other promiment women, such as Ruth (the grandmother of Kind David!!!) as well! Besides, the psychological skills of this rabbi seems to be somewhat non-existant. If this woman will be deported then I'm sure that this young man won't leave it this way, he will probably leave the country and we'll have another frustrated "yored" - that's not what we want and need!
12. I worked with a guy that married and brought
jason white ,   afula,israel   (08.19.08)
over two gentile women. They both live in Israel. He divorced the first and then went back to the F.S.U. and married the second time.
13. The Israeli dude should just move to Brazil.
anti-intermarriage   (08.19.08)
Problem solved. He'll be able to legally marry his non-Jewish girlfriend and raise non-Jewish children. Jews who intermarry don't care about their Jewish heritage, or having Jewish children, so what's the point in having their non-Jewish spouses undergo phony conversions?
14. King David would not have been born if Rahab the
Rivkah   (08.19.08)
innkeeper who was not descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had not married into the holy line. She was a Gentile. King David would not have been born if the widow Ruth had not followed her mother-in-law Naomi back to Israel to marry Boaz, the father of Jesse, the father of King David. So genuine conversion marriages are allowed by the Lord into the holy line. But unconverted Gentiles such as Esau's two wives did not bless Esau's line and were a continual grief to Esau's mother Rebecca. There have to be exceptions, but not often. It is a great responsibility to maintain a holy line. God sees children through the faith of the parents. For a child to be born holy, at least one of the parents must be a believer. Most people think holiness is from legal marriages, but many legal marriages are adulterous. God is a peculiar God and His ways need to be the way of His children.
15. Conversions
Miriam ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.08)
I alone know of similar cases where the conversions were not because of the reasons they should be for. So many people convert who have no intention of observing even the basic mitzvot such as Shabbat, Kashrut, and Family Purity.
16. it sounds to me like this "good friend"
JL ,   israel   (08.19.08)
is in the closet and cannot bear for his friend to find happiness with a woman and not where this "friend" thinks he should be...mainly by his side..."friend"...get a life with some other guy
17. What an asshole
Awake   (08.19.08)
18. Most of our female ancestors
Rina   (08.19.08)
were non-Jewish woment who married Jewish men. The field of Genetics has shed light on this. Jewish males have more in common with each other on the Y DNA than Jewish women on the female DNA, pardon my inarticulateness, which explains why most Jews look more physically similar to their former "host" countries, than to their fellow Jews from other "host" countries.
19. I am in shock by the response!
Yosef ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.08)
we are talking about INTERMARRIAGE! we are not talking about keeping shabbat. if you don't believe that jews should marry jews then what are you doing in Israel? you obviously don't believe in the torah so what right do you have to the land that you stole from arabs go back to Germany and marry a shiksa we dont need any more goyim living here
20. Snitching on your friends and neighbors
Roxy ,   Israel   (08.19.08)
Is never a good idea! Where are we living,Communist Russia under the KGB, or Germany during WWII? In both cases people were urged to spy on their friends, neighbors and even family members incase they were doing something that the governments did not approve of> In Germany's case children were urged to spy on their parents, teachers, neighbors etc. we all know what that led to! In Russia under Stalin people were encouraged to spy on neighbors and report any anti gov. feelings, you know where that led to(death and being sent to Siberia). Is this what we want in this DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY CALLED ISRAEL? Do you want people telling you whom to fall in love with? Next it will be spying on those who don't observe the Sabbath and reporting them, this is going towards going down a slippery slope so to speak, do you really want to give up your rights as a human being? BIG BROTHER is dangerous, and slowly eats away your civil liberties like in George Orwell's book 1984! Be ware of Big Brother and informing on others!
21. If the law does not provide for her to stay
Harry   (08.19.08)
Why are some TB complaining that she should stay ??? Is it because the religious perspective and the words of the Rabbi is involved ??? It is time to see we can only survive because we are under the watchfull Eye Of Hashem. We ought to embrace rather then throw away religion.
22. Instead of chasing these people away embrace them and...
Ben ,   Boston, US   (08.19.08)
show them why they should convert to Judaism. With intermarriage in the states at an all time high, maybe just maybe, the rabbonim need to chart a different course in bringing these people to Judaism through halachic means. Or maybe just maybe, we as Jews need to better educate our children of the pitfalls and dangers of intermarriage.
23. One begins to wonder if all the orthodox are idiots
Sidney ,   USA   (08.19.08)
24. And I am shocked, Yosef, #19...
John ,   Europe   (08.19.08)
...by your attitude: marrying a Jew and keeping shabat falls in the same cathegory! If you respect halaha, and if it means something to you, you will do BOTH - keep shabbes and marry a Jew. If you don't, then none of the halaha rules are meaning to you - you will not keep shabes nor will you marry a Jew. So to say "hey, we are not talking here about shabbat, we are talking about race!" is very rasistic attitude: marrying a jew has a meaning ONLY if you respect halaha and if you keep shabbos. If you are secular, that all has no meaning.
25. Dangerous
Sara ,   USA   (08.19.08)
Obviously, if the friend is choosing to marry a non-Jew, he believes in doing so, so give the guy some autonomy! I can't imagine hearing this story if the roles were reversed. How would it look to the ones protesting such a relationship if a Christian was told to spy on his friend and report his Jewish girlfriend considering converting and moving to the U.S.? Does the Jewish religion give any credit to one's ability to make life choices on their own? If you're really his friend, respect his choices. If he makes a mistake, he will need to figure that out on his own. If he doesn't--then wish him and his girlfriend/wife all the best.
26. sad commentary on religious life
John ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.08)
Perhaps the rabbi could compare the potentially "destructive" relationship of marrying a gentile to the Jewish divorce rates here in Israel, the number of spousal abuse cases by so-called religious husbands, and so on before making such blanket statements. He also just basically said that marriage isn't about love; how sad. That pretty much sums up strict Orthodox way of life: isolated, loveless, and distrustful of others. If that's the kind of life he wants, then bevakasha. But in doing all that in the name of religion, does he really think that in the end God will pprove and be happy of such behaviour?
27. #7 Response
Yitzchak ,   Yerushalyim   (08.19.08)
The problem is that so many jews have English democratic view and have no idea what was normal in Jewish history. The Rav's advice is correct. I write this as convert in the process (male).
28. #8...u are dead wrong...and so is this rabbi
Dan ,   Israel   (08.19.08)
how can u possibly the rabbi had in mind many tragedies concerning subsequent divorces. he doesnt know this couple from a whole in the wall. the case of a women whos conversion was canceled?? are u kidding me?? the children who feel uprooted bc of their conflicting religious identities?? this is bunk, and appallingly lame excuses for trying to ruin this poor guys life. it is none of the rabbis business to interfere nor the friends. how can u say that bc there are so many pretty girls in israel he shouldnt be looking abroad. seriously this is the dumbest statement ever. he fell in love with her, it doesnt matter how many pretty girls there are in israel. now ur quip that the rabbi just gave advice and the friend can choose to take it or leave it is bullcrap and u know it. when a big rabbi gives a VERDICT haredi and religious jews FOLLOW it. the article itself states that the rabbi RULED on the issue. this is absolutely not an issue of free speech, and the irony of u spouting how we live in a democratic country after u blindly support a senile old man to arbitrarily judge someones life hes never met and to ruin it, reveals u for the haredi slave u really are.
29. How about informing on child molesters?
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.19.08)
