1. New York is more Jewish than Israel.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (08.21.08)
Our supermarkets are a scandal. We had better supermarkets in the Third-World country I come from - and much better quality food, especially meats & poultry. And much more variety. I was shocked when I first saw Israeli supermarkets.
2. Terry, it's all relative...
A ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.21.08)
When my friend arrived in Israel from Russia in the 1990's, she went to a local makolet and started crying when she saw how many yogurts there were on sale.
3. No. 1 Terry
NYC Girl   (08.21.08)
Unfortunately, it sounds as if the quality of the meat in Israel hasn't improved much over the years. I remember the first time I tasted the hamburgers at somebody's house and wondered if we might have been given the dog's food by mistake.
4. Supermakets
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (08.21.08)
#!.Terry, I have lived here since the seventies. I remember when the supermarket was still something unique and exotic. In those days there were only three kinds of biscuits and bamba was the only junk food. Since then Israel has come along way. It cannot compete with the variety, and the opulence of the States but still our supermarkets are clean, they have a large variety and food and services. And as for the fresh fruit and veg. They might not be a pretty as the fruit and veg in the states but they are a lot tastier. If you are so unhappy here you should go home.
5. mmmmm, yummy can't wait
(08.21.08)
1 & 2 I hear u both
6. Wopody Allen?? You mean Stewart Konigsberg
Dr. Dave ,   NYC   (08.21.08)
7. #4 Terry is by far the best TBer here in YNET land
Al   (08.21.08)
So shut the funk up. As far as Israeli food is concerned I dont know I eat Canadian..esp Molsons and Moosehead. I also like moose and dear....Hunting season is coming soon and I've been practicing. My drop at 100M is less than 3 cm and thats while I'm swinging a Molson....Not bad eh?
8. Kosher food IS poor quality... Reason:
Don't care anymore ,   UK   (08.21.08)
It's a captive market with minimal competition. They can supply whatever crap they like at whatever price they like and daft Jews will buy it. Personally I find it all waste of time and money. I avoid bacon sarnies and prawn cocktails but otherwise I just make do with non-kosher stuff. It's not worth the expense and hassle.
9. #7 Who died and made you king?
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (08.21.08)
You can disagree with someone, but you have no right to shut them up. As for Terry, I'm sure she is quite capable of standing up for herself. I wouldn't brag about being a good shot in this forum. My daughter trains snipers in the army. She can shoot thru a coin at a more than a hundred meters.
10. #4 the fresh fruits and vegetables in the u.s. are bad
debra ,   usa   (08.22.08)
quality. we are always getting salmonella poisoning or e coli infections because the fruits and veggies sold here come from mexico, central america and south america where they are not grown safely and are often contaminated by fecal matter. you can only tell if they are grown in u.s., if they are labeled to that effect. and this is very rare. so, after too many bouts of food poisoning, i now only buy vegtables and fruits frozen or canned. i yearn for some fresh israeli fruit.
11. They Opened This Store To Serve The Influx of Israelis
Norman Shecter ,   NYC USA   (08.22.08)
It's not only Kosher, there are numerous shuls in the neighbohood and there's little chance a Qassam will land nearby or a Jew will lose his house to an Arab.
12. Try to find Nach Cheese in a can
mike silverman ,   OverlandPark ,Ks   (08.22.08)
I need to find a can of Nacho Cheese so the kids in a snack bar in Overlandpark ks can have nacho,s with cheese so if you can help me find some like this
13. Terry , we can see that you come from a third world country
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.22.08)
I'm coming from a west European country . Yes , there are products we can't have here . Fresh North Sea fish as an example . But we have a vast choice , enough to satisfy everyone . Not always cheap [ fresh meat ! ] If you can't enjoy our food , Terry , return to your third world country , it will not be a loss for us .
14. To the complainers
Rachel ,   Israel   (08.22.08)
I came here in the sixties and shopping then was difficult, but now I think that the supermarkets here are just fine. They are large and have plenty of variety and are clean. All of my visitors from the States tell me that the fruit, vegetables, bread and milk products here are much better than in the USA. So stop complaining!!!
15. # 11 Norman Shechter
(08.22.08)
According to the article, they opened this store to serve the needs of religious Jews, which would probably exclude the vast majority of Israelis in NYC. And as far as expecting to attract Israelis because there are several synagogues in the area, as they used to say in Brooklyn, "Forget about it.!!!" But perhaps your talkback was meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek.
16. No. 12 Mike
NYC Girl   (08.22.08)
While I'm afraid I don't have the answer to your question, you could try contacting the Pomegranate Supermarket and perhaps somebody there could tell you. They might have a website with a phone number or email address. If not, you could try calling Information. The area code for Brooklyn is 718.
17. I have always found it difficult shopping for meat
muriel ,   israel   (08.22.08)
but now that I am not supposed to eat it, it really doesn't matter !! Chicken and turkey meat is the way to go. The dairy products here in Israel are much better than those in NYC, though miss "Farmer" cheese and Muenster - the butter was much tastier. The Jewish bakeries in the Bronx (50 years ago) made wonderful tasty bread / water bagels onion rolls -danish pastries. Just reminiscing -not complaining.
18. Airlush is that airhead...
Al   (08.22.08)
Shooting a coin at 100M no great shake but try doing that while its -10c and you are frozen sitting in a tree stand aiming at a deer thru the woods. The deer isnt standing still for when you simply lift the rifle and he hears you he runs off. Shooting a deer in Canada takes skill. Hunting for Canadians is like breathing....A 100M shot with a 3 centimeter is a sure kill. Now go back to sleep. As to who made me god no one but thanks for the compliment.
19. anybody out there?
bernie ,   france   (08.22.08)
been in the retail/wholesale kosher meat business for over 20 years: tremendous know-how. a cheap 60 Gs per year+free accomodation in a smart neigbourhood+a brand new grey corvette+a green card takes me! A STEAL! shabat-shalom, brothers.
