1. What about Haredim harassing the country?
Deserving ,   Jerusalem   (08.27.08)
How is this any different then what haredim do on a daily basis around the country? How about the Chastity Squad? I am actually happy the seculars forced them to leave. It's about time. Stay in your ghettos!
2. We reached a new low :(
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem Israel   (08.27.08)
How sad, our days here are numbered. Almost time to wander again. I wonder how many years it will be this time?
3. That's what happens when...
Kippa Sruga ,   Jerusalem   (08.27.08)
YOU TREAT SECULAR JEWS LIKE CRAP. THE HAREDIM ARE THE BIGGEST PHONIES EVER - THEY CARE NOTHING FOR AM YISRAEL, BUT ONLY THEMSELVES, THEIR PARKS AND THEIR PICNICS. SERVE IN THE ARMY! PAY TAXES! WORK FOR A LIVING! YOU ARE A TERRIBLE EXAMPLE FOR THE JEWISH NATION - A TRIBE OF LAZY THIEVES, LIVING OFF OF THE WELFARE OF EVERYONE ELSE, WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY TREATING THEM LIKE CRAP. I'M GLAD THEY THREW YOU OUT OF THE PARK - IT'S ABOUT TIME JERUSALEMITES TOOK A STAND
4. To the offended family: Get a damn back bone!
(08.27.08)
To the offenders: Shame on you! We're all Jews, secular or haredim, We're all one!
5. Hatred
Rina   (08.27.08)
The hatred among us will be our undoing, not the terrorists. We can beat the terrorists but not if we are divided among ourselves. Both sides are at fault, haredim and secular. This incident is disgusting.
6. This is very unfortunate, but not one sided
David G   (08.27.08)
Before many talkbacks jump up and down saying how Seculars are doing so and so might I ask the following. What would you imagine would happen if a secular family went to a park in a Haradi area and were deemed not to be dressed modest enough? I can imagine far worse that could happen. The truth is this is absolutely unacceptable on both sides. If we Jews fight amongst ourselves then we deserve to get punished by our enemies.
7. If Jews can't live freely in Israel, what is the state about
Esther ,   Holland   (08.27.08)
8. That's the sad result of throwing acids..
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (08.27.08)
burning shops , separate buses and so on . But what the reasons are , such facts are intolerable and have to be condemned . I would also like to hear the other side
9. What's happening to this country?
Josie ,   Israel   (08.27.08)
Does it take another war for the people to be united???? Just a perception from an outsider who is inside.
10. For every secular place where Haredim are not welcome....
Ben ,   Rehovot   (08.27.08)
How many places are there in Israel where a secular Jew cannot go without fearing for his/her safety??? This is a disgusting incident, but let's face it - 99.9% of the time, it's secular Jews who are the ones who can't enter Haredi areas - NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
11. Haredim are entitled
Kipot srugim ,   Israel   (08.27.08)
to be treated with decency. This incident is a disgrace, and the attackers should be ashamed of themselves. They would NEVER treat an Arab family this way. A common fault, but "Kipa Sruga" is unfairly labelling this unfortunate family with the faults of the Haredi fringe and anti-Zionist extremists who attract all the headlines, because of their distinctive dress. Please remember everyone, not only Haredim are allowed to have large families if they choose!
12. Pretty obnoxious behavior.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (08.27.08)
I think the right word is ugly. I have plenty of criticism of Haredim but nothing excuses such vile prejudice & rude behavior. People who act out like this lack self-respect - which, essentially is what bad manners signifies. What a lack of class!!!!
13. Giving the Haredim a taste of their own medicine!
Ariella Bar-on ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.27.08)
This is a non-story. The Haredim are systematically taking over Jerusalem, abusing secular residents that have lived in neighbourhoods for years and forcing them to move out. The Haredim do not work or serve in the army, leech from the state, provide absolutely nothing for the country and then have the nerve to enforce their will on secular residents. We don't need these Jewish Taliban. If they want to live in the medieval period I suggest they convert to Islam.
14. antisemitism
working Haredi ,   jerusalem   (08.27.08)
As an Oleh to Israel, I must remark that anti-haredi slurs are strikingly similar to general antisemitism. "Jews (Haredis) don't pay taxes, control the government, etc". It's the exact same garbage. But in Europe or America the press or even people wouldn't dare say so openly. Israeli anti Haredism is worse than antisemitism is nowadays. Just look at the amount of anti-Haredi headlines. Just as it is a myth that jews in general are taking over the world or don't pay taxes, so it is for Haredim. And there is the occasional absolute lie, think "blood label". Well, I must get back to work now.
15. a Hoax
Nadav ,   Misgav   (08.27.08)
Looks to me like a overblown report by Ynet. Lie comes to lie, add a bit here and here... Come.......a bunch of secular "lynching" them only because they were kipas??
16. and thou shall love thy brother as .........
nossen tzvi ,   jerusalem   (08.27.08)
the way you treat your brother so shall g-d treat you. ; I complained to mycousin , who was an heroic survivor of WW2, about haredim . He said that his heart aches for those who were killed. Cousin received great honor in an orthodox shul on shabbat even though they knew that he came by car. It just so happened that he saved a few of them during the war. ///////////////////////my cousin is crying in his grave about the lack of love that Jews show toda ytfor each other.
17. Islam is laughing
Eytan ,   Rishon(visiting)   (08.27.08)
You people are sick and demented. We don't need outside enemies. I am not living here and i feel so disgusted. You from both sides are stupid ignorant people. You lost the identity of this land called Israel. When i see the kotel i am overwhelmed by is exsistence and the abiility to just touch it. As for the secluar like my family they don't even go down with me to place a note asking for that new plasma tv. When I go down and try to pray at the wall, You the hardiem push me aside and make it impossible for me to feel a part of my history and religion. You all are to blame here. Let me tell you little minded people the rest of the world laughs at this they say we have no balls to fight for what is ours and they wait and see us tear each other apart. they think it is only a matter of time and now I see what they are talking about. You all are so blind and stupid. I have been here a month and already have a business so what is the seculars problem. they cry about how hard life here is. I laugh and will exploit each and everyone of you small minded morons. If you can't beat them join them. Doors are open come on in dummies!
18. Damn it!! we are all jews!
ari ,   israel   (08.27.08)
2 wrongs NEVER make a right. what is wrong with us?!? all these talk backs about how haredi's deserve this blah blah blah. Revenge is a sin. what ever happened to love your neighbor as yourself? the modern state of Israel is a sick joke.
19. Sad times..
Simon ,   Malha   (08.27.08)
It is with great sadness to read this article, I think it is time we realise that - we are all Jews and part of one people, not simply one religion. We share a culture, a history.. we are one. The religious entity is the way to control us -- the separation of the 'Synagogue' from the 'state' is what is needed. All Jews from whatever background should be respected as Jews and have full rights under the state of Israel.. that includes the ability to have a marriage under the State of Israel, a Jewish pluralistic state... the right should be extended to Gay Jews. So what am I envisioning, a State sanctioned chuppah where a Government representative carries out a wedding, the couple sign a contract that sanctions a wedding under the eyes of the State of Israel.. where all Jews are respected when visiting the Kotel.. and don't have Charedi Jews questioning their religious background... And on top of that, a new law... that Jerusalem residents CAN ONLY BE JEWISH. Visitors to the city need to apply for a special visa. It is time, as a secular Jew.. that we realise Jerusalem has to have the same rules as MECCA.. Jerusalem is for JEWS ONLY.
20. Jews need to give each other space and understand
Leah   (08.27.08)
that we're all different, that goes for secular and religious and the strands in between. This is the baseless hatred we have heard many times was responsible for the destruction of the temple. The probably large family could as well have been secular and misbehaving too, except that they were dressed differently. I am not anywhere near orthodoxy in anything but i am required to be tolerant.
21. ridiculous sensationalism
eddie ,   london, UK   (08.27.08)
This kind of thing happens all the time, and has little to do with secular or not. The Israelis are notorious queue jumpers, and the extremists in the Haredi population are always trying to take advantage of everyone else. They even burn down cinemas or attack shops that they don't like.
22. Charles
DM ,   Amsterdam   (08.27.08)
The Dutch Charles knows exactly how to cope with these problems first you blame all Religious Jews for throwing acid and after you blamed them for everything they did you start asking some questions. It’s a sign of being completely prejudiced and arrogant. It’s a lack of interest in people and of being open minded. That which you blame the Haredim is you. Stop Finger pointing. Charles is like an Arab Blaming the Jews for all the violence and poverty in the world. "It's the Haredim It's them them them." If you wanna know about disunity and hatred call Charles. Grow up Stupid Jobless Dutchman.
23. Two Sides to Every Story
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (08.27.08)
This is sad and unfortunate but there are two sides to every story. Secular people are taking up the defense because of the extreme behavior of the Haredim. I live on a Kibbutz in the North. Just a couple weeks ago a group of Haredim set up a picnic in my garden. An angry man knocked on the door and told me to tie up my Labrador. I told him he was trespassing and it was the dogs yard. They settled down and threw stones at the dog till they discovered it was friendly. Then the kids wanted to use the toilet, which I refused. To show their contempt they left all their garbage on the ground. This is just one example of the rudeness I've seen. In queues on buses and in restaurants I've seen countless examples of such behavior. If you want to be treated with consideration you must be considerate to others.
24. Park
MC ,   UK   (08.27.08)
Would this have happened had the family been Arabs?! and not Charaidim?I doubt it. Time to stop discriminating aginst our own people. This is no more than a political move. If it's true at all.
25. Picnic at park not very pleasant
Verna M. Black ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.27.08)
The folks who attempted to barbecue and enjoy a day or evening at the park certainly are owed an apology by the nasty residents of the neighborhood who spoiled their outing. As a matter of fact they owe the family a kosher, mehadrin, dinner in one of Jerusalem's finest restaurants for being so uncouth to them.
26. All are wrong
Moshe ,   Jerusalem   (08.27.08)
The fact that there are fringe charedim burning down shops and beating up women etc is not representative of all cheredim! Just as not all chilonim are leftist peace now solidarity movement nuts... there are charedi and chiloni draft dodgers and tax evaders and welfare recipients and criminals. Plenty of ultra-orthodox serve in the army and pay arnona and bituach leumi and believe it or not income tax as well. The wealty charedim and even non-charedim give money to support the yeshivot and kollels and the gmachim and charitys. So not they are not perfect and not always right and have a long ways to go as far as achdus and ahavas chinum go but its not just the charedim. So stop blaming the charedim and in the month before rosh hashana and yom kippur do some soul searching and make a real effort to correct your wrongs and then you can blame the charedim for all the countries woes...
27. The Media is to blame
Shalom   (08.27.08)
With constant anti-Chareidi journalism, most of which is either exaggerated or fictitious, what do you expect? I don't believe that these "seculars" honestly believed that this was the "chastity squad" nor do I believe that there was anything "moronic" about this family. If they were a "Meah Shearim type" family, they would not have been in a Beit HaKerem park in the first place. This was a regular, religous family trying to enjoy a trip to a park.
28. #25 To Verma the Virtuous
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (08.27.08)
You are right. But then fair is fair. If the family gets a luxury meal in a restaurant, they they should refund all the women whose clothing was ruined by acid. They should also pay to repair the shops they vandalized.
29. I am not religious but.......
Jayyy ,   Israel   (08.27.08)
Its fairly obvious that if you treat them with respect for their traditions and beliefs, they respect yours. Both secular and religious have zealots, who dont want to reason, but i think in general, none is worse than the other. Its sad though, when the media blows all things out of proportion, siding one against the other..........in the end, we are all jewish brothers.
30. Haredim in the park
Eli ,   Israel   (08.27.08)
People were wrong to be unkind to Haredim, especially to the children. However, that unpleasant reaction is one of utter frustration as to what is happening in Jerusalem. It is becoming a city of restiricted lifestyles because of the unwarranted demands of the Haredim concerning personal dress codes, etc. Just as these people had no right to make these Haredim leave, so the Haredim have no right in any public space (including within 'their" neighborhoods, to insist on any dress code, which of course they do. They also enforce it with violence as they do the separation of males and females on buses. Shame on us as a nation and shame on us as a people for allowing basic human rights to be trampled upon in the name of some people's obscure and exaggeratedly fanatical interpretations of religion.
