#14: Can't debate law in the USA; perhaps that's why it was so to easy for the southern states to have institutionalized racism well into 1960s. #17: I don't have to add anything. Uzzi Ornan alleges there would be an uproar among Jews if the authorities listed religion in documents. I'm replying that there is no such uproar in Germany. And you seem to imply that there was also none in Holland. QED You seem to argue that, in Germany or in Holland, it's OK, because there is a benefit from listing religion. This can be equally true for Israel. The fact that you don't recognize it doesn't mean it's non-existent. BTW, #20 is right: From having something listed to proving discrimination is a looooong waaay. In Germany, the IDs list eye color. Do you believe authorities discriminate people based on it?
32. Igor , is your faith inscribed on your ID ?
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.11.08)
No i think . Why did you brought this in discussion then ? it's not related to your ID . And no reason for an uproar , as people know , i suppose , the why of this listing .

I quote from the article: "[listing nationality] serves as a backdrop for discrimination. Flash your ID card and whatever government clerk sitting across from you immediately knows [...]" So, does listing eye color also serve as a backdrop for discrimination? Day of birth? Place of birth? Name? Just think of a hypothetical brown-eyed Abdullah Barghuti, born 01.01.1943 in Lod, now residing in Umm al-Fahm. Would you bet he cannot be discriminated against?

Israel was formed to be a state for ALL Jews. A democratic state, not a theocratic state, ergo no need for religious affiliation. It seems from your posts that all who are not orthodox are secular and have no right being called or even defined as Jews. Somehow, your idea of what Israel is or what she should be is twisted to fit the theocracy desired by the orthodox. Somehow, I believe most strongly that Ben Gurion and his associates never had that in mind.

David, were you born in Jerusalem? Do you know that for a fact? Yes, I'm well aware the US presidents have been BS'ing about finally moving the embassy to Jerusalem. Guess I'll have to question my granddaughter when she gets here next month if she is using her US passport of her Israeli one. She was born in Jerusalem to an American mother, ergo dual citizenship with rights to have two passports.

A name is a name , and your birth place can't be changed . When i lived abroad , in West Europe , my name was also not sounding as a "local" one . They also knew that i wass'nt one of theirs [ without any problem for me ] But you did'nt answer my question : is'nt there a difference between religion on you ID , and a listing for fenancial purposes .

Your granddaughter MUST use her Israeli passport to enter Israel.
38. whatever is written in my id
nadia ,   jerusalem   (09.13.08)
i still as iam . but this id is to facilitate my life to go and come and pray in alaqsa mosque .. here in israil the israili wants the id for benifits only . and they think the arab are the same / so they put difficulties infront of the israili id when it is belong to arabs . this is the point and this is racist
39. Benny , Monroe, your grandaughter
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.13.08)
If she was born here she will need to look if she does'nt need some paper regarding IDF . A cousin of me , with a famous Israeli name , born here but living in Europe , married to an European Jew [ of course ] was prevented from leaving the country by border police at BG airport . She needed a paper . With her family connections [ great Israeli politicians , generals and so , were guests at her parents home ] this paper was there in two days .

People with dual citizenship MUST use their Israeli passport to LEAVE and ENTER . As the Israeli passport is much cheaper than this of my European nationality , i have only the Israeli one ,and use my European ID card to enter Europe .
41. shame to be Jewish?
Yohanan   (09.14.08)
Prof. wants to hide he is a Jew!. The Jewish people had such wimps before - a disgusting sample of extreem leftist idealism - the worst enemy of humanity.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.14.08)
I'm a new Israeli , since 2001 . On my Israeli ID there is not written to wich country i belong , only my place of birth . This has nothing to do with a nationality . You can be an US citizen born in Egypt . Birth place is also written on your ID card in Europe . You can be a German citizen , born in Turkey . He gives very bad examples , and as i wrote already , my Nationality , Israeli , is written in my passport .
43. 29 - does it show the Jewish date?
redmike ,   Tel Aviv   (09.14.08)
wow this issue is not brain surgery guys .. If the date is shown using the Roman and Jewish calendars then you're Jewish and if just the Roman one then you're not Jewish. Mike
44. I am proud to be a Jew!
Petra ,   usa   (09.15.08)
Nothing better when you know how much Jews have given freely to the world. I cannot think of anything better than the ten commandments.

Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.15.08)
If you NEED the 10 commandements to behave correctly , then do it . I don't need them in order not to steal , murder and so on . You are right by saying that Jews [ non believing for most , if not all of them ] have given to Humanity . And of course , we can be proud of it .
46. Jewish country
Shaindy ,   E. Israel   (09.16.08)
The Jewish people are not part of a nationality comparible to any other nationality. History has proven that. We therefore have to belong to the Israel as Jewish or as a visitor in Israel with citizenship rights. Eretz Israel was promised to the Jewish people.
47. I remember in America
Leonard ,   LA California   (09.18.08)
When I filled out forms for jobs , miliatry and others I remember it would ask me my nationality (white American) religion (Christain) Today I don't know what they ask. But I think I'm Israelite but still white American. Not Jewish. If I lived in Israel I would be Israelie American not American.
48. jews- arabs- christians -druze.
f ,   israel   (09.23.08)
We're all awarethat Arabs can be Christian as well as Moslem. Once again the labels are wrong. What are the 'cherkesim' listed ?

50. Furthur Attempt to Make Jews in Goyim!
Tzvi ,   NY   (10.02.08)
Stop Making Jews into Goyim. Their are clear differences between a Jew with an Israeli passport and an Arab (who doesn't belong in Israel) with an Israeli passport. Fact is that a Jew is a Jew, so stop trying to change who you are. Better yett, why not make an attempt of following what you must follow (the Torah)?
51. Are you kidding?
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (10.08.08)
Israel was brought into being as a state for all Jews. Not just orthodox, not just secular, all Jews. Looking at the posts, one understands that to be a proper Jewish nation, she must be at least orthodox. According to David, Israel must be a Jewish state; predicated on Jewish kinship Hebrew language,Judaism and the trppings of Jewish culture. Let's look at this: as I said Israel was born as a state for all Jews, not a Jewish state; Jewish kinship; how does David de fine kinship? The Polish ghetto with dress of penguins, the Spanish who brought their own forms of Jewish practice; the Hebrew language?? David please explain why the UO do not speak Hebrew, rather in Yiddish, the language Israeli leadership defined as not to be used, not to be taught and to be forgotten as it represented all the ghettos of eastern europe. Judaism David?? Which Judaism?? The Judaism as the UO, O consider to be the only true Judaism. Or the Judaism of consrvatives, reform? Sorry David, you express only one side of the spectrum. Judaism is many faceted and will remain to the end of time as such.
52. Passports & Embassies
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (10.08.08)
David, my granddaughter's US passport has as her place of birth, JERUSALEM. No nation, just JERUSALEM. Yes David it really helps to know the facts. Every US president and presidential hopeful keep saying the US embassy will be moved as soon as feasible to Jerusalem. What defines feasable?
53. Not heredi
Ben ,   Monroe USA   (10.08.08)
Charlie, my granddaughter has already served in the IDF. Not only that, she gave a year's work for the good of Israel. Right now she is here in the states, after spending time in Mexico, Guatamala and India. She has no problem leaving Israel and even less re-entering Israel.
