31. Because?
RickD ,   USA   (09.06.08)
You say what should be done but not why. Will an eye for an eye bring Shalit home? What is required to retrieve Shalit is a plan. Monkey-see-Monkey-do is not a plan. Yes a plan that would result in Shalit's release would require a lot of pressure on Hamas. But a mindless idea of an eye for an eye will never work. Perhaps you haven't noticed that Hamas doesn't care if their people suffer. They don't care if their people die. The pressure needs to be applied directly to Hamas. Otherwise they will simply ignore your pressure, unless they are talking to the press in which case they will call Israel names and the press will eat it up.
32. # 13 in Illinois
Ern ,   USA   (09.06.08)
Where are the Illinois Indians today Terry Talking Bull, on whose lands you live, work and play ? A policy of native removal, subjugation, elimination from Thomas Jefferson in 1800 on. Where are the Iriquois , Hurons etc peoples ? You are the colonial rapacious imperialist occupier. The Jews have every right to defend themselves and their land of Israel, theirs for 1000s of years

"when was there ever a massacre when hundreds of Arabs were killed by Israelis?" Gaza, May 2008 (Saturday): 70+ civilians (including a news reporter) were killed by Israeli bombings and airstrikes. Sunday: Death toll for the weekend officially reaches 132 Palestinians, including over 90 civilians. If that's not a massacre, I don't know what is. Also, for those suggesting I study US history: the fact that you are insinuating that the Israeli actions are somewhat equivalent to our own atrocities speaks volumes on how corrupt Israeli society has become. What our forefathers did (well, mine hadn't immigrated yet but for the sake of the discussion I'll still give you that) 400-500 years ago was a horrible, bloody, heartless- and selfish- massacre. But the Israelis are committing similar acts in a modern society, where human development has made huge strides since the 16th century. Does that mean that the Israeli society is 'backward'? Probably not. But it does indicate how one major event (the Shoah) can instill terror and paranoia into millions of people and multiple generations- and cause them to inflict immeasurable suffering unto a helpless population solely in order for them to regain a sense of security (and, dare I say, power?).
34. title
Benjamin ,   Herrin Il   (09.06.08)
No we should not treat the people of Gaza like the way they treated Gilad Shalit. We should never lower ourselves to those of the terrorists otherwise we are no better then them and I know we are better. We value life while they throw it away. It might be hard but we need to take the high ground on this one and not give them any more reasons to be violent toward us.
35. There's a difference here
Elad Lending ,   Israel   (09.06.08)
What all the Uri- bashers are missing is that it's not as if some terrorists are holding our hostage somewhere hidden in a responsibly-governed state. No, here the terrorists are the democratically elected government of an irresponsible non-state.
36. Gilad shalit
David ,   israel   (09.06.08)
Excellent article pity you do not make the decisions here ex left- winger
37. Very fair points you have made, Uri!
me ,   israel   (09.06.08)
I second !
38. AMEN, AMEN, AMEN, BROTHER!!!!!!!
Petra ,   usa   (09.06.08)
And why shouldn't an eye for an eye also include 'kidnapping' one per day of the pals and use them on a chain gang? Let them scream.. who cares?
39. # 6 no, not to do something is crazy.
Petra ,   usa   (09.06.08)
Obviously you don't like the writer, the majority do and that's democracy, majority rules. Ever hear of 'opinions of the writer'? What a boob.
40. Welcome to gaza, it's a disaster..
Petra ,   usa   (09.06.08)
of its own making. until Israel makes them pay more than Israel pays, what's the point? The Gazans live to kill Jews, Jews must not only defend herself but, must make it clear that even harsher measures will be employed for the constant crime of the pals kidnapping Israeli soldiers so they may kill them w/o a response that will deter this, once and for all. Kidnap a 1,000 pals, make them work as slaves forever and smile. Betcha no more Israeli soldiers will be kidnapped. Or, Israel could castrate all the prisoners it releases, or inject them w/ the aids virus, the pals could choose.
41. # 33
Bill ,   US   (09.06.08)
First, do you have a source for your claims. I don't recall the IAF launching airstrikes that killed as many since since Lebanon in 2006. Secondly, in the definitions of a massacre I've found, a massacre is described as unnecessary killing. I don't think fighting wanted terrorists who indiscriminately (another word used to describe massacres that doesn't fit the actions of the IDF) murder people is unnecessary. You go on to say that modern societies have made huge strides in not committing massacres, I assume. What about Vietnam? Three million people killed whose country never harmed nor threatened the American public. Is that an improvement? I don't think the Holocaust has anything to do with the Israeli mindset either, other than the fact that the Arabs act and think like Nazis. Thankfully, they lose like them too.
42. Let them leave - and stop them from coming back!
Rose   (09.06.08)
43. to # 6 - the Pals are the one make the equasion
Assaf ,   Israel   (09.06.08)
It is not Israel that claims 1 Israeli is worth many Pals but they claim it on their own - why should Gilad be freed while Israel frees 1000 prisoners. Same goes to Hizb. I'm afraid it's true but it is not our making - 1 Israeli = 1000 Pals/Arabs.
44. What about 11,000 Palestinians Prisoners?
Serge   (09.06.08)
There is more than 11,000 Palestinains improsned in the Israeli jails, what about those guys? An eye for an eye, is not something you want Uri, because this would mean a lot of pain and suffering for the Israeli's.
45. #2 # 10 etc - 1 million eyes for 1 eye... Sure, why not?
Guido ,   Milano Italy   (09.06.08)
As terrible as it might sound, even 10 million eyes for one eye. No body obliges you to touch other people's eye. And why such a disproportion? Because you have elected these leaders, all of you rejoice and distribute sweetees and cheerfully blow horns and congratulate one another whenever on your name and on your behalf they massacre children on a school bus... So, your 1 million eyes are as if they were one. It's terrible, it scares me to say, but there is no other balance.
46. reprisals
Fair   (09.06.08)
What responsibility do ordinary Gazan students have for the capture and continued detention of Gilad Shalit by Hamas? There are some 8,000 Palestinians detained in Israeli jails, at lest 900 of them in "administrative" detention without charge and with no intention of bringing them trial (see: http://www.btselem.org/English/Administrative_Detention/Index.asp ). Is the writer dvocating that Israeli students be held responsible for this and other wrongdoings by some members of the IDF?
47. evry one has two eyes only
hindd ,   earth   (09.07.08)
some with only one eye . and some are blind .. but i think israili like this auther has many eyes so he is confused .. i think god create people with two eyes to get the most benifets of seeing but not thinking . but many eyes not to see nor to think ...
48. Israel must take action
Steve ,   Australia   (09.07.08)
Extreme situations, such as this one, require extreme measures. Therefore, I propose giving Hamas a deadline that Gilad Shalit is to be released alive and well by 12pm tomorrow, otherwise the following will happen: 1) All crossings to be immediately closed. 2) Israeli supplied electricity and water to be shut off, except to hospitals. If they do not release Gilad by 12pm the next day, the following should occur: 1) IDF and Mossad to begin targeted assassinations of Hamas leaders. 2) Air Force to commence bombing Hamas offices. If all else fails, send in troops, reoccupy Gaza, and go door to door until Gilad is found, and arrest any Hamas members. This could take a lot of time, and reserves would need to be called in, but if that is what it would take to free Gilad, so be it.

51. Turning the other cheek
Markus ,   Germany   (09.07.08)
It is a nice idea to turn the other cheek in front of your ennemies. The problem is that it doesn't really work. Instead, the ennemy will just try to hurt you even more. I really hope they have a customer service in heaven.
52. where was this whole shalit business when...
jerusalem   (09.07.08)
from 2001-may 2005 when i had enough difficulties passing the checkpoints on my way to high school? yeah sure, shalit...its shocking how some israelis (i would understand the enemies-palestinians-) use this guy as a bargaining chip. no, your principles are first hit and run then if-a) if they dont do anything, keep on hitting or b) if they do hit back, THEN its an eye for and eye. the whole article is BS. im not even going to bother easily refuting it; that task would be time consuming which i dont have much of. lol, people.

56. To # 30
Larry G. ,   Hamilton, Canada   (09.09.08)
Hey Said...cough..cough...I mean David, sure your are; you hypocrite--why don't you go back to Jordan where you belong! Islamic terrorists kidnapped Shalit, Israel has bent over backwards to release hundreds of terrorist prisoners and Hamas is still holding Shalit. What the hell are you talking about a certain type of "mentality" by the Israelis would bring more threats on Shalit's life! Shalit should have for one, never been kidnapped and for two, he should have already been released! How about the lying "mentality" of Hizbullah promising letters from the IDF soliders if Israel released more prisoners! Just one snag, these 2 IDF soliders where already brutally murdered (most likely on the first day of their capture); talking about a sort of "mentality"! And in the end, Israel gave up live terrorists, including a child murderer just to get back the remains of their own people; now that's the highest moral code of "mental" ethics you can have! So don't you dare come down on Jews and try to put us down for some sort of "mentality" you disagree with; I can write an exhaustive encyclopedia on the litany of the lying and backstabbing "mentality" of the Arabs and Muslims!
57. Logic
Fred Thompson ,   Mobile, US   (09.29.08)
So according to this logic, if the American government killed an Israeli, Israel would be justified in killing every American? You aren't following an eye for an eye. You are punishing many Palestinians for the abduction of one Israeli. If you ever want to live in peace, you will have to give up on vengeance.
58. ON GILAD SHALIT
JERRY BORIS ,   PHILA PA USA   (11.18.08)
great point, to give these elitist british snobs and their arab partners in crime, THE SAME TREATMENT GILAD SHALIT RECEIVES, (WE GUESS). where are the "peace" groups to see and interview Gilad Shalit. even the nazi prisoners during w. w. ii were allowed red cross visits. so why not the Jews? answer: because they are Jews, who never learned to fight back from its bolshevik govt, resembling the govt of the (disappeared) weimar republic. OLMERT, the crook, LIVNI, THE JACKASSS, AND PERES THE BRAIN-DEAD , (REMEMBER HIS 'new middle east"? Shimon the Jerk never noted, because he lives in FANTASY LAND, the NEW middle east is just like the OLD MIDDLE EAST. JERRY BORIS PHILA
