31. Re: #2
Y. ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.08)
WELL SAID! I couldn't have phrased it better.
32. and then he'll whine about anti-semitism about something
andrew ,   miami,fl   (08.19.08)
33. The fundamentalist advisors
yehudi ,   palestine   (08.19.08)
They can advice on everything, beside one thing: To be a nice person and to respect others. Nobody of our Guru's respect human dignity and democracy. Their Iran colleagues are the role models and subject of envy. The ultra-doxies in Israel are working hard to delegitimize real Jewish values.
34. Joseph and Moses married non-news they found abroad
Abe Froman ,   NY, NY   (08.19.08)
And probably converted. Would their situations be reported to Misrad Ha'Panim today? Careful who you judge.
35. I wonder, no racist slurs but OK with racist opinion?
Yon ,   Haifa, israel   (08.19.08)
I am afraid that the rabbi's opinion sounds as racist and obscurantic. I feel shame reading this! And those are the nation's spiritual leaders? Indeed!
36. If you can't find a wife locally, this is ok.
David ,   Hartford USA   (08.19.08)
Does this rabbi know the future? Can he see this possible marriage failing on a certain date? Maybe the woman will convert. Maybe from her the messiah will come. Rabbis should stay in the synagogue. As for the 'friend' who wants to break the couple up: you will lose a close friend for your efforts. Instead of being holier-than-thou, help the woman to realize that converting will create a stronger bond between them. What G-d has ordained, let no 'friend' put asunder. Now get your nose out of your friend's private life, and be his friend. That means be supportive of the two and work towards helping the woman to become a Jew. Maybe you don't know it, but our doors are always open. As for this misguided rabbi- time to retire.
37. and you missed the point john #24
Yosef ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.08)
what you didn't understand is that i was not referring to Torah values or halacha, i was referring to the religious bashing that is going on for somebody trying to protect the Jewish people from intermarriage . since when do 2 wrongs make a right. just because your not doing one thing doesn't mean you cant do others there is no contradiction, every action stands on its own regardless if you kept Sabbat last week b/c we live in the moment. i just think that it should be obvious to all, religious or not, that being a Jew has more meaning then just following Halacha. its who we are as a people! if not then everybody that's tried to wipe us out in the last 3500 years has won! you ignored my last part of the comment which is if you don't believe in the Torah then what are you doing in Israel! you have no more right to it then the Arabs that claim we stole it from them so if you don't like the "religious" then leave nobody is forcing you to live here! move to Syria, oh right they don't allow Jews there!
38. #2Why is it you now believe in Hashem when pointing out
Shlomo ,   Petah Tivka   (08.19.08)
this Rav's point of view, yet you reject his very existance when it comes to Hashem exposing your own wrong way of living? Tad bit hypocritical don't you think? I have found over the years that those who have the loudest mouths on a subject are those that usually have the most to hide. Hashem's mercy can and will cover this Rav's way of thinking if it is wrong because his heart really is to please Hashem. But when ones heart is to go beyond the boundaries of moral law that Hashem has set in place, then you always will run up against his mercy before you run up against his judgement. But as you continue to use your free will to go against what Hashem has said is immoral, then you will run head strong past his mercy and right into his judgement. And it will be your own free will that chose to do it. So please, before you crucify this Rav with your words, do a little bit of reflecting on your own life and if you are squeaky clean and have zero faults by Hashems word, then by all means you should be known as the soon coming Mashiach.
39. #14 Very will written Rivka. One of your best yet!
Jan ,   Michigan   (08.19.08)
40. Why does she even need to convert?
Avi   (08.19.08)
Firstly, the guy can afford to travel to Brazil. In that case, then if he really wants to wed this woman, then go to Cyprus and get married. Hopefully, he's had a good talk with her as to the character of Israel and what it means to be living there. Otherwise, I might agree with some of the other TB's who say that the man should pack up for Brazil. One question though: What's wrong with Israeli women? They're not ugly, and what's better is they understand and know of Jewish customs and vaules. To each his own.
41. go deeper in the archives
davidhasday ,   new york usa   (08.19.08)
bs"d That responsa was given 3 years ago. Somebody at Yedifart ahronot woke up and got enlighted with an archeological desire. Anything is acceptable for ultra-secular loosers as long as it is against Torah ad Gedolim.
42. Baruch Hashem
Zahava ,   Brooklyn   (08.19.08)
The rabbi speaks truth.
43. What we need to do is strip the power from the Rabbinute

46. comparing taliban to rabbis
izzy d   (08.20.08)
Reveals a painful ignorance of either cultures also a lack of common sense and logic. i am surprised that the comparison can be formulated at all using words and not baby gurgles.
47. Thanks Rabbi..
Simon ,   Malha   (08.20.08)
The Rabbi must also state the Jewish men can marry Jewish men, as long as the partner is Jewish.. and if you need justitification.. look in the most religious community and hey presto... gay men living in closeted prision.. its time for freedom as long as their jewish!
48. #29: Many prominent rabbis from the national religious camp
Jay ,   Jerusalem   (08.20.08)
have ruled that there is an absolute obligation to report even the suspicion of child molestation to the police.
49. intermarriage
johan ,   South Africa   (08.20.08)
it seems that the message here is: it is a great hillul hashem, a shonda and a disgrace for a jewish man to marry a goya. on the other hand, there is no problem, it is perfectly acceptable, no-one really objects should a jewish woman marry a non-jewish man! whatever happened to the prohibitions to giving your daughters to the "uncircumcized"? it is blind, cruel and at odds with the wisdom we received from sinai to obstruct the conversion of women who want to marry jewish men. this brazilian woman showed her dedication - she was willing to move to israel and change her religion for her husband. who is this holdover from the polish ghetto to deny the man his right to choose a good woman? of course there are a lot of beautiful women to choose from in israel, but the gentleman here chose a woman from brazil - why not help facilitate this choice? in other news, you may be aware that continual endogamy (in-marriage) particularly for ashkenazi-ashkenazi couples, or sephardi-sephardi couples can result in several genetic disorders such as gauchers disease, tay-sachs, crohn's disease, creutzfeld jacob and others. therefore, adding some genetic diversity to the population will actually strengthen us, despite what the rabbis say!
50. #34, abe froman is from chicago, did you move?
j ,   nj   (08.20.08)
51. One wonders whether all secular liberals are idiots.
anti-intermarriage ,   USA   (08.20.08)
Sounds like Sydney and the rest of the naysayers are idiots and ignorant about Judaism.
52. 39 Jan: thank you. 44: DACON9: I celebrate a Friday evening
Rivkah   (08.20.08)
to Saturday evening Shabbat at home and get books and lectures by mail order from many sources like Rabbi Michael Rood, as well as email essays.
53. "Informing"
Robert ,   Singapore   (08.20.08)
Perhaps the good Rabbi could clear up a point of uncertainty. After betraying your friend to the authorities, do you still get paid thirty pieces of silver?
54. anything goes
ouiser   (08.20.08)
a "goy" is not allowed to touch - let alone open a wine bottle righteous Jews will be drinking from... but if that 'goy" pays enough he will be given the torah scrolls to embrace and schlepp all over the place - been there, seen that!
55. Children should be taught to report on parents.
Chanalau, Tova ,   London, UK   (08.20.08)
Exoerience gained by specialists in the KGB and the STASI should be drawn upon and used by our own secret services to ensure that no anti-state views are expressed in the home. Jewish Youth is our secret weapon. Any doubts about parental enthusiasm for the national-religious camp, any off-message hints and insinuations, should be passed on to the rabbinate in a text message immediately
56. #47, Yeah about that Simon, That's just so not gonna happen.
Go live that life in ,   Tehran. Shlomo   (08.20.08)
57. #55,If only the parents of Hammaad Munshi from your country
had done what you ,   suggest hey? Rueben   (08.20.08)
58. this touches on conversion
tom ,   toronto, canada   (08.20.08)
this touches on conversion much more than intermarriage. in spite of all the halakhic arguments it boils down to the fact that the learned rabbi does not trust that this woman will convert properly. does he have any special foreknowledge of the future? or does he simply invalidate any and all conversions by all batei din (including israel)? because unless the young man is a kohen, there is NO basis for him not marry a convert, or in fact, halakhically any excuse for discriminating against converts whatsoever. but instead of advising the person to be careful to ensure that this woman converts properly and sincerely, he recommends using deceit and force to separate them, and prevent the formation of a family in israel, for an apparently political agenda having nothing to do with the individuals in question. this is a perversion of torah.
59. # 28 , Dan...
Yoel   (08.20.08)
I respect this rabbi, even if he said the opposit of what I think (Parashat Shoftim orders it). I'm Dati,... Whatever I think, you are opposed. So, unnecessary to argue with you. Read other posters, and bark at them, I really don't care. You are one of those people contaminated by ideas from abroad, thinking you are right because you're open-minded. I just wish you to meet with antisemits, the only way to remind you your jewish roots. Very sorry for you. Barking towards people will never creates dialog.
60. Send her Back!
Ely ,   Pardes Chana   (08.22.08)
Jew's are to marry Jew's! When it comes to converting we have Rabbinical Court's. My only complaint is people telling us from Chutz Laeretz there is no problem with marring a gentile! Make Aliyah and learn what real Judaism is all about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
