1. Truth about Iran
Jim ,   NYC   (08.18.08)
Iran has never invaded any country in its modern history. And the argument that they might pass nuclear weapons to Hezbollah or other groups holds no water. Iran has chemical weapons already and they could have transferred them to Hezbollah but did not. Seems to me the only one's that are worried are the aggressive war mongering states.
2. Not so sure
Marcelo ,   Frankfurt   (08.18.08)
Iran is the whole problem, so without Iran at all the "huge monster" can disapear. It can happen not with a single air attack, but with many....or a couple of single detonations. The would would be nicer, cleaner and happier.
3. Astounding negligence to get to this point
Laura ,   Israel   (08.18.08)
We all know that the UN and its toothless nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, would never have done anything. But a "Coalition of the Willing" could have removed the evil, genocidal Iranian regime long before it came to this. Just as Hitler could have been removed (and everyone laughed because they thought he was just crazy and a buffoon), so too A-jad (who is also pegged as loony and a fool) and his dangerous Ayatollahs could have been removed from power long ago. But what happens now? Do we just stare blankly, helpless and vulnerable, like a deer caught in the headlights, like the Jews of Europe and the Balkans during WWII? Or do we find a way beyond the endless stretches of mindless and hopeless "negotiations" and actually DO something before our worst nightmare occurs again, a mere 60 years after another horrific "nightmare". We have to understand that governments, especially the Israeli one (which is not generally given to rational, intelligent thought -though they did well with the Syrian strike last year), must decide what is worse for our lives and the lives of our children: To wait in fear for the nuclear bomb to drop on us or to take a chance and try to do what no one did 60 years ago.
4. Iran Attack
Paul Rose ,   Palos Heights, IL US   (08.18.08)
Fishman, you are a typical defeatist. It is not necessary to demolish the entire infrastructure in order to cripple the process.
5. Iran strike (not) an option
I.Kemp ,   Nahariya Israel   (08.18.08)
Fishman has been smoking the "no -can- do plants " again. What he fails to realise is that you do not have to deal with all the nuclear "tentacles" but 3 key plants. Total elimination was never an option but delaying the programe , is and should be done and is fully realisable . If we fail to do so the cost will be incalculable.
6. HYSTERIA OR PEACE
JOHN ISH ISHMAEL ,   TORONTO CANADA   (08.18.08)
Good analysis, Alex Fishman, but hysterial conclusion:- "This time around, we are dealing with a monster being built before our eyes and the eyes of the world." The "monster" is better defined by an agressive, messianic country that has 1200 nukes and thousands of tons of Bio Horrow WMDs. Iran should be viewed as a possible trade partner for Israel. First, however, Peace rather than "Piece"
7. This was my argument in 1936 - Already too late to stop them
Neville Chamberlain ,   London UK   (08.18.08)
8. Yet the muslim world continues to be educated in the best
rachel ,   usa   (08.18.08)
american universities .....
9. Yet another instance of jewish inferiority complex
Moshe   (08.18.08)
10. Iran thanks you Jimmy Carter. Just look what you have
brought to pass ,   today. Putz!   (08.18.08)
11. Any Attack On Iran Will Only Strengthen Their Resolve
World Citizen ,   the world   (08.18.08)
to having nuclear power and possibly even a nuclear weapon. Israeli citizens must to come to grips with the new realities on the ground. If you do not reign in the paranoid warmongers in your society Israel as a nation is doomed. Your bellicose sabre rattling is spooking even American government. If your government were to be so foolish as to launch an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the American assisted the Iranians and the Russians in stopping it by whatever means neccessary. This might include US aircraft shooting down IAF planes crossing Iraqi airspace. Henry Kissinger once said and I quote; "Superpowers don't commit suicide for their allies." Do Israelis really believe the United States will start a nuclear WW3 over Israel? It is time for careful reflection on the issue of attacking Iran.
12. The Alternative is Holcocaust
Brod ,   USA   (08.18.08)
Of course, there is an option of eradicating the Holocaust threat. Despite the challenges and the boastings by the Ayatollahists, it does not mean they are not surmountable. Islamist-Jihadists are known for their blusters. And when they get the pie of their blusters, they run like chicken. Nukes in the hands of fanatical Islamist-Jihadist thugs, entities, states and regimes is a thousand times worst than Hiroshima.
13. Strike not an option? It's the ONLY option!!
Rueben ,   Israel   (08.18.08)
14. Iran Strike
Thomas ,   Cleveland   (08.18.08)
What people dont see is that not all of the Iranian facilities need to be destroyed. Two or three significant targets would but the nuclear program on ice for years or maybe permanantly.
15. THE DILEMMA THAT COULD BE VERY COSTLY
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (08.18.08)
All that Alex has done is to have accumulated all the present information on Iranian Nuclear industry.Bent upon planning to destroy the facilities has become order of the day but the costs in terms of retaliation and subsequent Iranian attitude will be fairly strong. To assume that Iran will not go for Nuclear weapons AFTER the so-called raids on its known facilities is a silly thing to do.It is but obvious that a very very hard choice has to be made.Known to have stockpile of deadly chemical weapons,Iran has so far refrained from giving the same to either Hizbullah or Hamas. Will the same apply in case of it becoming Nuclear? Very easy to cause uproar in the talk-back that the world would not allow Iran to have this or that. When it comes to the crunch,Iranians are no fools to give in that easily.Their problems with USA and its sanctions, attempts by USA to influence dissident groups in Iran and other activities by the CIA has taught the Iranians also to play their cards with dilligence.
16. So what does Mr Sherman recommend?
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (08.18.08)
Sit & wait, hope for the best? Sorry, I can't swallow that one. There is always a way, it just depends how ruthless you can be. In these circumstances, I don't think there is a limit. Whatever we have to do, with whatever means necessary, then that's what we must do. And just as an observation, it seems to me that whatever the situation, Israeli politicians, journalists, military experts, & academics always seem to advise doing nothing, waiting, inaction. This paralysis has become a sickness, hopefully not a terminal one yet.
17. Nukes in the wrong hands is not an option
Brod ,   USA   (08.18.08)
Nukes in the hands of fanatical, cultic Islamist-Jihadists/states is not an option.
18. We need missile defense
daniel   (08.18.08)
Let's hope the Americans manage to finish their missile defense on time. Or else it's mushroomcloud for us.
19. Alex Fishman
Jonny Guitar Slinger ,   Toronto Canada   (08.18.08)
Alex Fishmans article is suggesting Iran to be a great modern country capable of similar military might to Israel's or, according to this article, even the united states. Alex Fishman is a appeaser and is intellectually equal to the likes of Michael Moore and other loonies. You are a pathetic man if you are advising us to just 'stand' and watch this Iranian 'monster' be built ... action speaks more than pathetic appeasement letters and international pressure, the Iranians have already proven that they don't care what the world has to say. You might as well join the Ayatola and his cronnies for the new Iranian dominated century ... *snap back to reality* Iran is getting all giddy on their 'new' technological development ... the developments Iran is reaching now are what the USA and Israel did well before the 70's ... all you have to do is a press the red button and watch the Iranians scurry around in their pathetic country
20. To All: Israeli-US Nukes Can Do the Job
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (08.18.08)
What all you posters are forgetting is the obvious: Israel does have a missile defense, and is acquiring additional technology. That said, what about Israel's offensive ability, coupled with it's defense? The mullahs in Iran are well aware of Israel's 200 (some say 400) nukes, on Jerichos, subs, planes and fired form artillery, not to mention cells armed with components in Iran itself. Some former US generals surmise Iran will lose 30m people in 3 weeks, Syria 15m, if Israel uses all it's potential. Are they willing to disappear as nations..just to kill or wound 1m Jews? That is really the million dollar question. My guess, NO. Re: Hitler, had the West developed it's nukes sooner, the war would have ended in 1941. A few bombs on Berlin, etc. was all that was needed. A combined Israeli-US strike on those 3 plants, (using nukes), fired from B1s or Persian Gulf ships would suffice temporarily. It's really a matter of "Guts" and resolve..
21. Germany and Japan couldn't be stopped either!
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (08.18.08)
Couldn't isn't in the vocabulary. "Get er Done" will be the leftovers of smoke and destruction. Divine Strake and Stealth Bombers. Iran's facilities will go bye, bye. If there's a will to stop them.....then there is a way to stop them. Don't take over a sports team.....You'll never take the field. You'll be to convinced you are going to lose.....so your team will never take the field.
22. 11# You have been snorting to much coke.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (08.18.08)
The United States wants Iran bombed as much as the Israeli's. Bush is waiting for the election results on November 2nd. Then it's bombs away. We haven't forgotten the Beirut bombing or the hostage crisis. Iran is on our dung list, and will stay their for many years to come.
23. All that is needed here is a whistle.
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (08.18.08)
To start the game. Anything else is just blather.Blather from people who wouldn't make a damn decision, if their hair was on fire, and they were holding a fire extinguisher in their hands.
24. alex Fishman is working for Mullahs !
(08.18.08)
25. JOHNNY OF TORONTO...............#19
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (08.18.08)
Hardly does it matter what category you place Iran into..................whether it is develpoed or not is not the question..............although by reading your talk-back one can easily discern sort of anger, hatred and more of frustration.Alex Fishmen may be wrong in his analysis,I have hardly read anything from you except to read that this and that to be done to Iran.Anyone with sound mind can write that,Johnny.Very true indeed ............you stating that the Iranians are having technologies of 70's which USA and Israel had.Well then, why the statements of concern emanating from Washington and Tel Aviv almost every week?Is the 70's technology bothering you so much? What is something more latest is presented in the course of next few months by the Iranians? Enjoy your life in Toronto and stop indulging in subjects alien to you.
26. #1-I just read Iran said it wants to share its SpaceTek with
Alan ,   SA   (08.18.08)
"friendly Muslim States"
27. Doing Nothing Not An Option
Larry ,   zefat israel   (08.18.08)
Iranian nuclear project is in actual fact already History .So much for Defeatists like Alex Fishman and others. The time and Date will be revealed in due course ...the detais and all the rest is academic.
28. Bad analysis
Septimus ,   Rome   (08.18.08)
The argument from the author of taht article is pure appaesement. One can change iran, with Nazi Germany, and change dates, and that article could have been publishe din newspaper in the end 30's. Ther eare no substitute, whatever are the risks of confrontation, to a major strike against the mullah entity. the option of letting them go nuclear is no option, it is the gate open to another holocaust, to a III world war. Iran has to be stoppe dmilitrily. Their economy is not capable to sustain teh blow of the destruction of thos ebillions invested by their criminal leaders in all thjose costly projects. The infmlation rate is nearing 70%. Ther eare food and gas shortage. Their tyrants bet on prestige projects to maintain their grip on their land. If their fails to publicly, their will be reveale dfor what they are, a paper tiger. War is now the only option before it is too late, befor ethe whole middle east will become a radio active spot.
29. Choices
Brent ,   Lawrence, US   (08.18.08)
We are facing the same choices that the world faced in the 1930s. Back then it was obvious and apparent that Nazi Germany was rearming and intending aggression. As history shows neither France nor Britain acted decisively against Germany until it was too late. It is a known historical fact that had Britain or France mobilized when Hitler re-militarized the Rhine Valley that he would have been forced to pull his troops out because he was not ready for a fight. Such a poliltical embarrassment very likely would have postponed or maybe even prevented Hitler from doing what he did as he would have been shown to be the weakling he really was. Now we have Iran playing the role of Nazi Germany. The choice we face is one of acting now and enduring short term pain, or postponing and experiencing long term, much deeper pain. It was the same choice Britain and France faced in the 1930s. Have we learned anything from that which could be applied here? I hope so, but am not confident.
30. He means conventional attacks cannot do the job
avrom ,   bet shemesh   (08.18.08)
but the US has enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world six times over as Iran is not a major portion of the world it can be dealt with and the rest of the world will learn a valuable lesson that obtaining WMD if you are a crazy state will lead to obliteration
